Name: Garrett Ulysses Smith

Gender: Male

Age: 16

Appearance: Garrett is, in his own mind, short. He's 5'9" and terribly skinny. His blond hair is perched haphazardly on top of his head. His hair sweeps over his forehead, occasionally hiding his light blue eys. He's very pale and not very strong. Unlike his mentor William, he dresses extremely casually.

Personality: He's very quiet and secluded, though highly intelligent. He has a knack of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Unfortunately, he lived a rather sheltered life, so he doesn't know much outside of his schooling. He's never really liked being in proximity with other people, but he does have their interests at heart.

Bio: He grew up in a small town in Arkansas, spending time being nurtured by his loving family and simultaneously yelled at by his uncle (William). He's at the top of his class, and his family's paid for him to go to the best school, for his p[iano lessons, etc. He's had the most spoiled life that you can think of. Of course, he's about to have to man up and help stop a nuclear disaster...

((Okay, sorry it took a while. My internet is slow, just a warning))

"FOr the love of God, Garrett!"

William's face was red. Once again, he was yelling at Gar.rett Once again, his nephew wasn't acting like a teenage boy should. Come on, Oliver Twist? He should be outside, building up that scrawny .frame of his. "COme on, outside, move it!

Garrett shuffled lazily through the door and into the yard. "Okay," William began, but the phone cut him off. "We're teaching you to play football like you own the sport when I'm done with this call." He went inside and answered the phone. "Yes?"

"Hello, are you William?" He waited before answering "Yes?" The lady on the other end put him on hold, then a voice boomed through the earpiece. "Hey, Willy!" He sighed. His brother would call from work every day to check up on Garrett. Garrett was supposed to spend the summer with his uncle. So far, William was pretty disappointed. "Calling about Garrett?" "No! I was hoping to talk to him!" William shook his head and yelled out the door. "Phone!"

Garrett gratefully ran inside, thankful to be out of the sunlight. He picked up the phone. "Hello?" His father's voiced was loud. As long as William had known his brother, it had been a loud voice. "How's my boy doing?" "Well, umm..." he turned around. William was watching him, expressionless. "Uncle WIlliam and I were going to practice some football." He had tried- and failed- to project enthusiasm into his voice. William shook his head. "Well, Garrett, be safe. You have that trip to the bank in a month. You wouldn't want to have crutches." Thanks, Dad, that helped a lot.

After Garrett was done talking, William went to the bathroom. Sure, Garrett might slip away, but he'd have another chore to do if he did. WOuld Garrett really risk another chore? He had so many already because of his multiple goof-ups. When he was done, he exited, expecting to find Garrett standing in the living room, waiting for him eagerly. Maybe the boy would finally- FINALLY- come around.

As if. Garrett had taken the opportunity to bolt out the back door, down the street, and to the store, bumping into someone on his way. "Oof," he grunted, losing the wind in his chest. He turned around to apologize to the person he had bumped into.

Garrett avoided her eyes and uttered a simple apology. "Sorry..." He didn't run away from her, in case she ried to call the cops or something. She may have thought he was a thief. He didn't want to hurt anyone though... He stayed there.

William punched a wall. How dare he run away! He needed to learn respect, hot to be a man! Not run off to the store or the arcade every single chance he got. It was William's brother's fault. He knew all along that the kid was spoiled. He thought of all of the exta stuff to toughen Garrett up some more.

Garrett breathed ut a sigh of relief and sat down. She decided to leave him alone. Thank God. She could have pounded him into the ground without a problem. "Garrett!" Oh God... he turned around to see a red-faced William. William started yelling at him to get home, blah blah blah. Whatever...

William grabbed Garrett's arm and started pulling him towards the house. Push-ups? Sit-ups? He needed to learn somehow, and technically he couldn't give Garrett parental punishments. "I should make you do push-ups until your arms detach from your shoulders!" he shouted. arrett looked legitimately scared. THat was good.

Garrett wanted to cry. He was getting yelled at for not wanting to play football? Was that honestly enough to yell at him? He was 16, for Christ's sake! Not that he'd point that out to William. Garrett sighed and followed his uncle, having frightening images of various strenuous exercises playing out in his head.

