"No," Isaac giggled. "Girls are smelly and they don't like playing armies. Do you like playing armies?" Liam smiled, his heart swelling with love at the exchange between his girlfriend and nephew.
"Armies is my favorite game.",Claire said, without hesitation. "I always like to play as the good guy so I can win." Claire had a small smirk on her face, and she had almost forgotten about the food on her plate.
Liam chuckled as he leant over to Claire. "You should come with me next time I babysit him," he suggested. "He's usually afraid of strangers but for some reason he seems to like you."
Claire smiled over at Liam as she made a dent in her food. "I wouldn't mind doing it, as long as I don't have work that day.",Claire explained. She always had to work so much, she hoped her boss would be understanding about her new relationship status.
Liam quickly polished off his food, eager to get away from the table. He slipped one hand under the table and gently stroked Claire's leg until she had finished eating.
Claire couldn't help but turn a light shade of pink as Liam rubbed her leg. She continued to eat her food as fast as she could. She patted her tiny stomach a few times and could still feel the warmth of the meal. "That was delicious, Mi—Jean.",she complimented.
Liam stood up quickly, eager to get away. He put his and Claire's plates in the dishwasher and tucked his chair under the table. "That's was great, thanks Mum," he said hurriedly. "Can we get down from the table now? We have heaps of homework to do."
"I have a lot of math and vocabulary to complete.",Claire said as she stood up hesitantly and tucked her chair in as well. She didn't wish to be rude, she was simply following Liam's lead. She waited for Jean's permission before she left the dining area entirely.
"Of course dears," Jean agreed. "I'll come up and find you to give you a lift home in around an hour, alright?" Liam understood this was a subtle warning that they should be working at that point so she wouldn't have to walk in on anything awkward.
"Sounds lovely, Jean. Thank you for everything.",Claire said with a soft smile on her lips. She turned to Liam and lowered her voice a bit,"Maybe we'll actually get some work done this time?"
Liam sighed. There was nothing he wanted less than to work with Claire as a distraction, but he could see her point. "Maybe," he smirked as they left the kitchen and headed upstairs.
Claire sat down on one of the bean bags again and opened a book. "So, back to English.",she said as she looked through her notes. She began to write down definitions to words that had more letters than the alphabet itself, without using a dictionary.
Liam flopped down next to her and copied down what she was writing, not really understanding it at all. All his brain seemed to able to focus on was the piece of hair hanging in Claire's face and how much he wanted to brush it away.
Once Claire got to the twentieth word she stopped, she had no idea what it meant. "Do you have a dictionary lying around? I don't know what encephalopathy means.",she said with a sigh.
Claire's voice startled him out of his thoughts and he leapt up to go fetch the huge, dust covered dictionary which lay on his top shelf. It was safe to say that it didn't get much use.
Claire grabbed the dusty book from Liam and set it down on the cold floor. She dusted it off and opened it. "Encephalopathy, any disease in which the functioning of the brain is affected by some agent or condition.",she read outloud. She scribbled it down neatly and quickly.
"How on earth do you know all of these words?" Liam marvelled. "You're like a human dictionary, that's what." He leant down and kissed her tenderly on the forehead.
"No, Sir.",Claire said as she shook her head back and forth. "Elementary school year 5 I had Mr. Benningsworth, and I got in trouble a lot. Instead of the regular detention, he would make us read the dictionary and write down words that we didn't know."
"You? Getting in trouble?" Liam said incredulously. "I can't say I can picture it. Teachers love you, don't they?"
"Most do, Mr. Benningsworth didn't, because my brothers were menaces in his class.",Claire said with a sigh. "For better or for worse I know words that I will never use in my life time."
