Benedict shoved his hands in the pockets of his dark grey jacket, looking at the ground, and not paying attention to where he was going. He turned a corner and kept walking, glancing at the dark blue denim of his jeans. After quite a bit of walking, and munching on the fruit he'd picked up from his house, he ran into something... no... someone.
He looked up suddenly and narrowed his eyes. "There's another person here?" he reached out and poked the other person in the chest. "No... wait a second Ryker? Ryker I remember you! Oh, we took that one class together in school when I was a senior. You remember me? Benedict- er... Ben?"
When Ryker felt something in front of him he instantly jumped back. Someone else? His strangely indigo eyes widened when he saw who it was. Ben Holloway? Ryker shook his head and cleared his throat.
Ryker was a good five inches shorter than Ben so he had to look up. "Yeah." His voice came out as a squeak because he was so surprised and he cleared his throat again. "I mean yeah. Ben. I remember you." a small smile went to Ryker's full lips as he shook his hair from his eyes; it seemed to land perfectly no matter how it went. "What are you doing here?" he asked after another second. Of course Ryker remembered Ben. Everyone knew Ben when they were in high school. At least all the freshmen and sophomores did. He had been a sophomore when they had had English together. Ryker always took AP classes back then.
Ben smiled widely. He kind of hoped Ryker remembered him, so he wouldn't have to start all over with him. That would be a tad bit difficult.
Ben figured most people knew who he was when he was a senior. In fact, he was known for his snark and his wit, and also his laziness in classes. Somehow, he managed to pass with flying colors, and nobody really knew how... or why.
Ben looked up at the sky before looking back down. "Well, it's nice out today, for the first time in a while-" he took a bite out of the fruit he had before tossing it behind him. "So that's not bad..."
Ryker shook his head at Ben's response. "No no no. I mean what are you doing... Here?" he asked. "Like I mean... I thought I was the only one left." Ryker honestly didn't think anyone had stayed behind after everyone fled. "It is a nice day though." he mused distracted for a second as he looked around. The last few days had been quite dreary. It was gray and rainy. But now the sun was out and you could smell the grass and trees in the air. Ryker enjoyed days like this.
"Oh," Ben chuckled. "I've been here for about two weeks now," he ran a hand through his hair. "my family just up and left. I'm not sure if they expected me to follow them..." he shrugged. "I don't really care, it's fine here. Nice. lots of food. Free stuff. Don't have to raise up money for the store." he glanced up at the sky, his emerald green eyes reflecting uniquely in the sun.
"I've been here for just about as long I believe." Ryker thought for a second ticking off all the days mentally. "Yeah. About two weeks. My family left too. Guess we're both outcasts." Ryker looked at Ben tilting his head slightly. "You mean like... Steal?" Ryker hadn't thought of that for some reason. But then again he was always one for integrity.
In the next moment a loud gurggling sound came from Ryker making his cheeks flame. He was really hungry and now his body was telling him.
"Yeah, it's not really stealing though, if that makes you feel any better. It's just survival." Ben grabbed Ryker's wrist, "Come on, you're hungry, I can tell." he pulled Ryker along behind him. "We're going to get some food, and bring some back so you can stock up your home. What do you want to eat?" Ben looked back over his shoulder at the smaller male.
Ryker was surprised by the tingles he felt go through his arm when he felt Ben's touch. He knew he liked guys but Ben? 'Yeah right. Way out of your league.' Ryker thought to himself. Ben probably didn't even like the same gender anyway.
Ryker allowed himself to be pulled until he started walking beside Ben. "I guess you're right. Survival." the smaller male spoke slowly as they walked into town. "I like pizza. Oh and chicken fingers. I could really go for some bagels right now." Ryker started naming off different kinds of foods which was ironic considering his small stature.
Ben smirked, turning a corner and still walking. Ryker liked food, which wasn't surprising. Small people tend to eat a lot of food, and stay thin. "Alright then, you want like... grocery store food? They have all of that stuff, and more."
((So sorry for the late reply. I've been busy.))
Ryker stuffed his hands into his jeans pockets realizing how much he was talking. It was easy for him to talk so much because he'd never really been able to before. There weren't a lot of friends for him in school and his family had left him like it was nothing. Enough said. "It doesn't matter to be. I'm just kind of starving. All I had for dinner last night was leftover mac n cheese."
Ben looked back at Ryker, frowning slightly. "Well, we can't have that, you've got to eat!" he pulled Ryker closer to him, still holding his hand, but so they were more of walking next to eachother, instead of Ben dragging Ryker along behind him. "I've got a lot of food back at my place, kind of borrowed it from my neighbor's houses...."
"Kind of borrowed it from the neighbour's huh?" Ryker laughed quietly surprised that Ben was holding his hand. He hadn't held hands with anyone for a while but remembered you usually laced fingers so that's what he did with Ben's hand. "Well if it's closer we could just go to your place." Ryker suggested hoping he wasn't being rude by inviting himself ove to Ben's place. Another growl came from Ryker's stomach and he bit his bottom lip feeling slightly embarrassed.
Ben heard Ryker's stomach and led him towards his house instead of the store. "Yeah, that's fine, my place it is," he turned the corner and led Ryker down the road. "It's just up here, and there's plenty of food." He barely noticed when Ryker's fingers laced with his, but didn't mind.
"Okay. Thank you. I really appreciate it." Ryker smiled genuinely as they walked on. He held Ben's hand loosely not thinking much of it. Secretly he wondered if Ben remembered him from school. "So what have you been doing since you graduated? Before all this shi.t happened I mean." Ryker questioned to try and make conversation instead of asked what he was really thinking or just staying silent.
Ben shrugged, "Really not much, you know I'm not much for actually working. I was accepted to college... I was just taking a break and coming back to visit my family when everyone ran off... I was studying chemistry, and law, only because I'm good at pointing things out and making people look stupid using logic..." his voice trailed off as they reached his house. "What have you done lately? You know.. besides this." he opened the front door and gestured Ryker inside.
Ryker was already realizing how different he and Ben were. Getting Ryker to do science and think was like pulling out teeth. He was good at it but he didn't enjoy it. "Oh I've stayed in town. I was trying to get some of my art put into the local musem but then well.." Ryker trailed off referring to the infection. He walked into Ben's house looking around. "Nice place." he noted talking partly to himself.
Ben nodded, "Yeah... i know what you mean, and it's alright, not too nice," he led Ryker to the kitchen before releasing his hand, and going to the refrigerator. He gestured to the food, "Help yourself, to whatever you want."
Ryker brushed some of his hair from his eyes as he followed Ben. He instantly went for the string cheese he saw, grabbing a couple sticks. "Thanks." Ryker smiled opening one of the cheese sticks before grabbing a bag of bagels that were in the fridge as well. "So you live here alone?" Ryker asked going over the the toaster and putting the bagel halves in.
"yeah, it's nice and quiet, and nobody in my family bothers me anymore, so I just kind of wake up, walk around, do absolutely nothing, because there's nothing to do..." Ben shrugged and pointed to the wall, where there was a picture. "That's my family. I'm on the far right, everyone else is just kind of there, being my family and stuff... They called me Benedict, not Ben, kind of a mouthful when I got in trouble with 'Benedict Holloway'."
