History in the Making
“Right then and there she saw, a castle faintly drifting in and out of her vision. All you could see was fog across from the moat…”
“Wake up Mrs. Bender we have a lesson going on right now.” her history teacher boomed.
Ali Bender awoke suddenly to find every 8th grader in her class staring at her. It was the weirdest dream she had ever had, but then again she loved fairytales. The bell rang and students shoved their way through the halls, overcome with joy that they were minutes away from going home for the weekend. Her mother died when she was a little girl, so it was just her and her dad tonight. Like every other night with her dad, he had takeout steaming and on the counter when she got home. It was a different type of father-daughter relationship; he never really knew how to be a father he was just there. Ali stepped into the kitchen and out of the corner of her eye; she saw a shadow lurking on the wall. She followed it quickly only to find that nothing was there. Ali ignored it and continued on with her homework. That night things seemed to only get stranger…
“She saw a creature, not one but many as well as a king standing before her, she wanted to run but she was trapped in the building. Guards were coming and were holding spears and swords above her so she screamed and…”
Ali suddenly awoke with her father staring at her, with a cold sweat dripping down her face. She was breathing hard and felt drained of energy. She realized that she had been screaming because her throat was dry and raspy. Ali sat up in bed trying to organize her thoughts and then shooed her dad away to go back to bed. “Why am I having all of these strange dreams.” she thought. Ali finally fell back to sleep only to be woken by her alarm. She got out of bed slowly, thanking the lord that it was a Saturday. The sun was shining and the smell of McDonalds pancakes wafted in from the kitchen.
“Good morning dad.” Ali said wolfing down some pancakes.
“Morning sweetheart, is everything alright? You were pretty terrified last night and the screams! They sounded dreadful!” her father said concerned.
“I don’t know the dreams just seemed so real.” she said mystified.
Ali finished up her breakfast and was reading in her room. She had the house to herself because her dad had to work today. Then suddenly she heard a door start to creak, it was coming from her closet! She got up off of her bed and tiptoed slowly towards the closet. Ali placed her hand on the knob and turned it slowly, feeling the clammy metal as it twisted in her hand. When she opened the door she saw a castle and a dragon. It looked like she went into another world. She stepped inside the other realm and was enchanted at what she saw. The castle was so grand and it looked so familiar. Ali took a few steps towards the castle and the guards spotted her. They ran at her screaming and yelling with their swords in their sheaths. Ali turned and ran but was soon captured. “If I actually ran in gym I might’ve been able to get away.” she thought angrily. The strange beings grabbed her and pulled her inside the castle and put her behind bars. She sat down and tried to regain her thoughts, she was in jail and in another world, she must be dreaming. Time seemed to drift by quickly because all Ali remembered was waking up with a stranger staring at her, with a crown on his head and a long beard that cascaded down to his chest.
“What is your name young lady?” the man said.
“Ali Bender. Who are you? Where am I?” Ali asked confused.
“What is up with people asking so many questions today? You are in my palace in Camelot.” He said nonchalantly.
“Camelot?! You mean the place we study about with King Arthur and and….” Ali said out of breathe all of the sudden.
“Yes, I am King Arthur and you are my long lost granddaughter.” he said with a smile on his weathered face.
“Your granddaughter!?” she said speechless.
“Indeed which means you are the princess of Camelot.” the king said proudly.
“I can’t be, I have parents, school, a life and it’s not here.” she said exhausted.
“No you are my granddaughter. Let me explain the whole story. You see when you were born there was a terrible war going on in Camelot as well as the plague. Thousands died but your escaped New Jersey and came to live here so we were safe in quarantine, but because you were an infant you were too vulnerable to keep here. So, you were left with your father, thinking your mother was in a terrible car accident. We never heard from you until yesterday, you were communicating with us through your dreams. You see, you can tell the future through your dreams and we can see what is going on. That is why the portal opened for you and I know what you are thinking, but this is not a dream.” her grandfather finished with a smile and a jolly laugh.
Ali sat there dumbfounded on the cold, palace, floor thinking and waiting for something to fall on her head to wake her up. Then she reconsidered and thought “What the hey.” She followed the king aka (her grandfather) into a grand room, with high ceilings, a window seat and a four poster bed with elegant curtains cascading to the floor. She gasped when her grandfather said it was indeed her bedroom. Ali opened her closet and luxurious gowns and ballroom dresses hung as if calling her name, begging her to wear the smooth, silky fabric. This whole excursion seemed too good to be true.
“Grandfather, I don’t think I can stay here. What about my family, they need me?” Ali said pausing.
“Darling, you need to stay here and fulfill your duties here as princess and in the future, queen.” he said calmly.
“What will I do about my other parents and school?” she said.
“We can teach you everything you need to know, from English, to French and even Shakespearean.” he said with a hint of annoyance.
