TO explain the title, I'd have to use a quote from someone I know: "A heart is kind of a box. You have to open it to show what's inside"

Name: Gunner Van Nielson
Age: 15
Personality: Due to the way his life has been, and thanks to the environment he grew up in, Gunner has a mistrust of everyone in general. Around his family, he is kind, and he tends to be a good kid (except around his brother, who irritates him to no end). Around others, however, he's very avoidant from his peers due to his life in Chicago. When he finally befriends someone, Gunner can be very fun-loving.

Looks: Gunner is about 5'8". He's slim, weighing in at 115 pounds. Gunenr is very pale, with medium brown hair reaching just below his ears and amber colored eyes. He wears contacts that make his eyes appear duller. He has a mole on the back of his nech about half the size of a normal pencil eraser. He usually dresses in black or gray, and he almost always wears dark-colored Converses.

Bio: Gunner is from a six-person family in Chicago. His mother works part-time at a gas station. His father is a truck driver and isn't home much.  He also has two brothers and a twin sister. Gunner likes older rock music, basketball, and Skittles.

Terrylee was walking through the school.. She was extremley glad she had finally earned enough trust to go to public school. She said hi to a few of her friends, exchanged glares with her enemies, and ended up basically being almost 15 minutes late for class.

Ugh. This again.

Granted, Gunner was secretly grateful that it was on a smaller scale, Instead of over a thousand eyes watching his progress down the hall, no one watched, and even if they did, it would only be about half the number. Gunner checked his school map, stopped, looked around, and turned down a hall.

His teacher was standing outside of the class. The young man waited nervously for his students. Time for English, Gunner thought with a slight groan. He went in and sat down, realizing with no surprise that he was about ten minutes early. He pulled out a book and read.

Terrylee finally made it into class. "Sorry I'm late!" she called out and flopped down next to a guy. She looked closer and realized that he was a drop dead gorgeous guy. Blushing slightly, she shifted in her seat. The teacher nodded to her nervously. “It’s alright, Ms…..?” Terrylee smiled sympathetically. “Brewer is the name. Terrylee Brewer.” A loud mouth voiced came from the front of the class. “Yeah, ‘cause she’s always brewing up some crazy thing in the only thing that’s small about her-her brain!” A smattering of laughter went around the room, and Terrylee laughed too, though it did not reach her eyes.

Gunner had never seen anyone show up gracefully tardy for class. Then again, this school was in the middle of the most boring town on the planet. He noticed that the disruption sat right by him. He glanced over and took her in. She gave off an aura of confidence, despite the words she had just endured. He also recognized her as the sociable, outgoing type. The kind that could break trust. He directed his attention to the teacher- his schedule said Mr. Szorilinski. Whatever.

The teacher fiddled with some papers. "I'll be right back." he rushed out of the room and immediatly a boy jumped and rushed over to Terrylee. "You! What are you doing here?" he shouted in her face. "DOn't you make my life miserable enough?" Terrylee's fist slightly clenched and she gave him a tight lipped smile. "Nope," she told him, popping the 'p'.

Unnoticed, Gunner clenched his teeth. He didn't want to interfere; after all, his goal was to do well in the new school with few to no problems, and to not trust other. He couldn't watch something like this happen though.

He reached in his pocket and grabbed a piece of a half-melted Hershey bar from his pocket and tossed it down the back of the boy's shirt.

"YYEEEOOOOWWW!" he screeched. "It's on my back! Get it off!" he began dancing around and a few kids took out their cellphones to videotape it while the rest were laughing. Except Terrylee. She got up and pushed the guy into a chair. "HUsh up, Garret. It's chocolate, for God's sake!"

Gunner feverishly hoped that Mr. Szorilinski walked through the door. The last thing he needed was to be noticed. No one notice me, no one notice me...

Garrett whimpered. "Are you sure?" Terrylee smirked. "Weeeelllll, it was something very slimy and brown......" she trailed off and Garrett scremaed, leaping up and dancing around again. He knocked her over, and she fell backwards, landing straight in the new boy'd lap.
