James nodded. "I'll bring you some fruit then. I'm sorry I can't get you back home, but would you rather I not bother you at all? Just left you to the captain?"
Serephina winced at his implication. "I'll be fine..." she mumbled though even to her she knew her voice sounded afraid. She hated it too. Serephina was always the one to be in control to an extent and now she felt helpless.
James sighed deeply. "I'll be back with the fruit either later tonight or sometime tomorrow, alright?" He wanted to take care of her, but he still didn't understand why.
"Yeah. Thanks." she mumbled. She didn't like having James around because she felt that guilt that she didn't understand. She curled her body up in the corner to try and go invisible in the darkness.
James left her, getting yet another shirt and putting it on. He went to sleep again, and woke up a while later, before sunrise. He sneaked to get fruit for the Siren, and took them to her, trying not to be seen or caught.
Serephina was able to fall asleep against the wall in the shadows of the room, hoping the mean man wouldn't come for her in his sleep. The captain was out cold from a drunken stupor and would be until at least noon the next day. It didn't happen a lot but sometimes he seemed really stressed and just drank it away. It was still an hour before everyone would get up to do work when James went to see Serephina again.
James came and sat beside her, setting the plate of fruit down and sighing. He didn't want to wake her, for fear she'd get upset or worse. He instead left her to rest, just watching her as he sat.
Serephina was trembling against the wall when James came down. It was both from being a little cold and mostly from being scared. It didn't take long for James's staring to wake her. Her brilliant green eyes stared at James when they were opened and then glanced down at the fruit. Her lips stayed sealed.
James saw her wake and sighed once more. He pushed the plate to her and gave a grimace. "It's the best I can do right now. Some of it might actually be from your island."
Serephina saw pieces of bannana on the plate and hoped they were from her island. Those were her favourite fruit to eat. Reaching out the Siren snatched a couple pieces and stuffed them in her mouth. They were from the island. "Mmm.." she mumbled to herself while chewing.
James smiled a little. "I take it I picked the right thing?" He sighed. "This is the part where you thank me, you know."
(Sorry for short post, just having trouble coming up with any more at the moment.)
"Thanks." Serephina mumbled while eating the other pieces of fruit but sticking mostly to the bannana. "But.. Why are you doing this?" she asked James. She knew his name from others saying it but she still hadn't told anyone who she was. Serephina didn't really want to talk to anyone but she was curious about this human's strange behavior.
James shrugged, looking down. "I don't know. Soft heart I guess. Can't even let a siren get mistreated. You could have eaten half my face off and I'd still probably be here helping you. It'll be my downfall someday, I'm sure."
(Sorry for such late posts. A lot of things have been going on in my life.)
"There's that weird feeling again..." Serephina mumbled She didn't know a lot about worldly things though she did know some. The feeling of guilt wasn't one of them obviously. "Well.. I guess I'm grateful." she mumbled, finishing off the fruits that she enjoyed. The Siren then wrapped her arms back around her body as if she were cold of scared.
James sighed. "What feeling?" He asked, out of curiosity and a little concern. "You're not sick are you?" He reached out to feel her forehead, truly concerned, and it showed on his face.
Serephina flinched when James reached out to her. She wasn't used to being around people and with what had happened with the captain she wasn't very trusting of anyone touching her. "No I'm not sick..." she said, voice wavering with fear. "It's like... bad. For trying to eat you... I don't understand."
"Oh..." James pulled his hand away. "Guilt?" He guessed. "Don't you know what guilt is?" He then added. "As long as you don't try to eat me again, I'm not going to do anything to hurt you."
"I'm not going to try to eat you." Despite the guilt she felt and situation she was in she laughed softly. "I wouldn't do that. Your leader has my harp..." she mumbled, face falling once again. "Guilt... I've never heard of it." Serephina admitted.
"And what if you had your harp right now...?" James asked, a little sad that she was going to stick to her ways, it seemed. If she had her harp, he'd be a dead man.
Serephina looked at James for a long moment. "No James... That guilt thing you talked about... No. I don't think I would eat you." she admitted. Serephina was still skeptical but James seemed really nice and she wanted to believe that.
