Blood Moon

I lifted my chin and tilted it toward the vortex of swirling stars. I—the moon spirit—was about to consort with my brilliant lover, the sun. Sure, more stars were waiting for me, whispering their names in my ears. But the sun, the thing the humans worship the most, beckoned me forward. I had an irresistible pull toward him, his passion for keeping the lowly creatures alive, and the drive he had to save them all called to me.

I drifted through the stars, my non-substantial form was able to survive without breathing, and pass by the gaseous flame balls of beauty without being fried to a crisp. I guess you could say I looked like an ordinary human, but I wasn’t. Far from it. My spirit was trapped in the moon to keep it going successfully save one night—a new moon.

I had little care for the humans, why should I help them? They did not worship me, or beg me to save themselves from the tides—which I had complete control over. No, they worshipped my lover, the Sun spirit, or as his name would be—Aztakal. I was jealous indeed, that he had gotten the position I did not. But the entity that created us deemed him fit to fill the position, not I.

I found myself standing face to face with Aztakal finally, after an hour of traveling at a speed humans could not even fathom. He welcomed me into his enticing embrace, and I felt his lips crush down on mine. So little time we were allowed together, but yet every time I felt the blood rush in my ears and the desire lunge through my veins. I quivered and quickly lifted my robe off, I felt quite exposed, but when he looked at me with raw desire plainly written on his face, my fears were assuaged.

My name was Shinial, Daughter of the Goddess, moon spirit. My consort was the sun, Aztakal, and I was content and at peace with my existence. Until one day, the humans created a planet.

The year was 5919, the day I had not a single inkling of an idea of. They had created a serum, one that could make an entirely new planet that they could live on. For humans corrupted their world, it became a bitter place filled with pollution and tears. I gazed sadly upon them through those years, and prayed to my Goddess that they would solve their problems and cleanse their land. I felt truly sorry for the Earth spirit, he was weakened and dying because of what his inhabitants had done to him.

They launched the serum into space, and a new planet formed instantaneously. I pondered how the humans could have kept such a hulking planet inside a small vile. After several years, the humans all made it aboard the new planet, which I had discovered was a female named Rizika. I wanted to make allies with her, I truly did. But then she stole everything from me.

On the day that I was meant to meet Aztakal, I raced forward ahead of normal time—very eager to see my beloved and betrothed. He didn’t know that I was going to be arriving early, for I had not sent a message to him via the stars. But I was glad I didn’t, no matter how much it shattered my heart.

I found Aztakal entwined with Rizika, making love by our very star. With a savage cry I furiously grasped hold of her luminous hair, silver in the twinkling light. She backed away from me and whimpered. She may have been a planet, far beyond my strengths, but she was new to life and did not know her way around things.

“You!” I whirled on my once beloved, and sent a savage kick to his stomach. It amazed me at what an emotion could do. It was truly inspiring to see my fury be taken out on him.

That night I returned to my home, in spirit form, and found a jagged rock. Though nothing could harm me besides other spirits, I willed myself to take a substantial form. It felt strange and very wrong to be solid. To be able to hold things, touch things other than my lovely sun spirit.

Bitterly, I sunk the jagged space rock into my fleshy chest. Pain flared throughout my body and I started to suffocate, while dying from the wound. I returned into my moon form, and saw that my small moon was covered in blood. My moon died that night, as did my spirit form. I resided with the Goddess now, but every once in a blue moon, she will mention that a blood moon has occurred in my old moon. Maybe it was chance that my turned bloody, but I believe it was my last act of defiance, to let the humans and other planets know if you crushed someone’s soul, you would not end up with a pleasant result.

Okay! if you see this post three times, I'm sorry, something's wrong with the website. Anyway, I think this story would be better in third person, But a first person, narrative can work too. It was an intruiging story about love and betrayal. By the way, I'll be posting a story in Teen Ink forums soon, so I need help fixing and editing it. it won't be on Teen Ink since it may be above 3000 words. It's for a contest I'm entering elsewhere, so visit the fo... (more »)
