Snowflakes swirled down from the sky in an intricate dance, bobbing and weaving in and out of each other. Mina stuck out her tongue to catch one.
“Stop that.” A harsh voice snapped. Mina’s good mood melted like the snowflakes that fell around her and her older sister.
“Lighten up, Audra,” she teased. “If you don’t wipe that scowl off your face, it’ll stick there, and then no boy will ever want to kiss you.” She giggled at the thought of a boy trying to kiss her frowning sister.
“So be it,” came Audra’s grim reply. Always the optimist, that one. “Now, come along, Mina. We’re going to be late, and Mrs. Blackwell will punish us both for your dilly-dallying.”
Mina huffed, but relented, following her sister’s footsteps in the new fallen December snow. She, despite the warning, continued to catch the flurries that clung to her eyelashes and hair. She imagined that they were being drawn to her through a mysterious force, and that she was the Queen of Snow going to her ice fortress in the winter land of Nihael.
“Don’t you just love winter, Audrey?” She sighed dreamily.
“No.”
Mina fell silent.
Audra turned sharply right, to the entrance of the local library. For a place filled with such beauty and magic, it was rather dreary on the outside. The library was a plain, beige-colored building that was all edges and corners. Mina glanced back at the white streets that sparkled in a way that made them rarer than the rarest jewel. White streets, she mused, struck by the ring of it. Blue highway, red drive, purple parkway…
The two girls entered and shed their winter clothing. Mina imagined they were caterpillars, taking the final leap into blossoming into butterflies. Audra brushed the snow from her hair, and then did the same to Mina when she realized that Mina wouldn’t do it herself.
“Honestly,” she chided, “You’re going to get soaked through and catch hypothermia.”
Mina opened her mouth to reply, but was cut off by Mrs. Blackwell, “There you are, Audra. If you would please reshelf these books…”
“Of course, Mrs. Blackwell,” she replied with a courteous smile. Turning to Mina she added, “Just run along, and I’ll come by to collect you when I’m done.”
Mina, grateful, beamed at her sister and scurried off to the fiction section. Ever since the beginning of the summer, they had come to the library. Audra as a library’s aide for her volunteer hours, and Mina because she never turned down a library trip. She ran her fingers along the smooth spines of the books. Some were familiar titles—others were presents she had yet to unwrap. Each one a new adventure about pirates, or spaceships, or a fierce princess. They were her way out of this dreary life and the motions everyone went through. Audra couldn't see that, always complaining about her imagination, using the word as if it were a bad thing. Audra never understood what it was like to have all these wonderful thoughts swirling around in her head like the snowflakes. If only she could catch one of them on her tongue so easily...
A snatch of a poem entered her mind. Maybe it was one she had read somewhere. Maybe she just made it up. Maybe, maybe, maybe.
She hummed the poem as if it were a song. If the tune didn’t fit, she came up with her own, like she did everything else.
Making the sweet escape
Finding the forgotten worlds
Wearing the adventure like an old velvet cape
Being lost in the unspoken words

Congratuations to all of the winners!! You can choose whichever poem/story catches your interest. Some (okay most) of the stories are older pieces of mine, back from when I was a wee slip of a lass, so please be mindful of the horrible job I did of creating new paragraphs when someone new speaks. You'll find that is what is most commented on. Thanks and great job to everyone!

Once upon a time I hated you,
you told me it could never be true.
I said you've hurt me too deep to be healed
you said my inner feelings would weald.
now I have a message that you must hear:
know I’m not your ghost anymore
even if I’m the toy you love the most.
know that I don’t love you
you think the horror you created is a
forgotten world but I will always remember.
my feelings for you are cold as December.
I know that you're just using me.
Your words are meaningless
your actions are useless
I will never forgive you for what you have done.
I’m not the bag that lands your punches
I’m not the parachute that breaks your fall
I’m not yours, so give me up.
This letter is my sweet escape
but for I’m afraid it’s only hate.
If you still choose me so be it.

To close the windows to the soul To make a sweet escape Into the forgotten world of dreams Into a satisfying deep sleep Outside a harsh December snow reigns Outside the hatred of the world whirls about Inside the warmth glows Inside an enduring fire slowly burns So be it Sleep, the haven for cowards of reality So be it Sleep, a haven for all

Slowly traversing across a blue highway Slipping away from the city of greed The highway, a sweet escape from claustrophobia The relieving isolation in the car Just the radio, the car, and I Cradled in the car So be it Where will the highway take us?
