The Bloodied Dagger (1x1)

"Yeah, I believe you. When I came back, my sole purpose coming back from the city was to help people." He sighed.

Cecelia looked at him curiously. "Why would you do that?" she asked. Although she wasn't aware what most soldiers did as soon as they returned to Rome because there was no way she was allowed near the back alleys and murky inns where they had their dealings, she knew that helping people must not be a common aim.

"As second in command, I helped-" he paused. "As a soldier, I destroyed homes, families and I even killed." He scooted away from her and hung his head in shame. "I always returned to the place and gave them money. Now I know it doesn't account much for what I did, but it was all I had. When I injured my leg and got sent to the city, I promised to help those I afflicted pain on. Though I'm still valuable to the military, I feel the need to atone for my wrongs."

"Isn't that the point of the army? To glorify Rome and the Emperor by killing all its enemies?" Cecelia asked. She had grown up in a home where violence against the 'barbarians' of other nations was seen as a good thing.

"Yeah, to protect Rome against its enemies, but the military killed its own people. We killed Romans, we killed anything and everything in our path. At some point, the Emperor had us go and kill his childhood enemies. That...was a sad day for the military, few of us came back disgusted with ourselves, the military, but mostly, the Emperor himself."

"Oh," Cecelia mumbled. That didn't sound like the Emperor she had been told about, or the army her brother had served in. "But Emperor Vespasian only became emperor last year. And he's a good man, or so my father says. There must have been a miscommunication somewhere. He can't possibly want to harm his own subjects, can he?"

"The Emperor," he paused. "Has problems. He's not all there. Some days he is and some he isn't. That day, he wasn't, but who are we to argue with the Emperor's decision?" He only could tell the truth. He still supports the Emperor but he's not proud of his past behavior.

Cecelia looked around the dark garden warily. People could easily be killed for saying one bad word about the Emperor, and this man hadn't been completely favourable. Even if he had told the truth, many people were still around who liked to twist anyone's words to get them into trouble. "Would you mind telling me what your name is?" she asked.

Aquilo knew better than anyone not to give his name, but there was something about her that screamed, "TRUST". He went to open his mouth to tell her when a voice stopped him. "Ah, there you are. Come, the Emperor is waiting," the voice said and waited for him to stand. Aquilo stood and gave the girl an apologetic smile. It suits, he never got her name, so until then, she wont get his. He followed the person out of the garden and with one last look at the girl, he said, "Aquilo."

Cecelia waited a few minutes before following him back into the palace. It was more because she was curious about Aquilo than because she wanted to attend the banquet. Silently, she took her place on the couch. The men were discussing politics so they didn't notice her return. She looked up, hopin to catch Aquilo's eye.

Aquilo was listening to the men talk about politics. He wasn't big on politics and didn't listen until they mentioned the military. He was smart, but certain things he just didn't care about. He saw out the corner of his eye, the girl was looking at him. He furrowed his brow. "Is something the matter Aquilo?" The Emperor asked him. "No Emperor." Aquilo said. "You don't agree that the military is doing well?" The Emperor asked. "The military is good, that's not the case. I feel as though the General and second in command are not at their best. The General should be vicious and right now, the second in command is more vicious than the General." He stated.

Cecelia resisted the urge to roll her eyes at the boring conversations going on. She saw Aquilo look at her just once, but then he frowned and so she looked away. Absently, she fiddled with the tassels on her shawl, not really listening in to what was being said.

"Interesting Aquilo," the Emperor said. "The military is always welcoming to your wisdom. You could teach them a thing or two. You won't be able to fight." The Emperor paused. "I wont be able to fight, so I see no use in me teaching them." Aquilo said quietly. "I'd be honored if you wanted me to though."

Cecelia stifled a yawn. It was getting late and she hadn't been able to sleep the night before because of nightmares about her brother's mangled body. Realising no one was watching her, Cecelia closed her eyes for a moment. Soon tiredness overtook her and she drifted off to sleep.

It wasn't long after Aquilo's statement that the dinner was over. Aquilo stood and nodded to the Emperor. "I think, it's best I get going. I have to get ready to go back to the city in a week and there's a lot I have to get done here. Thank you for the dinner and I will be sure to think about your offer of teaching the military to become more brutal like my father." The Emperor smiled and let Aquilo go. Aquilo glanced at the girl and noticed that she dosed off. He smiled and walked home.

Cecelia woke the next morning, still in her clothes from the previous night. Upon finding her asleep, her father had carried her home and tucked her up in bed like a little girl. She found herself wondering about Aquilo, the strange ex-soldier, and hoping she'd see him again.

Aquilo sat in his room, at his table going through the list of names of people he hurt. He remembered all their names and so far he's helped or apologized to at least a quarter of them. That girl, he never got her name and yet he feels the need to help her. The Roman Government attacked her family and killed her brother. She's not alone there, his friend was killed the same way and many others too. He wants to stop them but he knows, the Roman don't take kindly to threats within or outside their empire. The offer to train the soldiers to more brutal, he has to think about. He notices the sunlight breaking through but decides to stay in and catch up on some needed sleep.
