The next morning Tally found that the school had been turned into a war zone. There was graffiti on the lockers, in the bathroom mirrors, and that wasn't it.....
Daniel gasped when he came into school. He blinked a few times, struggling to catch his breath. He looked around uneasily at the graffiti everywhere, absolutely everywhere. His breath was further stunned out of him when he saw the gigantic mural....
There was a gigantic mural of a fist, and the words Bully Smash in thick, ropy letters above. People had stopped to stare, dumbfounded, at all of the artwork. For once, the school was silent.
Daniel gawked at the mural for a moment. He started to look around for Tally, or any of the other Bully Smashers. But Tally in particular. He started to wheel off. Staff and teachers were murmuring, starting to look around suspiciously.
Tally spotted Daniel and ran over to him. "Can you believe this?" she said excitedly, a gleam in her eyes. "It's already happening."
"Yeah...It is..." Daniel said, glancing back at the mural. "But don't seem too excited by it...There are teachers around..."
There were indeed teachers around, starting to look for the culprit of this creative vandalism. Of course, knowing that would happen, Lanna had quietly taken the day off school.
"They'll never find who did it," Tally whispered. "Someone made sure to erase the surveillance tapes."
Daniel glanced over at the mural, then over to Tally again. Faintly, he started to smile.
The bell rang. The teachers grumbled but went to their classrooms and Tally left Daniel after a parting wave.
Daniel beamed and waved back, his heart beating hard in his chest. He wheeled off to class, after one last glance at the mural.
In class, everyone was buzzing about the vandalism. You could feel the excitement in the air. The announcements started to come on, and......
Daniel couldn't help but suck in a sharp breath when he heard Beck's voice during morning announcements. What was the boy doing....?
Beck got on, did his normal funny-guy routine, then said directly to the camera, "Today we have a special announcement for you. A new section we like to call 'The Bully Cam'."
A feed came on. It was a small girl, surrounded by several popular girls.
Daniel gaped. Was this really happening? The mural and graffiti had been one thing. This...this....Everything was starting to come together now...
The girls pulled the girl's backpack so that she fell against the lockers. One of them pulled out a lipstick and started to smear lipstick all over the girl's face, where she lay on the floor. "Don't you look pretty?" they laughed cruelly.
The entire school sat, watching breathlessly. Somewhere the culprits sweated in their seats.
Daniel kept watching, jaw going slack as he stared, transfixed. A part of him still couldn't believe this was actually happening. Things were actually happening.
As he kept watching, his breath caught in his throat.
The video ended upruptly. Beck came back on and said a quick ending-joke, then the screen went blank.
Daniel kept staring a moment longer, before quickly turning to write furiously in his notebook. He couldn't hold back his faint little smile. He wasn't smiling at the sight of the girl being bullied, he smiled because now they were going to do something about it.
Tally's classroom erupted into enraged conversation. People were horrified, but not sure what to make of the video. Her teacher clapped her hands to get their attention, finally resorting to yelling.
The same thing was happening in most of the other classrooms. Students clamoring with confusion and swirling emotions while teachers tried to rein it in, bring everyone to attention. Daniel stayed silent as always, still scribbling in his notebook instead of paying attention to what was going on. His heart beat faster in his chest.