Garrett was halfway home before he did the unspeakable. He spoke. (Ironic, huh?) "William, sir. Permission to speak." He had to ask permission. His uncle was militaristic around Garrett. William sighed. "Garrett, twenty should do fine." Garett hung his head. He was going to bring up that he hadn't eaten all day. William would feed him. Probably after the punishment. At least William could cook well. His own mother couldn't seem to operate a stove under any circumstances.

((I don't let RPs die. I'll rememebr without the bumps :)))

William stopped, causing Garrett to bump into him. William glared at him and whispered, his lips barely moving. "Someone's following us."

Garrett turned around and looked. He didn't know what kind of person he was supposed to be looking for. Maybe Uncle William is crazy, he thought. Either way, he didn't see anything. "LEt's go," William told him.

((I'll bump this then when you're not around. Okay?))

They made it to the house in silence. William turned around and barked at Garrett. "Drop down! Twenty!" Garrett did as he was told, reaching seven before he collapsed. Deep down, William felt bad. Maybe it was just the way Garrett was. He snapped himself out of it. No, boys needed to toughen up. At sixteen, he had to start being a man. Now! "Start again!"

Garrett groaned. He got back up, catching a glimpse of something moving in the window. He figured it was his imagination. Suddenly, he was tired of William and all of it. He got back down. One, two, three... "All the way down!" William yelled. Seventeen, eighteen, nineteen, twenty. He'd done it! He looked up. His uncle was smiling. That was a pleasant change. "I think you're figuring it out." He walked into the kitchen and opened the refrigerator, pulling out a package of hamburger. "Was that hard?

Garrett shook his head. Truthfully, it was easy. All he had to do was desire to shut William up, and he'd do fine in everything he did. He stepped outside, leaning against the house.

William took the hamburger out of the package, swelling with pride in his nephew. He finally understood! He could start doing a little more and a little more, and Garrett would become a man. He formed the hamburger into patties and pulled out a griddle plate, setting it on the stove and turning it on. He could cook him hamburgers, try football again, and go to bed with peace of mind.

Garrett walked over to the football on the ground, picked it up, and kicked it. The punt went for over forty yards. He wanted to be a kicker if he ahd to play, not a lineman or a safety. He'd even take receiver. William was so bent on having his way though... Garret walked back towards the outside wall and pulled out a Snickers bar, opening it and taking a small bite. Bet William wouldn't guess that would happen.

Garrett looked out and saw the girl he'd bumped into earlier and froze. He didn't know what to do. Was she going t ocome and beat him up? He didn't know what to do.

Once the burgers were finished, William put two of them onto buns, then kept the others. He liekd his without bread, the other two were for his nephew. He put ketchup, mustard, and crinkle cut dill pickles on the two sandwiches. "Garrett!"

Garrett rushed inside. He grabbedhis burgers, bit into one, muttered a "thanks, then ran out a different door so the girl from earlier wouldn't see him.

Garrett pretended he was eating with a friend. Pretty juvenile for a 16 year-old boy, but he didn't really have any friends. Not even at school. He sighed and ate his burger slowly. "Any takers for  a second burger?" he asked, knowing that no one was around to answer.

Garrett stared. She had appeared out of nowhere, and he was scared for his life. Might as well keep his word. He grabbed the second burger and walked it to her, placing it in her hand. "Umm, here you go," he murmured, not looking her in the eye.

William wondered what was so interesting to Garrett outside. He walked outside, then stopped as he seen him giving a girl his burger. "Garrett, who's your friend?" he asked, hoping to God he sounded kind. Judging by Garrett's stunned reaction, he had.

William noticed her tension and the hand in her pocket. He knew she had a weapon. He evaluated his options quickly. He could call the cops, but she was tiny and probably uick enough to escape before they got there. He could take her, but he didn't want Garrett to come under harm. She wanted food though. "Would you like something more to eat?" he asked her. He was a little concerned. Looking harder, it seemed like she hadn't eaten a good meal in, well, her life.
