Kati nodded and held him tight.
Stephen let go and went to talk with Dominic, his face slowly darkening. When Stephen returned, he looked enraged, as if he were going to put a hole into a wall.
Lily had halfway drifted off, snoring lightly. Kait looked up. "Stephen?"
Stephen tried to soften his features before he turned to Kait. "Yes?"
Kait tipped her head to the side. "Are you okay?"
No point in lying to a mind-reader. "Not really."
Kati touched his face. "What happened?"
Stephen almost flinched, but he kept himself still. "Some people aren't happy I'm here."
Kati looked away. "It's our fault..."
Stephen shook his head. "No, it's their fault. They don't want to accept someone who committed arsony."
Kati sniffles. "B-but...but..."
Stephen hugged Kait. "I can still stay, but..."
Kait blinked her big eyes at him. "What?"
"People aren't gonna like me much." The anger Stephen felt flashed through his eyes for a brief moment. He was a part of this clan; people needed to accept that!
Kait looked down at Lily. "We don't hate you..."
"I know" Stephen went back to smiling at little Kait and her sister.
Lily stirred and whimpered.
Stephen put a hand on Lily's shoulder. He didn't want to wake her, but she was restless.
Lily shocked awake. "What?"
Stephen sighed. "You were restless, and I was just trying to calm you down. Go back to sleep, Lily."
