I'm a Christian. I wanna have a civil discussion with somebody of another religion or an atheist/agnostic. i wanna hear the reasons you believe what you do. nothing against other Christians, but i want to hear from people of other religions bcuz i already know about mine lol.
I'll have a discussion with you. I'm atheist.
arlight, like i said i dont want it to turn into an argument, just a discussion. so why are you an atheist?
That's okay; I'm not one of those 'angry atheists.' So, why am I an atheist? Well, I grew up in a non-religious family. Our school has an 'optional' religion class you can take, but my parents wouldn't let me, so I felt left out when all my other classmates went. I got over this eventually and in the fifth grade, I actually read the Bible. Since then, I've studied a lot of religions extensively and none of them seem to give me the answers I seek. For me, there is no reason to believe in God.
your school has a religion course? thats different. but cool. why wouldnt your parents let you? this is actually the first time someone has given me a logical reason to be an atheist. however i have been given many many reason to believe if youd be interested
My school is in Canada. It's supposed to be a public school, but since I live in rural Canada, the dominant religion is shoved down everyone else's throats. My parents wouldn't let me because I was in grade one and they didn't want me to be pressured into religion. Their reasoning was that if I wanted to follow a religion, I should discover it on my own. So why do you believe in God?
well that makes sense, i went to a Lutheran elementary school where they shoved it down my throat and i nevver believed it til i went to a youth group and they taught it to me in a way that actually made sense. ever since then ive seen God preform miracles in my life and ive encountered demons. most people wont believe me but ik what i saw. so thats one of the reasons i believe. i also believe in creation and not evolution bcuz ive been to a lot of seminars on it and i actually understand the reasons behind it, plus, carbon dating has been proven wrong. and if evolution cant be real (bcuz of carbon dating) then i would have to believe in creation, and all the reasons behind it make a lot of sense. oh and the grand canyon has been proved by creation scientists to have been made by the flood, and Pangaea, can also be explained by creation. i could go on and on about this topic lol
So you believe the Earth is only six thousand years old?
yea i do, w/o carbon dating, everything can be dated in 6,000 years.
I disagree with your assertion that carbon dating is bogus, but I respect it. I'm atheist, but I really don't see anything wrong with people believing in God.
well there have been experiments done to disprove it, for instance a pumpkin was buried for 5 years, it was dug up then given to some carbon dating scientists to date it. the man who submitted the 5 year old pumpkin knew how old it actually was, but the scientists dated it as 1 million years old. ( i might be wrong on the numbers and if it was actually a pumpkin or something else but ik for a fact the experiment happened ) i realize i sound really assertive right now and im sorry im just trying to prove my point. however i am not trying to disrespect you or your beliefs. i actually know a lot of christians that believe the world is millions of years old though. i dont believe that the age of the world is relevant though. to be a christian you have to believe that Jesus Christ was born and lived a perfect life then died for our sins, and then to live for him.
So you say Jesus Christ was born and 'lived a perfect life'. Do you believe ordinary people can live a perfect, sin-free life?
i dont, i believe that Jesus/god wants us to try. i wish it were possible but thats the reasons Jesus died for us. to forgive us for every sin we have and will commit
Fair enough. Do you have any more questions for me?
well i have a comment. i dont understand why atheists (like you, not Jesus haters lol) why dont people just believe? i mean i understand believing in another religion, but even if Christianity was completely made up, what would be the harm in believing? If we're wrong about God, then when we die, nothing would happen. But if we're right, then Christians would go to heaven and anyone that didnt believe would go to he.ll. (im not saying youre going to he.ll so please dont take offense) but idk i guess what im saying is whats the harm?
What you're talking about is called Pascal's Wager. And there are several problems with it. 1. Hypothetically speaking, what if the one true God is not the Christian God and I offended Him/Her/It by worshiping a false God? 2. You cannot force yourself to believe in something. If I were to accept that the Christian God really is there and is the one true God, would acceptance really include true belief? I would always have doubts and I would be living a lie, would I not?
ive never heard of Pascal's Wager. and honestly ive considered the existence of another God, ive decided that bcuz ive learned so much about my God that it makes too much sense to believe anything else. however i 100% understand your 2nd reasoning (and your 1st too =P). i only have one thing to say about the 2nd part, acceptance *could* lead to belief, but only if you gave it a chance, which i guess is waht i was trying to say, why it isnt worth giving a chance. but i completely respect your opinions=)
Why isn't believing in God worth a chance? Well, there are many reasons. 1. God allows sickness, death, chaos and destruction. If He is all-powerful, why would he allow this? As 'punishment for our sins'? That's like a father beating his child for making a few little mistakes or not even doing anything.
2. Again, the Christian God may not be the true God (if there is one, which I don't believe there is). This means that my punishment for believing in a 'false God' in the afterlife could be far worse than not believing at all, could it not?
It's Satin that allows all of those things, i believe that God prevents those things from happening if you commit to him. and with your second point, im not quite sure how to respond, yes, but the wa you worded it make God sound like a horrible being, in that area i am not completely certain on how it all works, i may know a lot about my religion, but im not an expert/=
You believe Satan is responsible for all evil? Well, God has allowed Satan to exist, has he not? What I'm trying to is that if God is allowing Satan to exist, thereby allowing evil to exist, why does he deserve worship? My grandmother was a very, very pious woman, yet evil happened in her life. She gave birth to a stillborn child, her husband beat her, etc. So even though she went to church every Sunday, prayed every night and read the Bible, evil still happened to her. Either God is not omnipotent or he does not care. If either of these is true, then even if I believed there was a God, I would not worship Him.
