Damien blushed, looking down. "Oh..."
Zula shook her head, crawling out of his lap. "Sorry. Nevermind."
Damien grimaced. "Zula...don't worry about anything."
Zula gave him a look of disdain before pulling the blanket over herself. "Kind of hard not to worry, considering today's events..."
Damien sighed deeply. "You're safe now. I'll protect you."
Zula nodded, taking his hand in hers as she closed her eyes. "I trust you, don't worry."
"I'll watch over you..." Damien murmured, keeping his voice soft.
"Mm-hm..." Zula tried to stay awake, but it was becoming harder and harder to do so. "You will..."
Damien kissed her hair. "Sleep..."
"'Kay..." Zula sighed softly, her hold on his hand loosening as she drifted off.
Damien sighed, watching her and keeping an ear out for trouble. She was a beautiful girl. It made him feel even worse about coming so late to help. He wished he'd been there sooner. She wouldn't be so sad and scared then.
It wasn't long before Zula was dreaming, and her dreams were anything but pleasant. She squeezed his hand tighter, flinching a little with an almost pained expression.
It made his heart ache to see her in that state, but there was little he could do. She needed rest. But was it really going to do her any good if she was having nightmares.
Zula began to calm a bit, her grip on him lessening again, before she jerked awake with a gasp. Tears were falling onto the pillow, and she quickly tried to wipe them away.
Damien hugged her gently. "It's just dreams..." He mumbled. "Please don't cry Zula..."
Zula sniffled and cuddled into him, hiccupping softly. Even in her dreams Damien was much too late.
With a soft sigh, Damien pulled her into his lap once again. He reached behind her and applied pressure to make her wings come out. And then he gently started to stroke them. He knew this was a soothing technique. Andrew had told him it was one of the best ways to calm Zula.
It was all a little startling, to say the least, but Zula didn't protest. His fingers brushing along her wings made her sigh, resting her head on his chest, almost immediately relaxed. "Th-thank you..." she murmured very quietly.
Damien mentally thanked Andrew for teaching him so much about caring for this angel. He closed his eyes. "It'll all be okay eventually..."
Zula shivered just slightly; it always tickled a little when someone felt her wings. "Yeah... You'll make it okay..."
