Gawain spotted something dark in the floor of a stall... that was considerably smaller then the horse sitting next to it.
Quick as a flash, he turned quietly, stepped into the stall, and grabbed at the dark figure. He caught an arm, and pulled the figure upright.
   "Who're you?" he hissed angrily.

((Btw, I don't think I'll be able to post on here again today... my family's kinda busy this afternoon. But I'm glad you're back! ))

Lorica shrank back and tried to pull away. "Get off me!" she hissed, trying to make her voice sound low and manly. "I have a dagger and I'm not afraid to spill your blood with it!" She didn't, and she was, but the man wasn't to know that. She kicked and fought, trying to break free of his grasp.

Gawain held on all the tighter.
"The fact that you might perhaps have a dagger, would just make me hold onto you tighter! Who. Are. You. And what are you doing in here?"
He sensed something strange about this man... man? Or boy? But he couldn't quite put his finger on it.

Lorica had a million excuses lined up for if she was ever caught, but none seemed appropriate. "I am too poor to afford a room for the night!" she blurted. Not strictly true - she had enough wealth at home to purchase a castle - but close enough to her current situation. "Now please, let me go."

Gawain put his finger on it. This was no boy! The speech was not the same... But he refrained from telling the girl his discovery. "Too poor, eh?"
Letting go of her arm, he stepped back, but still slightly blocked her way out of the stall.
"I'm not going to hurt you, if you truly mean no harm."

Lorica looked for an escape route but, finding none, stepped back. "I won't hurt you for the moment," she said, trying to sound bold. "Try and grab me again and I won't be so forgiving. In answer to your previous question, I have enough to house my horse but not myself. What else could I possibly be sleeping in his stall for?"

"You have a point," Gawain agreed. "And I find it commendable that you chose to house your horse instead of yourself. But you have to admit, its a little suspicious to find a, er, young person out in a stall in the middle of the night."
Stepping back further, he crossed his arms. "You're a young woman, aren't you? You don't sound like a boy."

Lorica scowled. "I most certainly am a man!" she growled, deliberately lowering her voice in order to convince him. "I find it offensive that you could possibly think that I was a woman. What's more suspicious is why you're here."

Now it was Gawain's turn to look defensive.
"If you're not a woman, then I'm a giraffe! I'm just not going to make things embarrasing for you by trying to prove it!"
He scowled. This girl was getting on his nerves. Who did she think she was? "And for your information, I couldn't sleep, and was visiting my horse. There's nothing suspicious about that!"

Lorica sighed, moving so that she was leant up against the wall. "What gave me away?" she asked. "You know, for future reference. I'll be gone by the morning but I want to ensure I'll be safe from detection for the rest of my travels back to my homeland."

   "Your voice."
Gawain stared at her, curiously. "You need to try less to make it low, and concentrate more on making it less distinct. If you speak quietly, and slur your words a little, you'll pass as a young boy. But why do you want to travel like this anyway? Don't most women have companions? When you travel in disguise, you look like you're running from the law or something!"
He laughed drily, eyebrowns contracting, thinking how close to his own situation his suggestion was.

Lorica chuckled nervously. "That's crazy..." she laughed. "Me on the run from the law? Insane, I tell you. And I do have a companion. Wren keeps me company when I need it. I do have to keep in the shadows to avoid robbers and highwaymen but I'm quite capable of looking after myself." Lorica carefully avoided the topic of why she was travelling. She didn't think treason and exile would go down too well.

Gawain shifted his feet. "Admittedly, horses are better companions. They don't talk about your blasted past in front of the wrong people." He scowled, remembering his last human companion. Gawain had almost gotten arrested again that time!
Suddenly, Gawain got the feeling that he'd said too much. He still thought this girl was mixed up with the law somehow, but he couldn't risk anything right now.
"Alright, have fun in your stall," he said abruptly, spinning on his heel, and walking towards the barn door.

Lorica was surprised by the man's ubrupt exit and made to go after him. "Wait!" she called. "You never told me where you were travelling to. If you have nowhere you have to be right now we could talk for a bit longer. I mean, it's a bit lonely here." She looked at him wistfully, not wanting to have to sit alone again.

Gawain halted, startled. Turning slowly, he looked keenly at her. "I'm- traveling to the center of the kingdom. I've got some... er, business to attend to." He walked back towards her, hesitantly. "I'd be happy to talk if you want to... I think this might be the first real conversation I've had in months."
He chuckled.

Lorica smiled at him tentatively. "Yes, horses don't really reply do they?" she joked. "That would sort all my problems - a horse who could talk when I wanted it to, but would keep quiet when required too. Also one which didn't eat away all my money, but that's another matter. Anyway, tell me about yourself."

Gawain sat down in the hay, and leaned against the side of a stall.
He began a bit awkwardly. He trusted this girl, but he didn't know why... just something about her. But he didn't know if he was ready to tell her everything.
"I'm Gawain, and let's forget my last name for a bit. It has bad memories. I'm 17. On my own. Riding towards the center of the kingdom on business, with my horse for company. What about you?"
