Eris was taken into aroom that had a lot of people. Mostly homeless, drug addicts, poeple lost and hurting from shelters or asylums.
Eris kept her head down as she was led up. There were a few other people up there, a ring of people holding torches, three people holding knives, and he rfather holding a brand.
Both of the teenagers were girls, but they appeared to be related some how. One girl stared down at her plate and continued eating, refusing to make eye contact with Jess. The other eyed her curiously, and took a bite of her lunch. "What are you in for?" she asked gruffly.
Jess laughed nervously, and twiddled her thumbs. "It's a bit of a long story... My father turned me in actually."
Daddy started to list off what Eris had done, including running away and stuff. The people around teh little girl chanted. Eris closed her eyes as the circle closed in around her. She started to imagine the cabin she and MJ had been in, adn imagined other times she was with MJ.
Eris was scared. Her father was getting the crowd of drugged out people riled up. The drugs in her system were messing with her, but she forced heself to think of her happy place. It didn't seem to work very well though.
The older of the two girls, the one who had spoken to Jess, raised her eyebrows questioningly. "Your dad turned you in, eh? Nothing like a classic father daughter bond I see... What'd he turn you in for? Was it a fraud, have you had your hearing?" The questions quickly tumbled out of her mouth, and her cheeks turned a little red.
Jess took a small bite of her chili after it cooled off. She laughed nervously before answering. "I think he turned me in for kidnapping. Which, I didn't actually do but, you know. Like I said, it's a long story, lots of history. I haven't had my hearing yet though."
Eris felt her blouse unbuttoned adn pulled off her left side. She trie dto push what was going on around her away as she felt the burning hot metal of the brand shoved into the softskin on her shoulder blade.
"MJ!" she screamed. Eris blacked out after that, she was concious, but didn't really know what was going on. She was in a daze.
"If you don't mind me asking, what are your names? I'm Jessica, but Jess for short." Jess asked timidly, taking a small, disgusted bite of the chili.
The girls looked at each other, as if they weren't sure of whether or not to answer. Eventually, the older girl spoke up. "I'm Raz. My younger sister here is Erin."
Jess smiled, and didn't press any further questions. "You two are the only ones who have been friendly to me here. None of the other prisoners will give me the time of day." she murmured quietly, so that only the Raz and Erin could hear.
Erin snickered quietly, and Raz nudged her with her elbow.
"Oh, have you got a lot to learn." Raz teased gently.
Eris collapsed quickly adn blacked out. She was in a horrible daze and was hallucinating like crazy,
"MJ?" she asked, mumbing quietly.
Jess was about to ask what that meant when another bell rang, loudly and sharply. She winced slightly, and forced herself to eat a couple more bites of chili before throwing it away. "Well, I guess I'll see you guys around." she chirped, and proceeded to file out of the cafeteria with the rest of the prisoners. Instead of going back outside to work, she was pulled to the side out of line roughly by one of the guards. "Jessica. I was told to inform you your hearing will be bright and early tomorrow morning. There you will have a chance to explain yourself, we already have a report compiled of your father's evidence. Good luck." he explained with an added snicker, and showed Jess back to her cell.
Eris didn't coem out of her daze until she woke up in ther bathroom. her father was dumping cold water onher. She spluttered and her father grabbed her and threw in to her room. He stood ove rher,
"Listen up, Eris. I have kewn clothes for you. They will hide anything from last night. You will say what I tell you to say or else you will be hurt worse than you can imagine." he said. he threw a bag of clothe sta her and waite dfor her to get up adn get dressed,
"We're going to court, you've been out since last night." he added as explanation.
Jess was shoved into her cell, and the door was bolted and locked firmly behind her. She went over and flopped onto her cot, pulling the thin sheet around her body. Even though it wasn't quite night time yet, she felt exhausted. Moments after her head hit the thin pillow, she fell asleep. She woke up in the early morning, and the sheet was wrapped oddly around her body. Jess was sweaty and shaky, due to the nightmare she had had. Eris had been taken away from her, and Daddy had kill.ed her. She reminded herself it was just a dream, but didn't fall back asleep for another hour.
Eris was dressed in a simple denim skirt and a light blue blouse that was a western style with a flowery design. On her feet was a set of brown cowgirl boots. her was roughly combing and styling her hair to cover any mark on her head. She just stood their silently, staring at the ground,
"When you are put on stand you are going to tell them that Jesica kidnapped and abused you adn that I rescued you. THat's all, I'm making it simple so it can;t get through your dumb brain." Her father said harsly. He finished with her hair,
"Let's go." he siad roughly grabbing her arm and dragging her to the car he buckled her into the back seat, got into the front adn satrte dto drive to the court house.
Jess slept roughly, and was startled when she heard the jingle of keys at her door. She blinked the sleepiness out of her eyes, but it would be apparent to anyone who laid eyes on her that she hadn't slept well at all.
"Throw some water on your face. Your hearing is in an hour. Someone will bring you fruit and juice before it's time for you to go." ordered one of the guards, slamming the door behind him.
Jess went over to her sink and splashed cold water on her face to wake herself up. When the fruit was brought to her, she only took a couple bites before she was full. All that was left to do was wait.
They had arrived early. Eris was agigtated adn extremely anxious by the time they got there. She walked with her head hung behind her father. Eris sat down where her fathe rtold her too. He told her what her to say in the car,
"Remember you're story." he hisse din her ear as they waited for the lawyer and MJ and her lawyer to show up.
Jess was brought into a private room with no windows. They had locked her in, at least until everyone had arrived. Her lawyer came in not long after, and went over a few key points with her. Knowing her history with her father, it wasn't likely she'd be able to pull through. She could only hope they would lighten her sentence.
An officer walked into the room. "Jessica, you may proceed into the court room." he ordered, locking a pair of handcuffs on her wrists.
Eris sat quietly as the courtroom filled. She felt anxious and sick to her stomach. Eris didn't want to do this, she really didn't. She wanted to run and hide somewhere, anywhere but this court room.
Eris glanced up when MJ was brought in, but ducked her head again quickly adn stared at her little cowgirl boots her father had made her wear.
Jess was led into the courtroom and was placed in a folding chair behind a wooden table. Her hands were still cuffed behind her back, and they would remain that way throughout the entirety of the trial. When she glanced up for a moment she saw Eris, but she immediately averted her eyes. She presumed her father had fed Eris false lies about her, which would be used against her in the trial. Eris couldn't be blamed, her father would be at fault, as usual.
"You may now rise." the judge declared as he entered the courtroom.
((It's the bailiff who tells the courtroom to rise and after the judge sits the judge tells the room to sit I believe.))
Eris slid off her seat and stood up, her hands folded in front of her, her fingers nerously twitching. The case was announced and they were allowed to sit again,
"Opening arguement shall commence!"
MJ's lawyer was first to argue why she souldn't be convicted and jailed.
Jess sat beside her lawyer, nervously listening as he argued for her. This time she had hired a better lawyer, one who would hopefully enable her to win the case. Her lawyer argued for the time he was alotted, and then she was called to be questioned.
"Jessica, where is it that you took the child?"
"A small cabin in the woods."
"Why did you do this?"
"Because she was in danger, we were in danger. I had to protect her from our father."
"That doesn't seem like a very safe place to take a young child. Perhaps you should have alerted the authorities instead. They would've been able to help you if you two were being threatened."
Jess simply nodded, biting back sharp retorts. "Perhaps I should have your honor. I was only doing what I thought best."
"Very well, Jessica. That's all for now. Please be seated. You may be questioned further if more issues arise." the judge declared, now turning toward Daddy and his lawyer.
