Too Far

Mr. Porter always felt disgusted with himself after he expelled one of his students, especially ones who were so bright, but this time he felt he really had no other option. This time she had gone too far.

“Mary,” Mr. Porter began. His pupil standing across from him who had been fidgeting with her wand quickly glanced up with wide eyes.

“Yes, Mr. Porter?” she squeaked.

“Do you remember the document you signed when you agreed to attend this school?”

“Y-yes.”

“Can you tell me what it said?”

Mary quickly stuttered out, “It s-said that coming to this school and learning m-magic was a big honor and an even b-bigger responsibility, and if we chose to sign it, we, as students, promised to be r-responsible and to be the best that we c-can.”

“Correct. Now, I have another question for you. How is shrinking the Great Egyptian Pyramids being responsible?”

Mary suddenly seemed very infatuated with the floor and stayed silent. Mr. Porter looked on at his student with sad eyes and said quietly yet firmly, “It’s not, is it.”

Mary, still gazing at the wood floor, shook her head.

“Mary, do you also remember in the contract where it stated that this school has a zero tolerance policy on using magic outside of the school walls?”

Mary’s head snapped up; her brown eyes brimmed with tears. She knew what was coming next.

“I’m sorry, Mary, but I’m going to have to expel you.” The old man outstretched his hand and said, “Please hand me your wand, pack your things, and leave the school.”

Mary thrust the wand at him then bolted out of his office. Mr. Porter sank down in his chair and sighed. It had to be done. This time she had gone too far.
