"Just keep your eyes off for a minute." Violet told him, slipping out of the water and pulling her clothes on even though she was still dripping wet. "Krae must not have noticed when I circled around. It's not his fault, and you're lucky it's not yours either because it if was I'd kill you."

She squeezed the water out of her hair, walking up to him. "You can look now." She informed him calmly, crossing her arms over her chest.

Krae, from now on make sure you know where I am before you send men my way?

Sorry Violet...

Gable obediently closed his fingers over his eyes again. His keen ears picked up the sounds Violet getting out of the water underneath her talking. "Well, I don't think you would ever be able to kill me. Your savior, your guardian angel, your knight-on-shining-dragon, your comrade-in-" he removed his hand from his eyes, "-arms."

Gable's eyes swept over Violet, noticing her crossed arms, and made a mental sigh. I'm whooped, I really am. Putting up with Violet, man, I can't even keep up my lovely charm! It's my infamous luck that landed me with the most sensitive, temperamental, violent, bipolar, beautiful girl in this side of the country.

Almost guiltily, he was reminded of the real reason he was here. Not to play survival, but a real job. Even more guilty was the feeling when Gable thought of the wanted posters, and what that meant for his home and the other Dragon Riders.

Nonetheless, Gable fixed his signature sideways grin on his face even though he felt like doing anything but. "No need to look so petulant. Catastrophe avoided, right? Anyhow, I set up some snares, so we can check them on the way back. He offered his elbow in a mockingly courteous gesture.

Violet heaved a great and dramatic sigh, shaking her head. "My-idiot-with-a-plan." She muttered, more for herself. "Gable, what exactly IS the plan again?" She asked, seeming tired beyond being aggressive.

She felt emberarssed that she could let something like what had happened happen. She should have been more careful in knowing Gable wasn't going to wander upon her by accident. In truth, the thought of him seeing her naked made her blush, but it didn't make her angry as she thought it would.

(I think part of your post got cut off. I don't remember the names either, so if you want to we could just make up new names.)

((Oops, I'm at school, so I didn't notice that until now. Here's the entire post.))

((I forgot all of the city names I made up before, and I can't find them in the previous pages, so I'm going to remake them.))

Gable caught her mutter, and pretended to look offended. "We'll, excuse you. I don't don't think anything I've done insofar has warranted me the title of idiot." he said indignantly, puffing out his chest in the slightest. But he took pity on Violet and decided not to pursue, it, and let the pretense drop.

"Alright, the plan is to-" Gable held up his hand, to count off the steps, "Fly to Kelth, drop you and Krae off, then try not to die, er, fly to-" Gable caught himself before he told Violet everything- the letter, the mission. It would be safer for her- and him- if she didn't know. The thought of Violet getting hurt- or worse- for something that he was responsible made him feel sick.

"-Complete my job," he finished lamely. Then afterwards, he didn't quite know what to do. It was obvious that the Dragon Rider compound had been compromised, so there was no going back home, unless he could do something about that.

What, like staging a plan to overthrow the empirical forces in my home? Leave that to the revolutionaries. Though, Gable nursed the small hope that he could convince the receivers of his message to march all the way to the Compound.

Violet sighed, a hint of frustration flowing through her, although she forced it down knowing it was no use to let it bug her. Still, the fact that he still wanted to dump her off in Kelth with Krae made her ache inside. She didn't want to stay in Kelth. She realized that for some reason, she really wanted to just stay with him.

This, she believed, must had been a result of some sickness. He got on her nerves a lot. Why would she want to stay with him if she practically hated him? Well, at least she wanted to hate him. The problem seemed that she couldn't stay mad at him over anything, even his annoying attitude.

"Gable, is it even safe to drop me off and run off on your own? What if I don't want to stay behind in Kelth?" She had extreme doubts he'd consider letting her continue to travel with him. He did dislike her, after all.

Gable was once again confronted with conflicting desires. Whenever he took his eyes off of Violet it seemed something disasterous happened. But if he did take her, well, not only would that almost garuntee a death sentence, but it would be against the rules that he followed as a Dragon Rider.

Not including the fact that most of those rules have been broken by me at one point or another. A Master Hemme said, I only seem to acknowledge them when they benefit me.

But thinking about that gave him a sour taste in his mouth, reminding him of thieving scoundrel life he would have probably adopted had Irida not hatched for him. Me becoming a Dragon Rider has changed my life for the better. Wish I could say the same for Violet. All it's seemed to do was drag her into a tangled deathly mess that she could've otherwise been blissfully ignorant of.

These brooding thoughts didn't sit well in his mind. Violet's sigh of frustration brought up another problem- Violet seemed less inclined to follow rules than even Gable was, and he doubted that she would stay in Kelth if he told her to.

Gable dragged his hand through his golden hair, his mouth twisting down the slightest bit. "It's safer than where I'm going. And if you died, well," Gable felt his thread of conversation heading in a dangerous direction, and switched courses, turning it into an ill humored joke, "I can't even begin to imagine the amount of trouble I would get in with the Compound if I let a magical prodigy such as yourself die."

