Just in case someone doesn't know, cutting is when a person takes a sharp object and cuts their own skin and scratching is when some one does the same thing, except just with their own fingernails and it doesn't bleed immediately when you scratch unless you're picking a scab away.
What I want to know is, what is your take on cutting and scratching? Is it an addiction or is it simply a way to relieve stress. Does it really harm a person?

I think that people cut/scratch/hurt themselves in whatever way because they feel like something is their fault and are punishing themselves for it by causing themselves pain. What do you think?

I do agree with that to an extent. Eventually one may just do it because it gives them pleasure. It's a weird thing. Some do it because it looks pretty to them.

Yes I agree. Maybe some people do it because they want people to notice them and be concerned and ask what's wrong. Some people need that kind of attention and cant think of any other way to make people notice that there is something wrong.

Except I think it's important not to think that all of people who do it are like that, cause some of them get really mad when you think so. But do you think that it really harms someone, or is it something that hurts others more?

Very true. I don't think it's good to stereotype anyone. As for whether it's worse for the person doing it or worse for others, I think it depends on how deeply you want to think about it. On the surface it seems that it would obviously be worse for the person doing it because they are the one getting hurt. But if you go a little deeper, I think it is worse for the friends of the person doing it because while they have the person's best interests in mind while they try to get the person to stop cutting or scratching, the person doing the cutting or scratching may not feel the same way and may think their friend is interfering when they're actually just trying to help. Do you agree?

I do agree that it is worse for other people, but I'm not so sure about the reason. I mean, it's true that they may think that way and get bothered by it, but it's a little...different. I mean...this is hard to explain...but like, some other people who cut or scratch are really depressed, a lot of them actually. So I think that because of that, it would hurt other people worse since the person who is doing it to themselves is rarely capable of much emotion. I think that even though the pain is physical, the mental pain is more likely to already have been there anyway, and the physical pain is hardly there compared. The worst thing, I've heard, for some cutter/scratchers is just hearing the tone from someone they love when they are trying to get them to stop. And it's horrible, because a lot of times it's a lot more complected than saying "just stop" and they stop.

I must admit, I have done the scratching thing before. Mostly, I just did it because I was angry at everything, and the only way I could get my anger out was by hurting myself. I also bit my self. I don't do it anymore.

Did you bit until you bled? Just curious, you don't have to answer if you don't want to.

Sometimes people cut themselves to show themselves that pain does heal, pain does go away...but when you end up with scars, that's not always the case...

Maybe they want the scars; a reminder of the bad things that made them cut or scratch or whatever. Just an idea...

No, I never drew blood. Nothing worse than red indents.

Iamme11, that's true, too, about the scars...

Even if the scars stay, they could be a reminder that they once got through the pain. Inspiration for future notice that anything is able to be overcome.

Randomscreenname: Okay thanks for quenching my curiosity. Once I bit my thumb really hard cause I was super nervous about something and it bled through the pores, it was so weird.

Yeah, but a constant reminder of that pain isn't always good. It is inspiration that things can heal, but to have a permanent scar that the person caused themselves on purpose...it's a reminder of that unignored weakness or that moment of healed pain, and depending on which way they look at it, the scar can either be good or bad. For most, i think its bad.

It's a reminder that they were hurt enough to inflict purposeful pain on themselves, and that healed scar can always be opened up again, since it already happened once.

That's true. I guess it's simply a matter of, once you've fallen into that hole of cutting or scratching or in any way causing yourself pain on purpose, it's hard to get back out completely.

yeah, extremely hard....until your best friend starts saying things like "if you cut yourself again, i'll take a knife to my wrist." Then if you really care about that friend...

That's true too. But I've heard of people saying that and then just cutting somewhere else on themselves. I mean, it's not too hard to hide something so few people want to talk about.
