Phillip was shaking from head to toe. Old Man Gordon’s ancient face was looking at him with sadness.

“I’m sorry.” he said.

“How did you know?” asked Phillip asked.

“The same way your father did,” Phillip’s mouth dropped open “your father was a member in a group that studied the gods.”

“He was a merchant.” said Phillip angrily.

“No,” replied Gordon “he was an adventurer.” Somehow Phillip could tell Gordon was telling the truth, it did add up. He realized that his father must have died on an adventure. It was impossible to drown in the still waters of the Ringwater River.

“Phillip,” said Gordon “you have to leave Old Water along with your friends.”

“Where will we go.” asked Phillip.

“Follow the trail out of Old Water across the Chestnut River. Once across keep following the trail pass the ruined city of Stone Way and through the Plains of Sanctium to the woods of Chrysanthius the high elf”

“How will I know where to go.” asked Phillip quietly.

“The book is your guide,” said Gordon “it will tell you where to go.” All of a sudden a loud bang echoed throughout the basement. “Go upstairs!” yelled Gordon. Phillip ran up the stairs.

“What’s going on?” yelled Collin.

“No time to explain. Come here,” said Gordon “take these and put them on.” he threw a set of silver chain mail to Phillip, Darius, Collin, and Rider. Phillip took off his rusty chain mail and put the silver one on under his vest. Gordon also handed Darius a new bow and a set of elven arrows and an elven katana, Collin a huge doubled sided axe, and Rider his staff. “Go now!” yelled Gordon. The four of them ran out of the house. What they saw outside shocked them. Houses were on fire and bodies were lying in the street. The worst thing was that goblins were swarming Old Water.

“Watch out!” yelled a voice behind them. Phillip looked turned around and saw guards reading their bows to fire at the horde of goblins.

“This way!” yelled Phillip as he ran towards the gates. At the gates twenty guards fought against a swarm of goblins. Blood was being spilt on the brown dusty ground. The wooden gate was broken down. The four of them ran through the gate fighting their way through the goblins. After three minutes they came to the entrance to the forest. After another thirty minutes of nonstop running they made it to a clearing in the forest.

Collin sank to his knees. Rider, Darius, and Phillip just stood still looking up at the red horizon. How could this happen? His home was destroyed and his mother, he didn’t want to think about his mother.

“Phillip,” Darius began to speak “we have to get you out of here.”

“You still want to help me?” asked Phillip. The other three nodded.

“It wasn’t your fault.” said Collin.

“What did Old Man Gordon tell you to do?” asked Darius.

“Cross the Chestnut River.” replied Phillip.

“Alright the bridge is only six miles from here.” said Collin.

“What are we going to do about food.” asked Darius.

“There’s an inn by two miles from the Chestnut River.” said Collin. Something else came to Phillip’s mind.

“Rider,” Phillip asked his hooded friend “what are you.”

“Gordon said a wizard,” answered Rider “that’s why he gave me his staff.”

“Well that’s great,” said Collin suddenly “we have a half elf, a wizard, and a chosen.”

“I don’t want to be a chosen.” said Phillip. Collin didn’t reply. No one did, they just kept walking. The forest was dark and sinister and it was even more sinister because Phillip knew that they were being followed.

“Is it dark to you three?” said Darius out of nowhere.

“Yes.” said Phillip, Collin, and Rider together.

“I can see,” Darius said “can you.”

“Not really.” said Phillip.

“I can,” replied Darius “everything is clear.”

“Elves can see in the dark.” said Rider.

“But I’m not a full elf,” said Darius with a puzzled expression on his face “I never could see in the dark.

“I don’t know then.” said Rider gruffly. Phillip new that standing here was not going to solve anything. They had to leave Old Water quickly and find the Elves. Phillip remembered the book Gordon gave him. The Guide of the Chosen he thought. All of a sudden gust of wind came through the trees and with the gust of wind Phillip heard the faintest whisper. “Use the book.” He looked down at the ground and saw that book had fallen from the pack he was carrying. It had opened up showing a page that had a beautifully drawn map on it. The map shown an area that he immediately knew was Old Water. Phillip reached down and grabbed the book and looked at the map.

The map had everything that you would expect a map to have on it. There was the usual legend and compass rose, but there was something else on it. Written in what looked like red ink was, you are here. Phillip realized that the book somehow was showing where he was. Suddenly Phillip had an urge to ask the book to show him where exactly the inn Collin had mentioned before was.

“Show me the inn.” the way Phillip said this almost sounded like a question. Suddenly as if some cartographer was adding onto the map a sketch began to make way into existence. Immediately Phillip could tell that book had provided him the location of the inn that he was looking for. Underneath the sketch of the inn were the words, SCREECHING RAT. Using the scale on the map Phillip could see that the inn was exactly two miles away, just like Collin had said before.

When he finally looked up from the book he saw that everyone else was staring at him with puzzled looks on their faces. Phillip spoke to them, “I know that past few hours have been the roughest, most challenging hours in our entire lives. You do not how much it means to me that you all are sticking with me even though I know that your lives are in danger just because you are with me. I know you are all tired and weary, but just like Collin said before there is an Inn just two miles away. We need to make one final push through the forest and I need to know, are you with me?” There was silence for a second and then Darius stepped forward followed by Collin and Rider. Phillip knew they were with him.
