Jess watched as Janie ran off to the car. She scanned the area to see if her dad was around. He wasn't, but she hadn't really expected him to be out in the open. She was still shocked. Her dad, who she hadn't seen in YEARS had happened to be at the scene of the crime, trying to kill her. Shaking her head, she decided the best thing for her and Janie was to go home and get some rest. She said good-bye to her fellow comrades, and headed off to the car. She jumped in, and looked at Janie in the back seat. For some reason, Jess couldn't forget the fear and shock she had seen in Janie's eyes when the little girl had seen her dad. "Janie, are you alright sweetheart? Thank you for saving me."
Janie didn't respond she just remained in the back of the car. Her arms hugging her knees tightly and pressing her forhead against them. She was shaking and still breathing heavily from the smoke and fire.
Janie had heard MJ's voice though and it had helped to not hear her sound panicky, she knew MJ was invulnerable, she'd seen her nearly thrown from a window, but it still helpe dto know she wasn't alone in the car, somebody was there.
After no response, Jess sighed quietly and continued driving until they were home. Jess ushered Janie into the house, and closed and locked the door behind them. "Janie, I'm going to order us a pizza. Why don't you change into new PJs, and we can pick a movie to watch. That way, we can just relax for the rest of the night." Jess suggested, and began dialing the number of the pizza company.
"Hello Pepe's Pizza, how may I help you?"
"I'd like to order a large cheese pizza." Jess chirped.
"Alright, we'll have it delivered in twenty minutes m'am."
Jess hung up the phone, and walked into the living room. The window had been fixed from this morning. Jess switched on the TV, and scrolled through Netflix looking for a movie.
Janie nodded andwalked slowly up the stairs. She got out a set of pink and purple striped pajamas. Sh went into the bathroom and started a warm bath up, she wanted to wash before changing.
Janie was still scared, and had pretty much been shocked into silence at the sight of the man in the fire. Janie slid into the warm water, no bubbles this time and taking a deep breath allowed herself to sink under the water, closing her eyes as she let her head slide under. It was quiet underwater, calm.
The lack of bubbles in the water made Janie's scarred body easy to see, if you looked at her you'd think she'd been in a POW camp or something she was scarred.
Janie continue dto hold her breath under the water, not coming up, she didn't want to, she wnate dto stay underwater forever. Her lungs were burning and her chest hurt form lack of oxygen.
When Jess finished scrolling, she decided to check on Janie. She had heard her run a bath, and wanted to make sure she was okay. This girl had been through more than more most adults had. Jess went up the stairs, and knocked softly on the door of the bathroom. "Janie, are you alright sweetheart? Once you're done bathing, I've picked out a few movies for us to choose from." Jess chirped, putting her ear on the door to hear if Janie would respond.
Janie faintly heard MJ through the door and the water, she thought for a few moments before sitting up in the bath, she gasped for air for a few moments from holding her breath for so long. Then she quietly got out of the tub and starte it draining while she dried off carefully and slif her new pajamas on.
Janie then folded up her burnt pjs and tucking them under her arm opened the door and stepped out. She looked at MJ for a few moments, still looking sad and frightened and then going to her room she placed the burnt pajamas in a drawer in her night stand and came back out, she walked over to MJ and stood next to her, still to shocked to utter a word.
When Janie stepped out of the bathroom, Jess could blatantly see that she was still in shock. She hoped she was alright. She hadn't responded to anything Jess asked her since the fire at the hospital. If it continued, taking her to a doctor would be the only option. Downstairs, the doorbell rang. Jess looked to Janie, "Pizzas here! Come down whenever you're ready!" she called, and jogged down the stairs. She opened the door and a man grabbed her arm roughly, tugging her outside. He shoved her into his truck. Another man was in there, making sure she wouldn't escape. The man who grabbed her arm, went back inside the house. Jess prayed he wouldn't find Janie, she had been through enough already.
Janie listened, she heard what sounded like a commotion and then heavy foot steps in the house. Janie bit her lip and looked around for somewhere to hide, she couldn't think straight though, she turned and ran down to tehe nd of the hall, going into MJ's bedroom she desperately looked around for somewher eto hide, she was about to head to teh closet when a large hand clamped over her mouth and an arm went around her waist, lifting her up.
Janie was carried out to the truck and thrown in the back, she hadn't even fought, as soon as she'd been touch she'd gone limp, her eyes were dulled with shock, she didn't seem to register her surroundings as she lay in the back of the truck.
Jess was blindfolded, hands tied around her back. She felt Janie thrown into the truck beside her. The man who had kidnapped them began to drive. It seemed like hours and hours before they stopped. Jess was taken out of the car by the assistant. Despite her being blindfolded, she coulde tell it was dark outside. The air was cooler, and she could hear crickets chirping in the distance. She knew they were far away from the city, she couldn't hear the usual hustle and bustle. The man carried her up a set of creaky stairs into some building. The floorboards creaked beneath her and she was thrown into a room, the door slammed shut behind her. She was cold, dark, and alone.
Janie was led in unblindfolded. The floor boards of the house creaked. The house was old adn large, wood and stone is what it was made out of.
The man who'd been in the fire approached and looked at Janie, who's head was bowed, she stared at the ground, her baretoes curling under her feet on the cold floor,
"You left." the man growled, grabbing Janie's collar and lifting he rup,
"You ran away, you know not to leave with out daddy's permission." he told her. Janie didn't make a sound.
