I want to write a poem about happiness, something more than over used cliches. I want it to actually mean something because I'll be giving it to my friend for her birthday. I'm not sure how to start or get to that place over creativity. HELP.

I would say a good metaphore or simile.  Maybe an inside joke? :) good luck and tell her Haily said happy birthday! :)

next time your really really happy, think of why and jot it down.
Like, when you see the word "happiness" obviously what pops to mind is sunshine slanting its rays through the just blossoming branches, as you lay basking in it's glow, your best friend beside you hudda hudda hudda....
but there are other things that make you happy- I could give you some, but I don't know if you want it to be more personal- like something with you and your friend...
anyways, just spent two paragraphs and helped you zilch. sorry, i tend to do that
