Collin:

Can't believe I was gone for so long and missed a debate with you :(

Oh well, maybe by some miracle you'll actually check this and respond.

On to business:

Your argument assumes that we need God because we are self aware and have the ability to make choices.

1) Prove it.  :P

2) Give me evidence that a virtuous Christian society would be any better than a P.agan or even ir.religious society.

3) Why does the "deity" have to be G.od?  It could the belief that doing bad things makes a rabid man eating turtle fall from the sky and kill our families and as long as we sincerely believed in it I doubt it would be inneffective.  If you're answer to this is "we should obey G.od because we love him", we can have morals because we love each other as well.  I wouldn't want something bad to happen to myself, "Treat others as you would have them treat you".  It's clean and simple, and despite the origins you can say it without mentioning G.od.

4)  Not to be a nitpicking little ----- but how do you know that humans are the only beings capable of making choices?  (I'm referring to your mentioning that my argument would be valid if humans were shrubs.)

Thanks!

I agree with Breece partially, at least on the front that humans may not be the only beings capable of making choices.

If by a God, you mean the one true God, then yes of course you need him because without God you wouldn't be here. Actually nothing would exist so yes you most definitely need God.
