Can we be perfect?

"Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect."
(Matthew 5:48)

My question is pretty straight forward:

Is it possible for us to be perfect?

If so, how do we accomplish it?

When does it happen? (This life? The next?)

Also, does God expect us to be perfect?

And what do you consider perfection? (Not sinning? Not making any mistakes?)

I look forward to your thoughts and opinions.

God bless. ♥

I'll start with your 4th question: does God expect us to be perfect? Of course He does. This is the story of Creation, of what's happened since then--the Fall. His standard has always been perfection, that's why sin is so deadly and why even a little sin results in death. If the expectation He had of us was not perfection, He wouldn't hold us to it. And we find that He does.

Now: is it possible for us to be perfect? No, it is not. God tells us "for all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God." If it were possible for us to be perfect we wouldn't need a Savior, and Christ came for all (which is scriptural).

I consider perfection not sinning, yes. Hope this made sense :)

Let's just forget religion for a moment here (even though that's kinda the point here but whatever).

Perfection, in the dictionary is "conforming absolutely to the definition or description of the ideal type" this basically means, whatever the heck is ideal to you, that's perfect to you.

So is it possible to be perfect? Yup, if someone thinks how you are is their definition of "perfect". Like, if you think someone perfect is "blonde, blue-eyed, and pretty" the if you fufill those requirements, you are now perfect, at least to one person.

However, perfect is different for eveyone, so you can be both perfect and inperfect at the same time.

Now, does God expect us to be perfect? That is completely up to you. If you believe in God and think that is so, then sure, he wants you to be perfect. If you don't believe in God then, well, you don't believe in God and that is totally irrevelant. If you're like me, you think that no, he doesn't expect you to be perfect, he just expects you to try. He made all of us correct? Meaning he gave us our flaws. You don't give someone a flaw and then tell them to be perfect, that's just stupid.

That's my opinion, of course.

Mortally, it's not possible for us to be perfect, ever since the Fall. We're always tempted by sin and can never be truly perfect. Perfection would be not sinning and not making mistakes. I don't think that God expects us to be perfect. I think He wants us to try to the best of our abilities, but because of human nature, we are flawed and make mistakes.

I am dead to sin and alive in Christ.
Perfect? I still sin, but I am getting to be more like Christ. However, I've been made righteouss and blameless in the eyes of God. So, am I perfect?
...
...
Yes.

Hmmm, this is pretty much the response I was expecting.

Personally, I believe that through the power of Christ we can become perfect. In fact, I think it is necessary for us to vanquish our sins before we an get into heaven.
It should be our daily duty, goal, and struggle.

Anyways, just read these verses and think about it:

“He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still. And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.”
(Revelation 22:11-12)

"The LORD rewarded me according to my righteousness: according to the cleanness of my hands hath he recompensed me.
For I have kept the ways of the LORD, and have not wickedly departed from my God.
For all his judgments were before me: and as for his statutes, I did not depart from them.
I was also upright before him, and have kept myself from mine iniquity.
Therefore the LORD hath recompensed me according to my righteousness; according to my cleanness in his eye sight.
With the merciful thou wilt shew thyself merciful, and with the upright man thou wilt shew thyself upright.
With the pure thou wilt shew thyself pure; and with the froward thou wilt shew thyself unsavoury.
As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all them that trust in him.
For who is God, save the LORD? and who is a rock, save our God?
God is my strength and power: and he maketh my way perfect."
(2 Samuel 22:21-27, 31-33)

"Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect."

(Matthew 5:48)

God bless. ♥
