Note: I do not do mature romance. My apologies if that's what you're looking for.
He was wheelchair bound. She was dying. The perfect match.
They had been best friends from the time they were babies. She was his defender, his protector, the one who fought back the bullies who picked on him because of his wheelchair. He was her only friend, her security blanket, the one she ran to for comfort. Neither of them were expected to live past the age of eight. That was okay with them, they had each other.
She was the first one to die, right on their eighth birthday. It was a tearful goodbye, and he expected to die soon after.
Only, he didn't die. He got better.
Skip forward a few years. High school. He's still in a wheelchair, left to defend himself from bullies and attackers. His memory of her has faded a little, but he still misses her deeply.
One day, while he's facing the usual taunts, a mysterious girl comes to his rescue. At first, he can't believe it. It can't be real, no. No.
She doesn't look the way she did, and she doesn't recognize him, but he knows it's her.
I shall be playing the boy. :)

((This is when the bullies are teasing him))
Daniel kept his head down as he wheeled himself down the hall. Occasionally, he was bumped or jostled, but most people steered clear. He lowered his head even more as he heard snickers and whispers. He flinched a little as the bell rang and the hall cleared out. He still had to put his books in his locker, and he wheeled a little faster, trying to put the books away and get to class before he could be left alone in the deserted hallway.
But it was too late.
"Hey there, it's our favorite invalid." Daniel gasped as he felt his chair yanked back. His books fell from his lap, and he could practically feel Jake's breath down his back.
"J-Jake, please, I have class..." Daniel stammered as he was being pulled back farther, clutching the armrest helplessly. Jake just laughed louder and tipped Daniel up out of his chair, sending him sprawling across the grubby tile floor, his limp legs tangling under him.
Tally sighed. She was late again. Typical. She shoved her locker closed and headed towards second period. She turned the corner and stopped. The sight before her registered, and she was appalled. Jake was bullying that Daniel kid again. Everybody knew it happened. Nobody did anything. This was the first time she'd witnessed it firsthand, and she'd never talked to Daniel before.
She marched up to Jake, who was obliviously standing over Daniel's strewn body. She took Jake's arm, slammed him into the nearest locker, and grabbed his crotch tightly. Jake winced. "Get your sorry excuse of humanity out of this hallway," she hissed, making sure he knew exactly what she was talking about. Tears had sprung to Jake's eyes. Those self-defense lessons were useful after all, she thought. She let Jake go and he opened his mouth to say something, no doubt in defense of his pride. "Just go," Tally said menacingly. "I don't want to see your ugly face in the next three seconds." She raised an eyebrow. "One. Two. Three." Jake was at the end of the hall, and soon gone.
Tally unclenched her fists and smiled down at Daniel. She held out a hand and helped him into his chair. "I'm Tally," she said. "Are you okay?"
Daniel didn't look up for a second. He just stared at his hands on his lap for a moment, his pale cheeks reddening a little as he used his hands to adjust his legs to fit back into the footrests.
"I-I'm okay..." He mumbled with embarrassment. "Thanks..." He turned his head to look up at her, and let out a gasp.
Tally felt a pang in her chest. It was almost as if she knew him... but where? She brushed the feeling aside and said, "I can walk you to your next class if you want?" It was almost like a question. "I mean... if you don't mind, I'd like to walk with you." She blushed. Maybe he was afraid of her... some guys were.
Daniel stared for another moment, his jaw going slack. It was...It was her! She didn't look anything like her, with her long, pale blonde hair and how tall she was. But there was something in his eyes. It was her.
He felt his heart wrench in his chest as he thought about it.
It couldn't be her. She had died in his arms nine years ago.
He ducked his head down to his lap again, his breath catching in his throat.
"Um...Sure..." He said in a slightly strangled whisper.
Tally didn't smile. She felt that smiles were overused, and meant next to nothing. But she put a hand on his and said, "Mind if I roll you? It'll make me feel better about going all ninja in front of you."
"I-I can do it myself..." Daniel flushed a little more. He hated being helpless, even though he was in a way. He gripped at the handles on his wheels protectively. He didn't want to hand over his last shred of ability over to this stranger.
