"I'm fine..." Janie said pausing, "No doctor." she added, Janie didn't liek doctors, she didn't liek being touched and examined by them or by anyone for that matter. It was why MJ still hadn't gotten a DNA sample from her, it was the reason why a doctor hadn't checked her for signs of sustained injuries and signs of other things, or searched for any DNA of other people, the people who'd hurt her.
Janie rubbed her neck again, It felt cramped and the belt mark irratated her, like it was burning and itching at the same time.
She swung her legs as slightly as she unbuckled herself, she waited for MJ to come and open the door because she didn't know if there was a child safety lock on it so it couldn't be opened mid-drive. MJ had.
Jess stepped out of the car, still feeling rather guilty. She opened Janie's door so that she could get out of the car. She waited for the girl to get out, she locked up the car. "Ready to go in?" she spoke with a shaky smile. The people in the station weren't to keen on bringing in Janie to work. Shaking her head, she pushed open the door to the station. The Sheriff hurried her in. "C'mon Jess, we've been waiting. We found a new clue in the most recent arson case." he said glancing down at Janie. "Leave her in the waiting area, this is private stuff."
Janie stared up at the sheriff, she frowned. Why couldn't she go to? She wasn't a baby, she could handle it! No one seemed to be willing to let her in so Janie went and sat down in a chair. She stared around the room, looking at it's rather boring furnishings, at teh desk clerk who was looking at Janie like she was a juvinielle deliquent. She swung her legs and satred down at her hands, her burned hand was a slight red color and there were blisters on it.
Janie reached her good hand up and pressed it too her neck, scratching at the red mark she'd gotten from the seat belt.
Jess cast a longing glance back at Janie. Remember, this is your boss, you can't defy him, Jess reminded herself. She closed in the door behind her and watched the sheriff shuffle through files on his desk. At last, he had come across the correct one. This case was an arson, the most recent of many. Like all of the cases, it was very vague. They found very few clues, and when they did, they couldn't be pinpointed on just one person. "Whatcha got?" Jess chirped.
The sheriff looked at Jess through a narrowed glance. "Well, I had a few officers investigating the scene again and the found something rather suspicious written one of the half burned down walls."
"Well..... what is it??" Jess exclaimed, eager to see the clue. The sheriff handed her a picture, and she gasped. In the photograph, the focus was a brick wall, mostly burnt down in the fire. But on the very edge of the left corner, was a small word written in ashes. FirE Jess studied the picture further. "Would you mind if I went down to the scene myself? I'd like to look at it personally." Without waiting for an answer, Jess opened the door and motioned to Janie. "We're going on a little.... field trip." she murmured.
Janie looked up at MJ and jumped out of the chair and came over, she allowed her burnt hand to hang by her side but her other hand cotinued to scratch her neck incessently. She quinted up at MJ,
"Where?" she asked as they walk out of the building, Janie take two, almost three steps for every one step MJ took. Hers hoes were still untied, MJ had forgotten she'd promised to tie them obviously, Janie tripped and put her hands out to stop herself, scraping her burnt hand and her good hand, she pushed herself to ehr feet and wiped her hands roughly on her jeans, then she half tripped half ran to catch up to MJ.
"Where?" she asked again.
Jess was taking very long, fast paced strides. She noticed Janie trip and notice her untied laces. "Oh Janie, I'm so sorry!" she bent down and doubled knotted the girls laces. "Sorry, I really need to improve on this whole caring for a child thing.." she murmured, as she stood up from tying Janie's laces. She unlocked the car, and opened Janie's door for her. She hopped into the driver's seat and buckled her seatbelt.
Taking a deep breath, she began to explain the story to Janie. While turning the key into the ignition she began, "There have been a lot of recent arson cases lately, like the one I rescued you at." She began to drive as she continued the story, "We haven't found many clues that could lead us to one suspect. There was a clue found at one of the scenes. On one of the burnt down walls written in ashes, was the word firE. We don't know who wrote it, or what it means, but I want to take a look for myself."
(( Sorry, I know that the word fire has a special e, but I can't seem to make that e o my keyboard, so I just am using a capital E for now :) ))
((THat's fine, I have to go through a complicated presiegure to get it myself. :-D))
Janie listened, she buckled herself in and closed the door pf the car. When MJ explained the sign, FirE, Janie paled slightly and ducked her head to hide her face. She scratched her neck quickly and roughly, composing herslef before looking out the window.
Connected" she asked wondering if all the arsons were connected. She kept her eyes outside and her good hand gently scratched her neck over and over again.
Jess peered into one of her rear view mirrors so that she had a glimpse of Janie in the back seat. "I'm not sure if the arsons are connected, but if we are able to find this clue at more than one of the crime scenes, it is very likely that these crimes were commited by one prime suspect. That's actually a good idea, perhaps we'll drive over to more than one of the crime scenes to see if the marking is found anywhere else!" Jess exclaimed. She noticed the girl scratching the back of her neck. "Is your neck alright? Maybe I can take a look at it later. It looks like the seatbelt created a deeper wound than I thought." Jess murmured.
Janie nodded eagerly. She swung her legs and stared out the window as the drove a long. She was thiking hard, and continue dto scratched her neck, making thin lines in it, breaking the skin slightly.
Janie had been found wandering on the streets near the second arson place, which had been an orphanage. She'd beens cared adn at first had hidden in a cardboard box that was near a dumpster at first, she was found about 6 blocks form the crime scene. It'd taken MJ a while to coax her into teh car and get he rto come with her.
