Favorite Quote:
"Soon madness has worn you down. It’s easier to do what it says than argue. In this way, it takes over your mind. You no longer know where it ends and you begin. You believe anything it says. You do what it tells you, no matter how extreme or absurd. If it says you’re worthless, you agree. You plead for it to stop. You promise to behave. You are on your knees before it, and it laughs."
— Marya Hornbacher

My heart pounds as the fragmented light dances across the room. The air around me is thick with smoke and doubt. How did this happen? How did I let things get to this point? The sun shines through the skylight above me, placing me under it’s spotlight. My misery’s a play and it seems I am the lead.

Tiny beads of sweat gather along my hairline. This isn’t me. I'm not supposed to be the center of attention, not supposed to be seen. I should be invisible, a hazy figure in the shadows. I should not be here- not like this. But I guess there are a lot of things happening today that shouldn’t have. There’s nothing I can do about it anymore though. It’s too late. I keep running. Sounds of footsteps follow me through the corridor.

They’re gaining on me.

My eyesight blurs and I stumble, losing my balance and falling to the floor. I stand up shakily and, as my eyes readjust, I look around to see several pale hands pointing at me accusingly.

“Okay, okay. It was me.” I say, before it all goes dark.

This was written in my creative writing class for a prompt where we were asked to write 500 words or less in response to a photo the teacher put on the board. The picture showed a hole in a ceiling, with sunlight shining into an otherwise dark room.
