Playback

“Hey, this is Danae Neill. Sorry I can’t come to the phone right now! Leave a message and I’ll be sure to get back to you!”

Playback: “Hey” [car honking] “it’s me. I missed you today. Call me back when you get the chance?”

Playback: “It’s Grant again. Did your meeting get rescheduled? You told me you’d be back from Madrid two nights ago in the last email. Call me. Love you, Danae.”

Playback: “You must be asleep. I get it. Jet lag sucks. I was just calling to tell you I miss you and love you and can’t wait to see you Friday. Call me, babe.”

Playback: “Hey, me again. I was calling to see if I could stop by your apartment. I left some books there that I have to get back by Thursday, so it can’t wait until after our date. Please call me back. Love you.”

Playback: “Hi, I just dropped by the apartment” [couple arguing in the background]. “It doesn’t look like you’ve been there since you left for Madrid. You haven’t answered any of my emails either. You avoiding me” [laughs] “I left the key under the mat like you always say to. I miss hearing your voice! Love you. Call me.”

Playback: “It’s me again. I’m just calling to see if we’re still on for tonight. I’ll be outside the Chinese place at seven. Meet you there?”

Playback: “Hi, it’s Grant. It’s like, eight thirty. Should I keep waiting or are you not coming? Please call me back, okay?”

Playback: “Sorry, it sounded like I was mad in that last one. It’s nine thirty now. You could’ve at least called to say you weren’t coming. I really miss you. Could you come over tomorrow? We could watch a movie, have some wine; I’ll even make dinner- that pasta you really love. Please call me. I love you.”

Playback: “Sorry if this wakes you… I couldn’t sleep.” [Loud crash] “Whoa! I think a bat or something hit the window, so I’m gonna go look outside. Night, babe.”

Playback: “I’m at your apartment right now. I’m starting to get really nervous. You mind calling me? Please? Are you still in Madrid? Cause it doesn’t look like your stuff is back, and all the food in the fridge is spoiled. Please call me. I’m worried.”

Playback: “Hello, this is Jason. I’m calling to ask if you got my email about the airline. I’d hate for your flight information to have been caught up in that. Call me once you’re back!”

Playback: “It’s Grant. Are you with another guy? Did you meet someone in Madrid? Do you not care about me enough to tell me that you aren’t here, or that you’re with someone else, or that you haven’t come back? I’m worried sick” [door slamming] “Please, Danae! Call me back!”

Playback: “I called your sister today. When I asked if she knew where you were, she started crying. What the hell is going on?”

Playback: “Can we meet tonight? We really need to talk. I’ll be waiting at the swings at six. I really hope you come.”

Playback: “Hey, it’s Grant again. I’m at the swings. I hope to see you soon” [wind picking up]

Playback: “The weather was getting pretty bad, so I understand why you didn’t come” [teeth chattering] “I’m walking home now. Could you please call me back? I really want to see you soon. I love you.”

Playback: “Hi. It’s morning, and it’s been days since I’ve heard from you. Please call me,” [toilet flushing]

Playback: “Hey Danae! It’s Ann! We’ve got to go grab lunch sometime next week! Call me!”

Playback: “Danae, we really need to talk. Please call me back before tomorrow. Grant.”

Playback: “Why won’t you call me back? I miss you so much. I have something I need to ask you and show you, but if you don’t answer, I’ll never get the chance! Please, please, PLEASE call me!”

Playback: “Baby, if you don’t call me back, we’re through. Done. I’m tired of you not calling me. C’mon. It’s getting childish. If you don’t call me back by Friday night, consider yourself dumped.”

Playback: “I’m so sorry, Danae. I didn’t mean that! I love you so much. Not talking to you is driving me crazy. Please call me back. I love you!”

Playback: “You’re sister called me. She apologized for crying last time. How come you never told me you two got into a big fight before you left? She says she hasn’t heard from you since last month! It’s been almost a week. How long is it going to take for you to call me? And call your sister. She’s a little nervous, too. She says your doctor called. That you missed your last appointment? That’s not the only appointment you’ve missed recently… I really need to get in contact with you. There’s something I have to say.”

Playback: “Hi, it’s Jessie. Remember me, little sis? I wanted to apologize. You were right about my boyfriend Thomas. He’s a dirty liar and cheat! I kicked him out and am now with Kyle. You were right about him too. Call me back when you get the chance! We haven’t talked in forever. Love you, Danae.”

Playback: “Hi. It’s Grant again. I’m gonna walk over to your apartment tonight. If you aren’t there, then I’ll wait around. I really need to talk to you.”

Playback: “It’s me again. I’m walking over right now. Traffic is crazy! I’m glad we don’t live too far apart. Ah, Chicago. Just in case you are there, and are avoiding me for whatever reason, I’m going to let you in on a little secret- why I’m in such a hurry to see you,” [car honking] Well, there’s something burning a hole” [clapping] “in my pocket. No thank you, sir. Sorry, someone’s trying to sell me a hot dog again,” [laughing] “Anyways, it’s inside a tiny, black, felt covered box, from the Jared Diamond store. Danae Margaret Neill, I love you. Will you be mine forev-“ [car honks; screeching tires; crash; another crash; women and men screaming, calling for help; sirens] [beep].

“Hey, it’s Grant Bussey. Sorry I can’t come to the phone right now. You know what to do,” [beep]

Playback: “Hi, Grant. It’s Danae. I’m so sorry I kept you worried like that. My flight was delayed, like, a week, because of bad weather, and my internet connection was cut off because of some huge scandal with the hotel or whatever. None of the phones I tried would work either. I tried sending a letter, but it probably didn’t get to you because of the s**** weather. I really miss you. Can we meet at the swings tonight? Love you!”

Playback: “Hi, it’s me again. You didn’t show at the swings. I guess you have a right to be mad. Call me back? Oh, wait, did you hear about the big car accident last night? They can’t even identify the guy that was hit; it’s that bad. He wasn’t carrying a wallet or anything- just a ring in his coat pocket. That’s so sad. He was probably on his was to propose or something. Well, call me back. I miss you.”
