Black Destiny: Fire (Ded.)

Jul. 15, 2013 at 10:40 pm

Alastair considered it, growling at her still as he did. His black scales were coated in blood. He knew it could kill him. But could this...thing...help him? In the end, he decided to take that chance. He stopped growling and bobbed his head in acceptance. -Try anything and you're dead.- He sent telepathically.

Her heart sped up faster. It was true. They weren't just animals. They were so much more.
Ailyn approached him cautiously, then, making a split-second decision, she sheathed her spear before kneeling by the dragon.
Pulling a rag out of her pocket, she wiped blood from the scales, squinting to see the wound. It was hard; the blood was dark, and the scales were dark. She exhaled through her nose and gently probed the area with her fingertips, hoping the dragon wouldn't bite her.
"What did this?" She asked without looking up. It had to be something big, to hurt a dragon, even a young one, this bad.

Alastair snapped at her when she caused him more pain, but didn't harm her. He growled at her a moment but slowly calmed. -A beast. I don't name them. I only name the ones that will speak with me.- He replied. -But this one...it was a youth, not yet taught the dangers of going against us.-

Ailyn jumped when the dragon snapped at her, then shot him a glare and got back to work. The gash was deep, and nearly a foot long.
"Did you kill him?" She asked, purely out of curiosity, not out of concern for the beast.

Alastair made a sound like a scoff. -Fight a beast that could do me this much damage? Hardly. Better to let it assume I'm strong than to let it test my strength.- He whimpered in pain once in a while, and gazed at her curiously. -Do you have a name...?-

"Ailyn." She glanced up at his face. "You?"

-Alastair. Of the fire-breathers.- He looked away, shame in his eyes. -But I'm not supposed to claim that anymore...- The pain was different now. It was emotional. He tried to push those memories out of his mind.

"Why not?" Ailyn asked as she sorted through her bag until she found a jar of pine sap.

-I'm an outcast.- Alastair left it at that, saying nothing more. He closed his eyes. -Sometimes I get called Star...-

"I like that." Ailyn said, spreading the thick sap over the wound. "A Dark Star. It's...mysterious."

Star sighed, relaxing when he realized she was almost done. -I don't think I've seen your kind before...-

"Humans?" Ailyn frowned, then laughed. "We haven't seen much of yours, either." She wiped the sap off of her fingers in the dirt.
"Done. The sap works as an antiseptic, and glue. The bleeding's pretty much stopped."

Star went rigid when the familiar word finally clicked in his head. He suddenly scrambled away from her, growling and baring his teeth. -Your kind kills us.-

Ailyn jumped back, resisting the urge to reach for her spear, though instinct was screaming at her to do exactly that. "I don't know what you're talking about. I've never even seen a dragon before, much less killed one."
Anger flared in her. "And I'm not some dam.n bee! We're individuals, not a hive."

Star didn't trust her. He'd heard so many times of the older dragons warning them to avoid humans. Humans killed them. always. -I've never heard a story of a dragon meeting a human and living without having killed the human.-

"I've heard plenty of stories about your kind as well." Ailyn retorted. "Of dragons burning villages, eating virgins and children...Do you think I believe them? Would I have helped you if I did?"

-Well dragons don't make up stories, and we certainly don't do any of that.- Star growled. -What I hear is true, what you hear is obviously not. And although that doesn't necessarily mean you are like all the others, the odds are greatly against you being different.-
