Reese smiled with excitement, he didn't think she would have wanted to meet them. Though even if she had told her they were gang members, he didn't think she'd know what they were. "Alright let's go!" he chirped excitedly. He grabbed her hand gently, and softly tugged her down a dark alley. They took a couple turns, and eventually reached a beat down shack. "Here's home!" he whispered.
Tik paused near the shack, eyeing it suspiciously. 'It won't fall down, will it?' She signed. One time, the scientists had gotten a whole bunch of new supplies in boxes, and after they had been unpacked, the boxes were all thrown into a corner before being taken out. This shack hardly looked more stable than that pile of cardboards boxes.
Jynx, one of the gang members, was waiting outside in the shadows. His dark skin and many tattoos all added together and somehow made him blend in with his surroundings. Until he stepped out, he was close to invisible.
He took a few steps toward them and Tik took one back. To most people he looked intimidating Six-three, two hundred and thirty pounds of muscle, gold hoop in his left ear, full sleeve of tattoos on his right arm. "What happened?" He demanded, voice deep and melodiously growlish. "Who's the girl?"
Anyone who didn't know him would be terrified, as Tik was. But Reese knew him, and Jynx was really a very nice person, and usually gentle.
Reese shook his head. "No worries Tik, it won't fall down." he signed in the only way he knew how. As he saw Jynx emerge from the shadows, Resse beamed, and clapped his old friend on the back. "Jynx! It's so good to be back. This is Tik by the way. I used the sewer as an escape route, and wandered into come creepy underground lab thing. That's where I found Tik. Some of the guys tried to inject needles into me and hold me hostage. Luckily, I was able to escape." he quickly filled Jynx in.
Jynx peered around the corner, paranoid. "Did anyone follow you? Are you sure you can trust her?"
"I'm sure no one followed us. It's just Tik and me, Jynx, no worries. How have things been holding up here?" Reese asked curiously. He knew that he himself had escaped, but he wasn't sure if anyone had gotten killed, or arrested.
"Everyone else got back hours -" Jynx cut off sharply as Tik stepped forward and ran a single finger down his sleeve of tattoos, then snatched her hand back as if burned. She stared at them in confusion when she realized that it only felt like skin. She had never seen skin that looked anything like that, and it perplexed her. Had he drawn on himself?
"What are you doing?" Jynx asked her, glancing quickly between Tik and Reese. "What's she doing?"
Tik walked in a circle around him, taking in all of the tattoos and the dark skin. She had thought Reese looked strange, but, to her, Jynx looked positively alien. Jynx watched her closely, then looked back to Reese. "Is your friend okay?"
Reese watched Tik, and the way she was fixated upon Jynx. He then realized that Tik had probably never seen anyone who didn't have perfect unblemished skin.
Chuckling, Reese turned to answer Jynx. "She's just... examining you. She came from a lab, she hasn't ever seen anything like you, like us, before. I don't think she's very knowledgeable to our world, meaning she probably is unfamiliar with our ways and customs. It may take some adjusting, but I think she'll adjust." He thought for moment, trying to recall if there was anything he'd forgotten to mention.
"Oh, one other small thing. She is fluent in sign language. There are only a few basic words she can understand in English." Reese added sheepishly.
"Oh!" Jynx's face lit up, instantly transforming him from something from a nightmare to a friendly young man that anyone would imagine as an older brother. He signed something to Tik, lightning fast and nearly impossible to follow.
Tik grinnned and laughed, an odd sound, as it was just air whooshing in and out from her lungs, then signed back just as rapidly.
Jynx turned back to Reese. "It's getting cold out. You should get inside; Simon will want a report and Tik's going to freeze out here in that dress." Simon was the leader of their gang, and he tended to be a bit persnickety about such things. His OCD wanted to know every detail of what happened in his gang to keep them all safe.
Reese watched in utter amazement as Jynx communicated so naturally with Tik. Their hands moved at top speed, and Tik seemed to be having the time of her life. "Whoa Jynx, I didn't know you could sign so well!" he exclaimed.
"Let's go inside, c'mon Tik." he murmured, opening the door and ushering them into the shack. He breathed in the familiar smelling of the oak wood walls and floor. "It's good to be home." he breathed, closing his eyes for a few moments. He soon opened them, and promptly shut the door as to not let in any more cold air. "Sorry Tik, it's nothing like you're used to. But it's home to me."
