((It's completely fine :) I just didn't want this rp to die out.))
Lorica didn't dismount because she had nothing to lead Wren with, but she followed Gawain off the road and into the trees. She peered out from behind a branch, trying to see who was coming. She didn't have to wait long.
"It's the King's Men," she hissed, turning to face Gawain. "Why are they travelling in these parts? They never come here."
((Oh, believe me, I don't want it to die out either. XD I really love this one. I just need to pound it into my head to remember to post! ))
Gawain's face grew tense.
"Oh, no." His heart began to pound faster, and his fingers automatically clenched on the branch he was holding. "I. Am. So. Stupid," he moaned quietly, feeling like banging his head against the tree. "Why, oh, why, oh why."
Lorica's heart clenched and immediatly she was filled with suspicion. "Gawain..." she said slowly, her hazel eyes searching his face for any hint that he wasn't who he promised he was. "What have you done?"
Gawain looked at the ground, then lifted his chin. He was so frustrated with himself, that he could barely look Lorica in the eye.
"I'm sorry... I guess it's not as bad as I made out... but it could be. Two weeks ago, I met some guy at a town a ways back. I trusted him, and told him a lot about myself. Several days later, I found out that he was an agent of the king, sent to find and kill me. It seems that the king is nervous about people like me showing up. Anyway, I tied this guy up and left him in the cellar of an old, ancient mill, because I chickened out at the last moment, and didn't want to kill him."
Gawain pounded his fist against his leg. "He must have escaped- and run straight back to the king for help." Brushing his finger through his hair, he brought his anguish-filled eyes up to meet Lorica's. "I'm sorry, Lorica. Now I've gotten both of us into trouble... if they find you with me, they'll kill both of us. I can't believe I didn't tell you about that episode before."
Lorica swallowed and looked down at the floor. She had trusted Gawain before and it was ridiculous to stop doing so just because of a stupid mistake he had made. "Well, I can promise you I'm not a double agent of the king," she teased lightly.
Gawain smiled, wanly. At least Lorica wasn't screaming at him because of his idiotic behaviour. "That's comforting."
He looked over the branch he was hiding behind, at the fast approaching men and horses. "Soo... what do you think we should do? Hide here, and hope they don't see us? Or should we make a run for it, in the opposite direction?"
"The way I see it, we have three choices," Lorica sighed. "Firstly, we can make a run for it. I don't fancy our chances though. They have expert archers and their horses are bred to be superbly fast. Second, we hide here. The trouble is, we can't rely on them not having dogs to sniff us out and if they do discover we're here, there's nowhere to run to. We're pretty much dead. The other option is to fight. We have the element of surprise and I doubt there are many of them. They were probably counting on catching you on your own, thinking you'd be easy to kill. No offence."
((Okay! I'm back. Finally. Apologies for the absence, and apologies in advance, for if I disappear again. After December, things'll be back to normal around my house! ))
"None taken." Gawain smiled, but immediately grew tense again, as he listened to the sound of the approachers. Did he actually hear dogs, or was it his imagination? "Maybe we SHOULD fight. What weapon do you use?"
He realized that he'd never asked Lorica what she fought with. "I've got my sword."
((Sorry it's short! But I did have a question... have you mentioned in this RP what weapon Lorica uses? XD I can't remember if I ever said what Gawain uses either. ))
((I don't remember if I did so I'll just make it up now.))
"I have a dagger," Lorica said, pulling it out from her belt. She eyed his sword with envy. She wished she had one but she couldn't afford one, and bisides, it would look suspicious for a woman to be carrying one.
((Just bumping this so it doesn't get lost (:))
((Oh, thanks. I'm so sorry about not posting. And my mind is going ten different directions and I can't post right now, because I can't think about the story properly. Would you mind terribly if we put this RP on hold until after Christmas? I'll have a lot more time then, and my mind won't be so confuddled with other things. ))
((Yeah, that's completely fine :) I was just going through and bumping all the threads I'm in.))
((Are you ready to start this up again?))
((Sure! I can only do one post today, though, because I'm feeling cruddy. Flu, don'tcha know. So it's hard for me to concentrate! But here goes: ))
"I'll bet you're deadly with that thing!" Gawain smiled, but he meant it. He chewed on his lower lip, and peered out from behind the brush again. "Here they come. It would appear to be seven men... and a bunch of dogs."
Turning to look at Lorica, he held out his hand. "I think we can beat them, but just in case... thanks for agreeing to travel with me."
((I hope you feel better soon. It sucks to be ill this time of year :( ))
Lorica took his hand and squeezed it. "We're not going to die," she said stubbornly, not sure whether she believed it or not. She gripped her dagger tightly in her other hand, twisting it round. "Are you ready?" she asked.
"Ready as I'll ever be," Gawain said, trying to recover his senses from the second when Lorica had taken his hand. He hadn't expected the thrill that had gone through him at her touch. But- he had more important matters at hand.
Shaking it off, he turned towards the brush once more. "On my count or yours?"
Lorica couldn't stall any more. "Three, two, one!" she whispered, before breaking out from the bushes. She felt a rush of adrenaline kick in and rushed forward, hoping Gawain was following her.
As Lorica jumped ahead of him, Gawain followed her, with a leap. After exiting the brush, the company of riders were only about twenty feet away, and coming closer. At the sight of the two warriors charging them, they gave a shout, and spurred their horses forward. "It's him!"
The pack of dogs scattered at their noisy entrance. Lorica met the first soldier and stabbed her dagger into his leg, causing him to fall off his horse. She swung herself up onto the beast, as there was no way she could manage to fight them from the ground. She charged through the group, stabbing with her dagger left, right and centre.
((Ooookay, this is my first RP battle, so lets see how this goes. XD ))
Even though the dogs scattered, several of them still came at Gawain. Viciously snarling, they hurled themselves at his legs, trying to bring him down. He swung his sword wildly, and managed to impale several of them, throwing them away from him, where they lay on the ground, bleeding and dazed. He felt terrible for not being able to put them out of their misery, but it was the middle of a battle, and he was fighting for his life. A horsemen charged directly at him, raising his sword to bring down on Gawain's head. Gawain blocked it with his sword raised over his head, and turned and thrust it into the man's side.
