Onyx sighed. "It's kinda complicated." He bit his lip nervously.
"I think I can handle it," Kai says lightly, smiling faintly and sitting on the desk.
Onyx's heart skipped a beat. Hold your self together, dam.mit. You can do this! He took a deep breath and spoke carefully, testing his word as a coutious swimmer tests murky waters. "i.... I like you Kai, but...."
"I like you, too, but isn't that forbidden...?" Kai asks, biting her lip.
He sighed. "I'm not quite sure if they even care, btu I don't wanna do anything taboo.... but.... I mean. i can't ignore this anymore." Onyx let out a shaky sigh, small tears welling up in his eyes. "And I don't know what to do..."
Kai bites her lip, tenderly brushing her fingertips against his cheek. "Sh... We'll figure this out, okay? I know we'll figure this out, one way or the other..."
Onyx leaned slightly into her touch, fighting back the tears. "H-how?"
"I don't know yet," Kai sighs, closing her eyes. "We can't give up, though."
Onyx took a deep breath, wiping away the tears and straightening up. He pulled the ponytail holder out and let his hair drop, and he began to set himself straight. "I can do this..."
"We can do this," Kai says softly, tentatively running her fingers through his hair.
Onyx looked up at her smiled. "Thank you. I wasn't sure what you would say.... I'm glad you didn't flip." He sighed and picked up a bottle of water, cracked it open and drank.
"It takes a lot more than that to bother me," Kai murmurs, smiling softly.
Onyx smile and gave a soft chuckle. "Good. So.... are you gonna be ok? You said something earlier about... Your brother?"
"Yeah. My twin brother..." Kai frowns, falling silent and twisting the bracelet she wore around her wrist nervously. "They said he probably won't make it..."
Onyx stood and put hs arms around Kai, meaning to be comforting. "If you have hope, maybe he'll pull through."
Kai smiles weakly, nodding. "He will pull through. He's already gotten out of some pretty bad situations alive. This can't be any different," she says quietly, slowly letting herself relax in his arms.
"Just keep your hopes high... M'kay?" Onyx's soft side was emerging, all nervousness fading. "And I'm here for you, Kai. I hope you understand that."
"Yeah. Thanks," Kai murmurs, sighing softly. For once she actually felt like she belonged somewhere, that there actually was someone outside her family who cared about her.
After a few moments, Onyx realesed Kai and gave her a smile. "And I'm nothing but an open book."
Kai laughs softly, standing on her toes to kiss his cheek. "Perhaps you are, but you're my open book."
