"Yeah," replied Erin, "I don't think he needed to stab him in the hand like that." The van began to move. "So, you okay? I'm a bit freaked out."
"Same here. Glad I'm not the only one here who's not completely fine with all of this.." Simon shook his head a little. "When I answered your ad, this is definitely not what I expected."
"Not what I was expecting, either. I figured that if we even got a case on the first day, it'd be a lost cat case or something like that." replied Erin, "But hopefully this'll be over with soon."
Simon sighed. 'Yeah, hopefully that guy was telling the truth and all the gang stuff is over with. Rescuing a lost cat seems pretty good right about now."
"Yeah, at least we wouldn't be in insanely uncomfortable clothes." added Erin, sighing.
Simon let out a shocked laugh. "Really? The clothes? See, my biggest problem with this is the torturous interigation and the possibility of murdering someone."
"That too. I figured I might as well not mention it since we're both feeling that one already." replied Erin. The van began to slow, then stopped. "We're here!" announced Jack.
Simon said gravely, "guess it's go time. Hope the only thing left on our little adventure is a happy reuinion..." he stepped out of the car and tried to hold the gun menacingly.
Erin nodded. "Yeah, hopefully." she carefully stepped out, holding onto the gun. They went to the pre-mentioned storage unit and Jack went to work on the lock. Leo watched, biting his thumbnail worriedly.
Simon's gun started to feel like it weighed a ton. He whispered worriedly to Erin, "You...you don't think we'll have to actualy use these, do you? I don't think I could...you know..."
Erin leaned in and whispered back, "Well, I think they're for a 'just in case' situation. Like, just in case someone puts up a fight or just in case he can't crack the lock."
Simon replied, with a little panic in his voice, "but what if someone did put up a fight? My hands would probably be shaking so bad I'd hit one of our own..."
Erin bit her lip. "I can cover for you, I think. I practice daily at a range." Finally, Jack managed to pick the lock. Everyone stood back, back to the wall. Leo was on one side of the door, Jack on the other. They both grabbed a handle and pulled. There was no gunfire. No screams. No blasts. Inside was a mother and two children huddled together, their eyes wide with fear. They looked around before walking in. The room was vacant except for them. Something's up, thought Erin, looking around, No one keeping watch over the hostages? Leo ran towards them and kneeled to be eye level with them. One of the kids, a small boy, yelled, "It's Santa!" He still donned the plush white beard. Leo took it off and the kids squealed, "Daddy!" They hugged him, but then his wife spoke. "I can't move," she said, "Or we'll die."
Simon, whispering as quietly as he could, asked Erin, "what the he.ll's going on? I know I said I probably couldn't use this thing, but I'd feel a lot better if I could see something to use it on right now!"
Erin's eyes widened. "Don't you dare shoot that thing, Simon." she warned, staring at the object Leo's wife was sitting on. It was a black colored box with a blinking red light. "I think a goon is going to be the least of our worries right now." Leo looked at the box. "Wait, is that a-" His wife nodded. "If I get up, it'll activate and blow this place skyhigh."
Simon realized the danger they had all walked into. Leo's wife didn't seem about to stand up, but he wouldn't put it past Leo to move her. "Leo, don't you touch her!" He barked instinctively.
Leo swivled his head around at Simon. "I know!" he shot back. Erin kneeled down and looked at the box. "Hey Jack, you know anything about bombs?" He shook his head. "X does, but I don't." She looked over at him. "Please go get her."
Simon anxiously questioned Erin, "Hey, if they can't diffuse the bomb...what do we do? Any chance of us getting help from the police or something?'
"Hopefully, but I don't know." replied Erin in a whisper, biting her lip. She didn't care to alarm Leo and his family more than they were already.
"Think X will be able to get us out of this one?" Simon asked absentmindedly. "She always seems so sure of herself....hope she stays cool under pressure..."
