Just thought I'd start off a discussion by quoting something I think very highly of:

If there is no God, then all that exists is time and chance acting on matter. If this is true then the difference between your thoughts and mine correspond to the difference between shaking up a bottle of Mountain Dew and a bottle of Dr. Pepper. You simply fizz atheistically and I fizz theistically. This means that you do not hold to atheism because it is true , but rather because of a series of chemical reactionsÂ… Â… Morality, tragedy, and sorrow are equally evanescent. They are all empty sensations created by the chemical reactions of the brain, in turn created by too much pizza the night before. If there is no God, then all abstractions are chemical epiphenomena, like swamp gas over fetid water. This means that we have no reason for assigning truth and falsity to the chemical fizz we call reasoning or right and wrong to the irrational reaction we call morality. If no God, mankind is a set of bi-pedal carbon units of mostly water. And nothing else.
~Douglas Wilson

You can take a stab at this however you want, approach it from different angles, post your own questions, I don't care. I mostly just thought this was interesting, and wanted to know what you guys thought.

Or post your own awesome-sauce quotes :P

This is kinda what I am trying to say in the Ship of Theseus thread.

Kinda because this is just a criticism, that's a refutation. Of sorts.

Cheers.

XD

I don't know. I was just feeling a bit contrarian. I mean it does suck a little bit. I crave universal meaning just as much as the next person, but it doesn't make logical sense.

Also, while I tend to believe in determinism, its not necessarily true.

And lastly, life isn't meaningless in such a world. Its just universally meaningless. We still feel emotions and have goals, hopes, fears, accomplishments, etc, etc. and those still matter - just not to the universe.

Read my Stephen Hawking quote again if you have to.

As inspiring as this quote may be at first glance, it's basically pure BS. The survival value of friendship is hugely immense. Immensely huge. Whatever. Basically, humans wouldn't be social animals if friendship didn't contribute substantially to survival. (see "game theory")

Sorry, I can't get the video to work, so I don't know if it answers this question or not.

Why do we need friendship in addition to fmaily ties? I assume the evolutikonary benefits you are referring to are derived from social behavior. But most animals that show social behavior rely on family ties- a pack of wolves consists of mostly of a breeding pair and their offspring. A herd of elephants is usually made up of several related adult females- mothers, daughters, aunts, sisters, cousins. Humans, on the other hand, don't just remain in close family groups, however. We also make friends with individuals who have no conceivable ties to us. Why is that?