It wasn't the Compound Gable was afraid of. Rather, it was how he would feel, if something happened to Violet. But Violet would obviously be horrified and disgusted if she knew. Although, after what had happened in the stable where she was held prisoner, he wasn't altogether too sure anymore.

Violet shook her head, finding his lack of mention of his own feelings towards getting her killed a bit hurtful. "We both know I won't stay in Kelth if I don't want to. At this point I don't care about the danger." She looked down, the feelings swirling around within her making her feel almost sick.

"Please..." She said in a faint voice, hardly able to believe she was actually talking like this. "Gable, don't leave me behind..." The emotion in her voice seemed so heavy, it was a wonder her voice didn't break.

Gable absently brushed aside a low hanging branch, catching a leaf between his slender fingers. He twirled it by the stem, his emotions fighting a brutal war. He felt like the villain, here, like suddenly what was right was wrong, and what was wrong was right.

What was strange though, was the anger. He was angry- at what? Was it Violet, for causing him to think irrationally? Was it all of that anger at the Emperor finally bubbling up? Was it the realization that no matter what happened, he would never have a break?

It was these things that Gable had always prided himself on not thinking about. But what about now, when it really mattered? When Violet spoke, when she begged him to have her stay with him- it took every ounce of self-restraint not to let loose the pent-up feelings that roiled inside of him, to not explain that, yes, he did want her to come with, for reasons he yet had names for.

Gable let the leaf flutter to the ground, his jaw clenched on his otherwise composed face. "Vi, you just don't understand. If something, if something happened to you, I don't, I just-" The rawness was seeping through, and Gable couldn't look at Violet, "-I just don't think I could take it," he said forcefully, as if the words were waiting to spill from his mouth.

"Please, Vi. I'm begging you. I don't want to have to choose. Between your safety and your happiness."

Violet winced and looked down, a sinking feeling in her stomach. She didn't like the way he was acting. To her it seemed like he really hated being with her. He really hated feeling anything toward her.

She shook her head, pushing past him and starting to walk toward camp. "I'd sooner die than go to some unfamiliar place and be alone with Krae knowing I could never be at home." She muttered bitterly.

There was a tightness in Violet's throat from trying not to cry. Why couldn't he just accept her of her own choice?

Great gods above, why are girls so complicated?

Gable didn't understand. What did he have to say, to get Violet to realize that he only wanted her to stay in Kelth so she could be safe. And, in so many words, he had said that, hadn't he? What more could he do, could he say to turn this mess around.

Gable raked his hand through his hair again- by now his nervous habit probably made him look like some sort of deranged porcupine, but for once he wasn't really caring about that. Irida's voice in his head surprised him- she ha been listening through him the entire time, and he found himself mortified for a second.

Gable, stop beating around the bush and tell her. That's what she wants to hear.

Are you sure?

I'm a female too, don't you forget.

Gable turned after Violet, and gently took her by the elbow. He had a brief moment of reflection before speaking. Being such a.ss-hole in the past is really turning out to bite me in the back.

"Violet, you don't understand. I would sooner die than to see you harmed in any way, or, gods forbid, killed, because of a selfish decision made on my part," he said, his voice cracking slightly at the end. Gable hoped, prayed that she would believe him. He who was known for joking and kidding! Never had he appreciated the value of appearing earnest as he did now.

Violet winced, not looking at him. She stood there a moment, head hung low, wet hair in her face. She was trying to decide what to believe. She was trying to figure out her feelings, which were confusing.

"I understand..." She mumbled. "Just...I'd rather be taking the risk. It's sort of selfish of you not to let me come, when you think about it. But whatever...I'm not going to argue about this or anything." She pulled away from his touch and started walking again.

Oh, so wanting to save someone's life is being selfish, now?

Gable didn't even want to being to try and puzzle together what was going on between him and Violet. He told her the truth- wasn't that supposed to do the trick? In the stories, isn't that what mended rifts and made everything understandable and all right in the end.

Gable, this isn't the stories. What, did you expect her to fling herself into your arms and agree to everything you say?

Gable simmered for a few moments, his hand growing cold from where he had touched Violet. He sighed through his nose and picked up behind her. The pressures of being serious for so long were working on him. "But there's a time for everything, right?" He stopped himself, quieting.

Gable was appalled with himself at what he said next. "I'll think about it. I've got to make a stop in Kelth anyways... but I'll think about it."

Violet stopped and faced him, her eyes lighting up with hope and a hint of happiness. A faint smile found its way onto her lips and she had to stop herself from hugging him. She forced herself to remain composed.

"Okay. Thank you." She said, giving a slight nod before turning again and starting for camp again. It wasn't even a promise, but the hope made her happy. Outrageously happy. She was even slightly annoyed with herself with how happy it made her.

Do I really not want to stay in Kelth that bad? She wondered, biting her lip to try and stop smiling.

Or perhaps you just want to stay with Gable that badly. Krae suggested, making Violet blush before scowling.

I don't like being with him! He's a pain in the a** and he doesn't even like me! I'm a burden to him, nothing more. Even if I did have feelings for him, he couldn't really feel the same about me. She shook her head.
