What kind of a story is it? Where and when does it take place?

It's really hard to say without knowing the setting or the characters' personalities. You could look through a baby name book or phone book- that's what I sometimes use.

Go to behindthename . com
(but without the spaces, obviously); they have tons of great names, and what they mean, what language they come from, and all kinds of other fun naming things.

Try to choose a name that is fitting to the character. I try to name my characters using Latin roots that have a meaning that reflects an aspect of a character's personality and flows well with the story. If you give me a character I can come up with a name, but I'd need to know the character and a bit about him/her first.

I have always liked Maddie or Emily for girls. They are feminine, but simple. They lend themselves well to any personality. :)

Try modeling the characters after people in your life and pick similar names. FOr example, in my story "But For Now I'll Procrastinate" there is a very stern, even slightly cruel, character named Chris. The story mentions that he is American and used to work as an eighth grade math teacher. Therefore, it hints that I modeled him off of my current 8th grade homeroom teacher, who shares his first name, nationality, profession, and demeanor.
