Gawain sat down in the hay, and leaned against the side of a stall.
He began a bit awkwardly. He trusted this girl, but he didn't know why... just something about her. But he didn't know if he was ready to tell her everything.
"I'm Gawain, and let's forget my last name for a bit. It has bad memories. I'm 17. On my own. Riding towards the center of the kingdom on business, with my horse for company. What about you?"

Lorica smiled at him. "My name is Lorica, my last name remains a mystery too. I am also 17, but only just. I'm lucky that my father couldn't bear to let me get married otherwise that's where I'd probably be stuck - with some man I hardly know and don't particularly like either. I'm headed into the same place as you, coincidently."

Gawain chuckled. "I'm fortunate that I'm not stuck marrying some girl I don't know or like. Really, you're heading to the center of the kingdom? That's a long journey!"
He looked at her, quizzically. "You don't have to answer, if you don't want to, but... do you belong to a noble family? Your speech and manner are more refined then the, er, usual girls you see around.

Lorica scowled. "Not through choice," she grumbled. "My father is a kind man, and a good one, but the death of my mother drove him mad with grief. He didn't do much to help the peasants living on his land, something I've never really forgiven him for. I suppose we all make mistakes. Anyway, what about you?"

Gawain sighed, and shifted nervously. "I'm- that is, I was, a nobleman's son. So, I know what you mean. My father wasn't too bad- just stern. My mother was the nicest woman you'll ever meet. "
He looked uncomfortable. "But then- well, bad stuff happened. Now I'm here."

Lorica pulled her knees up to her chest and leant her chin on them. "I know plenty about bad stuff," she commented lightly, although she was completely serious. Her childhood had been unbelievably privileged compared to that of some of her friends. It wasn't uncommon for people to starve to death, including one of her closest friends, a boy named Barnaby. She shivered and snuggled further info the straw.

(( Oh, thanks! I appreciate it. =D ))
Gawain noticed that Lorica seemed to be a bit cold. Awkwardly, he shifted his cloak off of his shoulders, and held it out to her. "Want to borrow this? It's fine; I don't need it right now."
He was feeling a strange kinship to this girl. It seemed like they'd been through a lot of the same stuff. He decided to risk an awful lot, through one comment. "So... what do you think of our King Maugrim? I've heard... lots of different opinions."

Lorica looked at him, trying to figure out what she was supposed to say. She had a feeling that she could trust him, and her feelings were generally correct, but this was dangerous.
"I wouldn't know..." she said cautiously. "Hypothetically, if I was opposed to him, I would say that he rules the country cruelly and without reason for a number of his actions. I might also argue that he makes life very difficult for those who are not at the top of the social ladder and it is his rule which has caused the suffering and death common with the peasents. But that's all hypothetically, of course."

Gawain smiled, grimly. His suspicions were correct. Lorica or her family, too, had been mistreated by the king at some point in time. "Hypothetically, of course!"  He noticed the girl's caution, and approved. Lorica knew what she was doing.
"If I were opposed to him, hypothetically, I'd say the same things, actually," Gawain agreed.

"Isn't that funny," Lorica laughed tensely. She paused, fiddling with a piece of straw in her fingers. "Am... am I allowed to ask what you really think? Non-hypothetically. I'm sorry if that's a far too personal question, I know men get funny about talking about their political views."

Gawain laughed. "Yeah, they do. But I don't mind, usually."
SItting up straighter, he spoke again. "Well... I can't believe I'm actually saying this out loud. Non-hypothetically, I think exactly the way I just mentioned hypothetically." Gawain set his jaw. "And I don't care what anyone thinks. They can banish me, torture me, disown me, or even murder me, but they can't get me to change my mind."
He looked at Lorica, a bit defiantly, as if daring her to change his mind.

Lorica stared straight back at him, a little fearful but straight in his eyes all the same. "You really think that?" she whispered. "And this isn't a trap? You won't arrest me as soon as I tell you that I believe exactly the same thing as you?"

Gawain was gazing right back at her, searching for anything to falter in her eyes.
"I promise it's not a trap," he said, slowly. "You seriously think the same way? Because that's really what I believe. And if what you say is true, then you're the first person I've met in months, that believes that way."

Lorica shrugged. "What can I say? I hate him more than I've hated a single person before," she told him, fire in her eyes. "My friends have died, the people who practically brought me up have suffered, yet nobody does anything about it. As soon as you bring up rebelling they run away and hide, or worse, report you and get you exiled."

Gawain slumped back against the side of the stall, trying to take it all in.
"Exactly! Of all the kings that have ever abused their authority, King Maugrim is the worst."
He kept his voice low, to make sure they weren't overheard. "I'm no anarchist- we need authority, but we need just rulers."
Gawain snorted. "When I told my father that, it lead to where I am now."

Lorica smiled sympathetically. "What happened?" she asked gently. "When I got caught, my father acted as if me standing up for the people was the worst thing I could ever have done to him, but at least he fought for me against the king's men. Well, pleaded rather than fought. I can't imagine what it would be like to have your father... agree with your exile."

Gawain glanced at Lorica. She seemed genuinely sympathetic, so he continued.
"Well... my father isn't a tyrant or anything, don't get me wrong. But he is a strong law-abider. He puts the law first, everywhere. And he's pretty stern. So, when I, er, told him how I felt about the king, he wanted to ground me. I disobeyed, and the king's men got wind of my words. My father chose not to intervene, because he said I deserved punishment for treason against a sovereign. He just doesn't get that this sovereign needs to go!"
Gawain sighed. "I mean, obeying laws is great. But my father puts law and king before justice and family. The king exiled me, and when I.... um... shouted some nasty stuff at the king before they dragged me off, my father disowned me."