“And what about my parents, they aren’t just going to disappear.” Ali said upset at the thought of losing her parents.
“Well I never told you this but your mother isn’t dead.” her grandfather said solemnly.
“What are you talking about?” Ali said urgently.
“She is living here as the queen of Camelot. You see, we had to make everyone think she was dead so she could live here and rule without anyone suspecting anything.” he said staring off out of the palace window.
“My mother is alive?” she said astounded.
“Why of course, she is! We will have to pretend that you are dead when you come and rule as princess.” he finished.
“Wait! I don’t understand why I have to do that to my dad? Why can’t mom go back and see him and more importantly me!” she said almost in tears.
“In this world you can’t constantly go back and forth, it is against the rules and it has been this way for hundreds of years. Your mother had to make the choice whether to come here or stay you with and your father.” he said.
“You are the king, can’t you change the rules!” she said.
“Things don’t work that way.” he said as he walked slowly out of her room and into the dining hall.
Ali sat there motionless on her bed, the tears starting to come. Before she could think her, mother walked into her room, looking as beautiful as she remembered, with her tiara made of diamonds and her dress that sparkled like light. She sat down at the foot of her bed and stared for about a minute before giving her a hug. They talked for about an hour or two, they both lost count. Her mother advised her to stay there with them, but Ali didn’t know, she couldn’t just abandon her father. What would he think when all of the sudden his daughter doesn’t come home and is then pronounced dead? It wouldn’t go over very well. She went to bed that night with nothing to eat giving her more time to think. Ali had a very restless sleep even though her bed was built like a cloud. She tossed and turned, before she knew it, the sun was shining brightly through her curtains. Ali got out of bed and tiptoed out into the hallway. As she made her way to the kitchen, she saw her grandfather and mother already seated at end of the table, eating breakfast.
“Good morning sweetheart.” her mother said with a half cheerful, half sadness in her voice.
“Good morning.” she said in return with no enthusiasm what so ever.
Ali took a seat and started to eat slowly, with a glum look on her face. Ali got up slowly waiting for someone to break the silence, but when no sound was made she excused herself and made her way to her room to get dressed. She pulled on her blue silk dress embroidered with gold and jewels. Ali placed her crown on the top of her head and walked down the great hall, only to see her mother and grandfather smiling proudly in front of her. Her mother had tears in her eyes as she lovingly embraced her. Ali hugged her back and proceeded out the great, oak doors. She was heading out to the garden; well no she wanted them to think she was going to the garden. She snuck around the corner making sure no one was around. “How do I do this again? I need a portal, but I don’t know how to summon my… magic!” Then an idea came to her, she closed her eyes and let her mind drift away to where she wanted to go, then she opened her eyes and to her amazement she was sitting in her bedroom, still dressed in her pajamas. Ali ran into the hallway, to see her father sitting at the kitchen table with a coffee and toast on his plate.
“Hey dad.” she said exuberantly.
“Umm, hello Ali. Are you feeling ok?” he said curiously.
“Dad… I know where mom is!” she said seriously.
“I know where she is too.” he said quickly.
“You do?” she stuttered.
Her dad slowly took a step back from the table and shook his head, his eyes filling with tears.
“I had to let her go, even though I was in love.” he said fighting back the tears.
“Why did you have to let her go, they can’t take my mom away from us.” she said upset.
“They had to, it was illegal for her to marry a mortal.” he said sadly.
“But?” she said.
“No buts. Ali, don’t make this harder than it has to be.” he said sadly.
He walked away slowly and sat down in his office. Ali stood in the hallway sadness engulfing her. She had no idea what to do. “Should I stay with my father or go to Camelot and rule?” She walked into her room and wrote a note for her father. It read…
Dear Father,
I feel horrible for what has happened between our families. The king a.k.a. my grandfather told me I have to make a choice either to stay with you or to rule the kingdom. I have no idea what to choose because either way I will end up hurting someone. I never even got to know my mother and I don’t want to leave you alone, with no one forever. I am going back to Camelot and I will come back and tell you my decision. Please don’t hate me.
Love,
Ali

Ali ran from her bedroom and placed the letter on the kitchen counter. She stood in the bathroom and pictured her bedroom in Camelot. Soon enough she was in the exquisite, elegant bedroom in the palace. When she turned around her mother and grandfather were looking at her, her mother crying and her grandfather looking worried. She smiled meekly and started crying with frustration. Ali choked back sobs and couldn’t form the words she needed to say.
“Where have you been Ali?” her grandfather asked.
“I went home to talk to my father and I wrote him a letter, so he knows where I am.” she said after a few minutes to calm down.
“I know we are putting a lot of pressure on you, but you are mature and responsible enough to make the right choice.” her mother said.
