So. This thread is awesome! Ask me anything about writing and I will answer!
Why do I write the stories I do?
Because you like to write the stories you write and the stories need to be written. XD
Indigo, you have no idea what kind of stories I write, do you? *knowing look* You can;t fool me.
Not a clue. Or do I... *evil smile*
You write sci-fi. You've written at least one novel and several other shorter pieces. You also like to write poetry.
Aha! I've got you there! I don't write sci-fi, I've got a fantasy novel. Okay, I've been told that some of my descriptions come off as mechainical. Any ideas to help?
Hmm...let me find one in one of your pieces...Okay, so I read Dark Night 2, Part 1. You're right. Some of your descriptions are a little plain, predictable almost. Here's a tip: Don't use color names so often in that way. For instance:
Instead of just saying what color something was, or what it was, say something more stimulating than just plain 'red' and yellow'. Add other adjectives too, for instance:
Grimy mustard-colored bucket
Et cetera. Same with stuff like 'blond hair'. Try to make it more interesting. Say her hair is 'blond with light brown streaks that gleamed under the light of the cheap lightbulb overhead'.
But remember, all in moderation. You don't want too many killer descriptions, or you kill the piece. If you have too many, you'll start to sound like you're trying to quote Shakespeare.
Hope this helps.
It does! Thanks! P.S. I hate Shakepeare1 Idon't like all of the thees and thous and stuff.
I read one of his plays (Much Ado About Nothing), and it was pretty good. I guess it's an acquired taste. :)
I guess so. Do you like the most famous works of Sr Artuhor Conan Doyle?
The guy who invented Sherlock Holmes? Well, here's a secret: I've never read or watched anything Sherlock-related. I was a Nancy Drew girl when I was younger. :P
Good knowledge of English lititure.
I guess, yeah. It's not really my style...
So, are you going to do any writing this summer?
Loads! Also, I'm going to volunter at the local libbrary. Are you?
Nope, no library. :( I am volunteering with this group that teaches Bible clubs to kids in their backyards. Also, I'm going to summer camp, and the beach.
As for writing, yes. I don't have any specific plans, maybe just finishing up stuff I started in the school year and didn't have time to finish.
Sounds interesting. I hope you have fun.
Yeah, I hope so too!
Today I had to give a mini-speech at a breakfast for the volunteer thing. I had my speech all memorized and everything, but when I got up there I just started talking randomly, not following my speech at all. I hope it made sense. Not one of my finer moments. XD
No kidding. I know what you mean. :D