Janie remembered the police station, they'd try to take her finger prints, but her finger tips had been burned, she had no finger prints, they tried to take a DNA sample and she'd panicked and hit one of the officers while screaming. Then she'd been taken to the hospital, again freaking out and not allowing herself to be examined. She remember MJ taking her to her house after that, they'd stopped by the thrift store and picked up some clothes, including a set of soft PJ. MJ had taken her home and given her food and tucked her in, it'd been around one in teh morning before Janie finally got to sleep on the first day, she remembered MJ sitting by ehr bed util she fell too sleep.
Janie shook her head to clear it, theyw ere nearing one of the crime scenes.
Jess felt relieved to know that Janie's injury from the minor car accident hadn't been as severe as she previously thought. While daydreaming, she slammed on the brakes and brought the car to a stop near the first crime scene. She got of the car, and opened Janie's door for her. Motioning Janie to follow her, she entered the scene. In this case, an abandoned factory had been burned down. This was one of the less severe cases, thankfully no one had perished. All that was left of the building was a large pile of rubble and ash. She put on gloves, and ran a fingertip along the only wall that hadn't completely burned down. She peered at the tiny gray particles. At last, she noticed the marking of FirE along the very bottom corner of the wall.
"Janie, come look at this! This is the marking! " she exclaimed, as she took out her phone to take pictures to put in the crime's file. "What do you think it means?" she murmured, pondering the peculiar mark.
Janie followed MJ, wondering how conventional it was to bring children on crime scenes. She squatted down and looked at the marking, she tried to keep her face calm, not showing she recognized the symbol. She was scared to show she knew the sign. Janie remembered the whispered threats that she'd been told all those eyars. She had to keep what she knew a secret. Janie stood up,
"I don't know." she lied.
((SOrry I disappeared yesterday adn most of today...something came up.))
(( Don't worry about it! :) )) Jess sighed, and took a few more pictures. "This is by far the strangest thing I've ever seen..... Let's go to the next scene, I'd like to see if we could find this symbol at any of the other crimes." She walked sullenly back over to her car, and opened Janie's door. She turned the key into the ignition. "Would you be okay with going to the arson scene I found you at? If not we can skip that place." she mentioned softly, wondering how vivid the girl's memory was of that day.
Janie kept her face placid adn emotionalless,
"We can go there." she said to MJ. In truth, she wasn't so stoked about going there, but she didn't say anything. She climbed into the car and buckled herself up. She ran her nail along the top of her hand nervous scratching the skin over and over again, she started to scratch patterns into her hands and arms, staring at them with a weird obssesive look.
"Alright, thanks." Jess murmured. Peering into the rear view mirror, she noticed Janie scratching at her hands. "Are you okay? Why are you scratching yourself?" Jess asked with a concerned tone. She noticed marks appearing in the girl's skin. This made Jess nervous, she hoped that the girl wouldn't continue to hurt herself. "If you hurt yourself, I would need to take you to a doctor." Jess warned as the pulled into the second arson site.
Janie shook her head, she quickly moved her hands away and shoved the, in her pockets, making a mentak note to be more careful about what she did.
MJ wasn't like the other people she knew, MJ didn't seeme dto like pain for anyone.
The car stopped and MJ unbuckled and got out of the car and looked around, waiting for MJ.
Jess walked into the second crime site. Ash and dust packed down underneath each footstep. She examined each and every remain, but could not find the FirE symbol anywhere. "Do you see the FirE symbol anywhere Janie? I can't seem to find it anywhere!" Jess exclaimed with frustration. She got down on her hands and knees, and on a remaing brick was the word FirE inscribed into the bottom left corner. Jess snapped a picture. "I'm all set here Janie. I think it's time we should getting home. You and I both need a nice warm shower!"
Janie had not entered the second crime scene, she'd taken one step into teh crim escene and had stepped out again, nearly panicking. Then Janie had gone and stood by the car, arms crossed on her chest her eyes on her shoes, she wanted fire. Flames were nice adn calming. Sehe liked flames.
Janie nodded at MJ and climbing in the car rebuckled and got readto head home.
Jess climbed into the car, and slammed the door. Buckling her seatbelt, she turned the car into reverse and sped away. She tapped her fingers nervously on the steering wheel. She was unsure about all of these peculiar arson cases. Shaking her head, she attempted to clear her thoughts. She needed to be strong for Janie. At last they arrived back at home. "I'll go run you a bath Janie. I'll shower whenever you finish."
Taking the stairs two at a time, she drew Janie a nice warm bubble bath. "Baths ready!" she called out to Janie.
(Is it ok if she accidentally walks in on her and sees the FirE symbol? Not sure if its too soon or not, so I wanted to check with you ))
((Sure! :-D :-D))
Janie entered the bathroom and shooed MJ away. She shut the door and carefully took her clothes off adn folded them. Then she peered into the bubble bath, her hands gently tracing her scars as she put her toe in the water, checking the tempature. She frowned, it was kind of warm, she let her foot sinker deeper in the water, deciding it was a good tempeture she preapred to fully immerse herself in the bubbly sopay water.
Janie smiled as Janie shooed her out. It appeared as if the girl was finally becoming some what comfortable around her. With a sigh, Jess headed into her bedroom to watch TV until Janie was finished bathing. After watching a countless amount of annoying commercials and an episode of Grey's Anatomy, she decided to check on Janie to see if she was done in the bathroom. Placing her ear on the door to see if she could hear Janie splashing around, she couldn't make out any noise. Knocking as she went in, Jess stepped into the bathroom. The bubbles had lessened and was able to see some of Janie's skin. What stood out to her, as a very familiar scar on her hip. "Umm... Hi Janie.. Just uh... checking to make sure you're alright." she murmured, eyes transfixed on the scar.