"My cousin is deaf." Jynx explained. He rarely ever spoke about his family, and most of the gang had no idea if he even had one.
Tik ran her soft fingers along the rough wall, then leaned in and inhaled the new scent deeply. The floor was much smoother under her bare feet, worn down from years of traffic and washings. It was dirty and strange, but she loved it.
Reese nodded thoughtfully. "I didn't even know you had a cousin..." he murmured softly. He watched how Tik admired their old shack. To him it was home, but he wasn't sure how someone used to a clean and polished lifestyle could love something that was practically the opposite. "So when did you say Simon was coming back?" he asked.
"He was supposed to meet with the leader of another gang an hour ago." Jynx replied. "He should be back any minute. You probably shouldn't let Tik past this room before he gets back." Simon, with all his paranoid security measures, wouldn't appreaciate them letting a stranger have free reign of the base.
((You can add any other gang members you want, btw.))
Reese nodded. "Yeah, you know how Simon is..." he muttered. Before he could warn Tik to stay here, another gang member, Mac, had entered. Mac wasn't the most pleasant of people, he usually came back drunk and delirious, but was one of their best fighters. Simon would be foolish to let him go.
"Hey guys, how'd ya get back ol' Reesie?" he slurred.
"Mac, go to bed, you're drunk." Reese ordered.
Mac ignored him, and walked until he was only a few inches away from Tik. "What. Are. You. Doing. HERE?" he screeched loudly in Tik's face.
Tik took two quick steps back amd bumped into the wall. Just a minute ago she had loved that wall; it was a sign that she was free. Now, it was trapping her with this terrifyingly loud man. She looked quickly to Reese and Jynx, hoping one of them would explain what was going on or make this new man leave her alone.
Jynx reached out and grabbed Mac's arm, firm but friendly, not wanting to provoke him. "Hey Mac, it's okay."
Reese walked over and stood in between Tik and Simon. "It's alright man, you're just drunk. Tik's safe, so don't worry. Just go to bed. I'll explain everything to you in the morning when you're sober. Now go." he ordered firmly. He didn't want Mac to hurt Tik. Tik was so new to this world, he didn't want her to have a bad experience on her first day.
Tik stayed firmly behind Reese. He knew Mac, obviously, so she didn't feel like he would hurt him. He just said that she was safe, and she believed him. Why would he lie?
Reese ushered Mac into one of the two bedrooms in the shack. "Sorry about that Tik." he muttered, then turned to Jynx and banged his fist on the table. "When's Simon coming back? He's been gone for ages!" Reese exclaimed angrily.
Suddenly the front door banged open and Simon burst in, gun in hand. Tik stumbled back into the hall in surprise, tripped, and fell on her backside.
Simon stopped when he saw Jynx, glaring. "Jynx! Why aren't you on guard? I thought the soldiers had gotten you all." He paused, face and voice suddenly perfectly calm and friendly.
"Hi Reese. Glad you made it back." He turned back on Jynx, angry again. "You never leave your post. Why the h.ell, now of all times, when the soldiers are hot on our trail, do you decide to slack off?" He gestured wildly with his gun as he spoke.
Reese beamed when Simon entered the shack. His face immediately hardened when Simon scolded Jynx. So far, he hadn't noticed Tik yet. "Mac's in the bedroom. He's drunk again." Reese muttered quietly, not wanting to interfere with Simon and Jynx.
"Wait. Did I hear you say soldiers? There are soldiers after us now? Oh great, what lovely timing." he remarked sarcastically.
Simon looked back at Reese. "Of course there are soldiers after us. You just stole three crates from one of their guarded facilities."
He sighed, seemingly forgetting about Jynx leaving his guard post for the moment, and Jynx silently slipped outside back to his shift. "Actually, that's what took me so long. The army overreacted to the theft. We've stolen from them before, and they get p.issed, but this time they brought in reinfocements. A helicopter flew in earlier. It has to be someone high-up, or they wouldn't have wasted the fuel. Good thing is, we got paid extra for this one because of all the extra trouble. I'm not sure it will be worth it though."
He cut off, frowning as he noticed Tik, who had picked herself back up. "Who is that?" He inquired, gesturing at her. The gun was still in his hand, but he wasn't pointing it at her like he was about to shoot; more like it was just there and he'd forgotten about it.
Tik smiled and waved uncertainly, hoping he wouldn't start acting weird again.