“Why can’t we all live together in Camelot, as a family?” she said sadly.
“We can’t it is against the law. If we can do it then everyone will want to. It isn’t safe for your father here because he has no magic ability.” she said reassuringly.
“Can I at least go visit him?” she said meekly.
“I don’t think so, but we will discuss it with your grandfather.” she said anxiously.
They walked briskly down the corridor to her grandfather’s study and took a seat. Her grandfather was looking at the laws of Camelot, slowly reading every word. When he looked up at Ali a smile slowly crept upon his face. Ali and her mother looked at each other suddenly feeling like there was hope in the world after all!
“Ali, there might be a way for your father to come here to live with us.” he said.
“Really?!”
“Yes, but he has to agree with it. It says here that if a mortal wishes to become a citizen of Camelot and develop magical powers they have to first partake in a special ceremony by the king. For him to become part of the royal family as the real king he will have to marry your mother as well. So not too difficult, I can’t believe I didn’t see this before.” he said smiling.
Ali was so excited to hear the wonderful news, but she would have to ask her father if he even wanted to. She grabbed her mother’s hand and they were whisked off in the blink of an eye to their lovely home in New Jersey. When they arrived her father was sitting on the chair in the living room overlooking the busy New Jersey streets. He turned around to see Ali and her mother in the beautiful gowns standing in the kitchen.
“Is it really you?” her father said.
“You haven’t changed at all.” she said with tears in her eyes.
Her father and mother ran to each other’s open arms. Her father passionately kissed her like he had never kissed her before. I mean can you blame him; it’s been like 15 years! After their romantic moment was over they all sat down and told him the news. His face was happy, but was soon turned into a frown.
“I can’t just up and leave my job. What about my family? I don’t know if I can live myself knowing that my family thinks I am dead!” he said angrily.
“But dad, think about it, we can all be together after all of these years.” she said.
“I don’t know.” he thought.
After what seemed like forever her dad finally decided to agree to the ceremony in Camelot. Her mother gave him one last kiss and they held hands and were transported to the magnificent palace. Her father’s jaw dropped in amazement and couldn’t help laughing.
“What I always see this in movies but never could’ve imagined this!” he said.
Her grandfather came strolling in and quickly shook her father’s hand. They walked into the throne room and the king took his seat next to her mother. The ceremony was about to begin. The king had a bowl filled with a red substance… blood! In his other hand was a sharp looking blade and his sword. He explained to her father what he was about to do and her father face turned ashen. He was about to faint then decided to man up. The king slit his arm and the blood pooled into the bowl with the royal blood of Camelot. Her father then took the bowl to his lips and drank the blood. The blood wasn’t bitter but almost sweet and tangy. The king stood up, sword in hand and repeated this phrase.
“I therefore decree Sir Robert Bender to be the new king of Camelot!”
He tapped her father’s shoulder with the head of the sword and stood back with a grand smile. Her father looked green but pushed it aside and stood up hugging her and her mother. The king placed the crown on top of her father’s head. Just then guards came running into the palace screaming and shouting words like “invasion” and “battle”. The king shouted some commands and the guards turned and ran shouting, weapons in hand. Apparently there is a war breaking out in Camelot because of the new king a.k.a. her father. The three of them raced to the balcony and looked below. All you could see were arrows flinging, cannons firing and swords clanging from the distance. Bodies were littering the once beautiful grass and gardens. They stayed put in Ali’s room until the war ended. She hoped it wasn’t long because she was starting to get hungry. The king rushed to the room saying that they were down a knight and he was going to fight. Her mother stood and quickly objected. Her father then stood and offered himself. Her grandfather objected and walked out of the room.
“Father you can’t do that! I don’t want to lose you.” her mother said.
“Darling, my time for ruling is up. I am old and frail, I would rather die fighting for my kingdom than falling down the stairs.” he said stubbornly.
Her grandfather put on his armor and rode his trusty steed out to the battlefield. Her mother watched him go tears in her sparkling eyes, knowing there was nothing she can do. The king lashed his sword and stabbed his opponent in the stomach. He didn’t see the knight behind him and was struck in the head by the head of the sword. He fell from his horse feeling dazed. Her mother screamed and Ali started to cry. He didn’t really know him but he was special to her. They brought him in on a stretcher and put him to bed. Within the hour he was pronounced dead when his heart stopped. They had a grand funeral for the beloved king and the whole town was invited. There were plenty of tears shed but also a lot of memories were shared of what a great king he was. Ali learned that magic isn’t always in books, all you need is a little hope and dreams and wishes do come true.
“Right then and there she saw, a castle faintly drifting in and out of her vision. All you could see was fog across from the moat…”
“Wake up Mrs. Bender we have a lesson going on right now.” her history teacher boomed.
