Hey everyone. So I just had a cool idea. You guys might not think its cool at all in which case we can just let this thread die, but I thought I'd throw this out here.
I've only been on this forum for about a week (I think), but I've really enjoyed the experience a lot. I've been exposed to a bunch of different perspectives and ideas and learned how to present my own ideas better. Everyone here is remarkably accepting of other peoples beliefs, pushing eachother, but rarely getting upset or hurtful. Anyway, being on Teen Ink, I also write fiction and dream of someday getting a book published. So I was thinking -why don't we (any one on the forum whos interested) write a book.
Yeah. I know its a big idea, but I thought it would be really cool and probably pretty popular with other thoughtful teens if we could put together some of our discussions into a polished book format and then try to get it published. I feel like a book written by teenagers for teenagers from lots of different backgrounds (Muslim, athiest, agnostic, various forms of Christianity, Jewish) coud be really neat. Basically I thought we could have a bunch of different sections each on some big topic (for example evolution, scientific thought, free will, etc., etc.). Everyone involved in the project would write an opinion piece on each topic highlighting their ideas. Then at the end of each section we'd include a little TI forum style discussion where we discuss the topic directly back and forth.
So. Anybody interested? Do you think such a book would sell? Would you be willing to put in the work? Or should we just ignore this thread?
I'm game XD and during the summer, especially, I'll be spending a lot of the time....doing nothing at all.
So yeah, lets write this mother! XD
That sounds pretty neat :) I dunno if I'd want my much-cherised anonymity out, but I know TheKing, Collin, and I have written ENORMOUS posts in the past (and others of course).
Let's see what others have to say :)
Also, so glad that you like it here! It's amazing how polite teens are. On other forums, all these adults are like freaking cutthroat.
Jade.I.Am: Yeah the summer would definitely be when I have time too. I'm glad you like the idea!
Destinee; In regards to anonymity we can see what others want to do, but I don't see why we can't write the thing under pseudonyms (aka our profile names) if we prefer. Let's see if anyone else is interested...
It's a great idea, but you must postpone it till summer holidays. Then all of us will be able to write massive entries. There must be separate chapterss on everything, and every chapter must voice opinion who cares to give it.
It's such a good idea, I wanna write now. But I'm out till exams.
Btw, I was also thinking of holding a philosophy contest in holidays. Guess I'd build up on that too.
We can do with our pseudonyms, like ya said.
Dynamo: Glad you like the idea. Summer holidays it is.
Everyone else: If anyone else is interested just post here. Also, if anbody wants to start listing possible sections/topics go right ahead.
quantum: i would love to participate in this. if you give me what i need to do before the summer, i can write then. i won't be on the computer during the summer so i could post my work in september when school starts again. i like that idea:)
everyone else: don't worry it won't be my close minded all muslims hate christians and J.ews:) i've figured out that was wrong:)
oh and if you're using screen names for the book just use packerbacker12:) kdog kind've gives my indentiy away to some people:)
packerbacker12: Sounds good. Hopefully we can define the topics in the next few weeks, so you should be good to go offline over the summer.
Everyone else: So that's five people. I think we should probably cap it at ten (although I'm not set in that) in order to keep chapters a manageable size and to allow readers to remember people. So if you're interested, don't hesitate.
Sounds cool. I'm in.
It may be difficult for me to have time to do it over the summer because I'm usually away, but hopefully I'll be able to fit it in.
God bless. ♥
Quantum, breece, halfnote, jade, collin and a certain guy i'vent really met, e.g. drbug, will come along. He.llish mobile......
That sounds fun. I'd like to participate. I agree that summer would be the best time for that.
Also, here are some topic suggestions:
- origin of the universe (creation vs. evolution)
- the afterlife
- Nature of Jesus (I know that us Christians have had some arguments about this with our Musilm friends)
- Nature of God (Is he part of the trinity? Is he a bodiless spirit? Is he even a he?)
- Moral code (What rules should we live by? What is sin? How do motives relate to actions?)
God bless. ♥
quantum: how many topics are you thinking?
also i have a few topics to add:
- Torah(first five books of the Bible) whether or not it was done away with.
- baptism, as a baby or when you're mature enough to know what you're doing? and how should baptism be done? going backward, forward or straight down?
- did Yahshua(Jesus) sin when he told the man to pick up his mat on the shabbat(sabbath)?
that's what i got:)
Y'-va-re-ch'-cha A-do-nai v'-yish-m'-re-cha;
ya-er A-do-nai pa-nav a-le-cha vi-chu-ne-ka;
yi-sa A-do-nai pa-nav a-le-cha.
may Yahweh bless you and keep you, may Yahweh make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you. Yahweh lift up his countenance and grant you peace.
In terms of number of topics I don't really have a set amount - depends how many good ones we think of (within limits of course)
half-life: All those look great. However origin of the universe should be creation vs. big bang. Then we could have a separate chapter only on evolution.
packerbacker12: Thos are good topics, but do you think you generalize them a little more. I'd like this to be pretty general in terms of the big topics so that way it is acessible to everyone (for example "the nature of God" and "the nature of Jesus" are about as specific as I'd like to get.) Of couse some of those smaller issues can be brought up within the overarching chapter topics. Perhaps a section about "the importance of specific rituals and variations in different interpretations of the Bible?" aka important ot not.
Of course, if other people want to get that specific I don't mind getting outvoted - I'd just like every chapter to be pertinent to just about everybody who wants to read the book, even if they aren't religious or don't follow one of the three big monotheistic religions. For example I didn't know at all about the last topic. Let me know what you think.
Here's a few more:
-Scientific vs. Religious Thought (the topic of one of my threads)
-Why or why not believe in a higher power? (another thread of mine)
-The nature of reality. How do you define it?
Through the minor lens: A Yeen Interpretation of Philosophy
Do ya like it.