Jess managed to wiggle the blindfold off, so she at least had her eyesight. However, there wasn't all that much to see. The room she was thrown in was dark, and the ceiling appeared to have a leak that dripped onto the floorboards. The wallpaper was peeling off the walls, and there was a missing floorboard on the other side. Through the missing floorboard, she could hear a man talking. She'd recognize that voice anywhere, it was her father. What was he doing here? What did he want with her? She hugged her knees to her chest, and began rocking back and forth slowly.
Janie winced when 'daddy' suddenly yelled at her,
"YOU NEVER LEAVE!" he shouted at her shaking her, "EVER, THOSE WHO LEAVE WILL BE PUNISHED!" he roared at her. He threw Janie against a wall, she slammed into it with a loud thud and collapsed in a corner, curling up. 'Daddy' grabbed some rope and coming over he tied Janie's hands behind her back and her feet together.
Jess could hear all the commotion occuring downstairs. Her father was yelling at Janie rather harshly, her heart ached for the poor little girl. A few seconds later, she heard a loud thud against the wall. "JANIE!" she cried out, tears streaming down her face. Suddenly, the guard burst open the door and shouted, "Shut it! Daddy will be here in a few moments to speak with you!"
As the door slammed shut, a look of confusion was spread across her face. Daddy? Why would a grown man be calling her dad, daddy? She found this rather peculiar, but remembered Janie had said daddy burned her hair.
'Daddy' seemed to change his mind, he undid Janie's hand and retied them above her head, then he lifted her up and hooked the rope tying her hands over a peg on the wall, her feet hung about a foot or two above the ground. Then 'Daddy' went to a large fire place that had a raging fire in it and pulled out a long pole with a white hot brand at the end, he approached Janie.
Jess began hyperventilating, and rocking back and forth. Her breathing grew heavy, and cold sweat dripped down her back. "JANIE!" she shouted even louder, knowing it would do her no good. She looked across the room at the hole of the missing floorboard. With trouble, she was able to scooch herself across the room so she had view of the downstairs where Janie was. She saw her father carrying the poloe with the brand towards Janie. "Dad! No!" she screamed frantically.
'Daddy' turned and looked up, he signaled two gaurds to grab MJ and one gagged her so she couldn't speak.
'Daddy' came froward and undid the top of three buttons of Janie's top, he pulled the fabric aside, revealing her right shoulder and then suddenly pressed the brand against the soft skin. Janie stared at 'Daddy', her eyes were wide and her mouth open like she wanted to scream, but only a shrieky squeal came out. The smell of burning flesh filled the air.
The brand was a bird cage with a bird in it and flames around the base of the cage.
"Will you ever run again?" 'Daddy' asked Janie,
"No Daddy." Janie whispered her voice high, frightened and painfilled. 'Daddy lifted Janie off the hook and lowered her down so she was curled up in the corner. Janie curled into a tight ball, her hands were tied in front of her and her feet were still tied. Her mouth was open slightly and she appeared to be crying and shaking but there weren't tears because Janie was holding them back.
"Bring down, Jessica." 'Daddy' ordered. The guards took MJ roughly by the arms and satrted to half carry half drag her down the stairs.
Jess fought and twisted as she was gagged. It was so painful to watch Janie being mistreated. She had run away? Why? She was disturbed from her thoughts as the guards brought her roughly down the stairs. Before she knew it, she was in the presence of her father. The man who had tried to throw her out the window of a hospital a few hours ago. The guards threw her down roughly and she sat up so that she would be facing her father. She waited for what he would say to her, one of the guards ungagged her briefly so that she could speak to her father. If she spoke out of her turn, she knew her father would hurt her.
'Daddy' looked down at MJ, Janie was watching from the croner, she stayed curled up tightly. Her eyes were wide and fearfilled. She appeared to only semi-comprhend her surroundings, like she was going deepe rinto shock than she'd already been.
"Nice to see you again, Jesica." 'Daddy' said, she squatted down and stared into her eyes,
"You've grown since I last saw you." he commented like this was a normal conversation. He signaled a guard and the guard put a brand in the fir eto heat up.
Jess watched as the guard lit the brand. Despite the fact that she was terrified, she refused to let her dad see that. "What are you doing? Who do you think you are, burning down buildings?" she hissed. "And what do you want with Janie? She's innocent." Jess added through gritted teeth. There was a new light in her father's eyes, one she had seen so often as a child. They sparkled with hatred, and pleasure at the fact that he knew he was hurting her. "What. Do. You. Want. From. ME?" she cried out.
"Oh don't you remember, Jessica?" her father asked, "I told you the story, when I accidently burned my hous eodwn when I was 8, my mom died and my dad became meaner. Everyone said I did it on purpose, theys aid I was a bad kid, no kid at school liked me. See that reputation followed me where ever I went, Jessica, my work burned down when you were 5, don't your remember? Everyone blamed me. I deiced if people were going to blame me for fire, I wa sgoing to actually be too blame." he said. 'Daddy' smirked at her,
"And your little 'Janie' is far from innocent." he added making air quotes around the name Janie. 'Daddy' stood up, the gaurd brought the brand over, it was the FirE brand, the same as Janie had on her hip.
