2 reported at the finish line of the Boston Marathon, 1 reported at the JFK library 5 miles away. Estimated 49-51 injured and 2 confirmed dead.

The first 2 bombs were less than 100 yards apart.

*sigh* My condolences to the victims and their families.

Right now if the bomber came up to me, I'd regret it later, but Id buy him a one way ticket out of the U.S. to somewhere with no extradition policy with America.

The whole thing is fishy to me. I was a few blocks away on Comm ave, and the explosions were, well, explosive. It was chaos, people trying to get away from Boylston, looking for their family and friends. By the time it had cleared a bit, I managed to get a closer look. The problem was, although the bombs were clearly pipe bombs, the explosion wasn't all that big considering when I saw them on the internet an hour ago. I know my explosives, and I know that the bomber didn't intend to take a lot of lives. It seemed like more of a statement then an act of terror. Bomb making materials are expensive, unless you make them yourself. The bombs were likely an organic compound, there was a lot of smoke, more smoke then kick, so I think he could've used animal fat instead of alcohol, or maybe animal blood as the primer. A terrorist's priority is to make a statement, killing people just comes with the job, but the bomber almost seemed like they didn't know what they were doing. A simple pipe bomb with a timer? That's child's play. Assuming the bomber was some whackjob with a manifesto, he would want to kill as many people as possible. He would place thermo bombs inside the buildings, and an incendiary stationed directly by the finish line. He wouldn't use pipe bombs either, he would trigger it manually from afar. This whole thing is just fishy to me. I smell a conspiracy...

Sorla, wether it is fishy or not 2 people still died. HAve some sympathy. As for Bombs I doubt you know more than my uncle who is MArine EOD. As for getting close, I'm pretty sure knowing how fast the police reacted after the initial shock, that you wouldn't have been able to get close to the site.

And clearly you can't see what type of bombs they were. I could make a bomb like that without using a pipe. In fact an anti-tank mine when stepped on could do that much damage.

Its kinda hard also to place a bomb in or near the street where there are police walking about. As for in a building, there is no reason. the MArathon is on the street. Besides maybe the bomber got what he wanted. Wide spread panic. Thousands of racers near the finish line. Not at the start or in the middle.

I wasn't being cruel, I'm just saying that the whole thing doesn't make any sense logically. Who makes a poorly planned terrorist attack? I'm sure your uncle knows a lot about bombs as well. American armed forces love improvised explosives for good reason, they are incredibly versatile. There is a bomb for everything. I didn't assume this was gonna be a sympathy thread, as it is in the news and issues section. I'm just saying that the bomber could've made a blood bath, so why did he choose to make a few pipe bombs? By closer look, I meant that I managed to get to Boylston street and see the scene. I got about thirty feet or so away from the finish line after the initial shock wore down, not much closer, because everyone was running against me. They didn't really try and get the civilians away right at first. They were more concerned with the injured and trying to find other threats. Civilians helped tend to the injured, but I avoided the ambulances and the medical tent, I just went home. Call it morbid curiosity why I didn't go right home. The smoke was incredibly thick, and people were running into each other, getting trampled at first. Luckily I missed the majority of the chaos. I think the worst part was how the families of the victims from Sandy Hook were there at the finish line.

Of course you can't see what bombs they were, the whole thing blew, silly. They know it's a pipe bomb because of the other devices they found. Maybe its the Winterhill in me, but those bombs were small. The blast radius was tiny considering. I'm actually surprised only two people were killed. The man left a back pack, that's how he managed to get past cops. He is technically a civilian after all. Putting a bomb in a building, if it's large enough, would collapse the whole thing. Incendiaries always look bigger then they are. Talk about a statement. It really makes me wonder what the motive was.

It is Patriot's Day in Boston, hence the marathon. Commemorating the Batlle of Lexington and Concord. President Obama told the Mayor and Governor that they have the full backing and resources of the Federal Government. And that the Americans are not to start rumors as we still don't have all the facts straight. Already my friends are saying its AlQuieda. Al-who?

On the Side note, Westboro Baptist Church is back out blabbing about how the whole thing was good and what not

It seems like a one man job, but I doubt it's terrorists. Just some lunatic with a manifesto. I guess we'll find out in a few days, if the feds decide to let us know at all. The most confusing thing about it is still the motive. It's really tearing me up, I just don't see the logical point. Every criminal has a reason for committing crime. What was the bomber's reason?

The fact that the Sandy Hook families were there is almost unspeakably tragic.

The more detached half of me is wondering why nobody has claimed responsibility yet. If it was a terrorist attack they'd be leaping all over each other to claim it was thier bomb. If it was a political statement, the statement hasn't been made.

Exactly! This isn't terrorism. One of my friends has a theory that it's all a distraction for a crime. He's comparing it to this bank robbery in Charlestown back in the sixties (for about fifteen minutes and still counting...), where a bomb was set off on the other end of town to gather all the law enforcement there while they robbed a bank. Crazy theory, but hey, every new idea is considered crazy at first.

But it makes you think, when all the Emergency workers are there, a Fire explodes at JFK Presidential Library. So that comes into Perspective. But now reports say 110+ injured 2 Dead. Among the casualties there were 8 children, one of whom was a 3 year old.

It is still terrorism by default.

Dictionary.com definition of Terrorism

noun
1.

the use of violence and threats to intimidate or coerce, especially for political purposes.

So, yes it is still terrorism. In fact, the bomber will never take credit for it. I always love those who wether they do good or bad they never take credit for it. Those are the people we should be afraid of. In the end, they are just like one of us.

Death toll is now at 3 people. They also found two more bombs unexploded. One was in a hotel, another is in a disclosed location. And at least 10 people had to have amputations.

Well Sorla, looks like you may have been mistaken somewhat...
They just announced that it was a kitchen cooker filled with wires, and ball bearings and nails, so  as to increase the damage radius. It seems as though they really were trying to cause as much pain as possible...

It's a variation of a pipe bomb, the containment means that low order explosives can have a bigger blast radius. I guess that explains why there was so much smoke, he probably used black powder. Thank god the bomber was an amateur, I just keep thinking about it over and over again. The blood. I wish I had gone straight home, I wish I never saw Boylston street. I'll never be able to get this one image out of my head of limbs and this man standing over his girl friend trying to stop the bleeding. Most people were running, those that weren't affected by the bomb, and they left the rest to lay there bleeding out. I had to burn my shoes. I dunno, I've seen people with fatal injuries before, but for some reason this is a whole lot worse. Not many of us slept last night, that's for sure.
