Where We're Going

I am rummaging through the hall closet, aimlessly feeling around because I can't see anything. Due to the hurricane knocking the power out, we've been sitting in the dark next to vanilla scented candles all day. When our lighters ran out of fluid, I offered to hunt down my old flashlights in the closet upstairs.

I push aside some thermal blankets and finally find the box of flashlights. Just as I grab them and slam the door shut, I feel a pair of hands grasp the sides of my waist.

"Jesus," I breathe, jumping and spinning around. Brett is smiling down at me, his white teeth glowing in the darkness of the hallway. He pulls me closer to his chest and my head turns to a daze.

"Did you find them?" he asks.

I hold up the flashlights, smirking at him. He takes one of them and turns it on, holding it below his chin to light up his flawless face. I giggle as he jokingly crosses his eyes, something he knows can always make me laugh.

We have been together for six months now; introduced by a mutual friend he went to college with. No one expected us to fall for each other; we're polar opposites. He washes dishes at a local restaurant and plays guitar in a band, while I am dreadfully working my way through grad school. But his sweet compliments and interest in the same movies were enough to lure me in. Before I knew it, he became the person I came to with everything and I was falling in love with more than just the tattoos on his arms.

"Come on," he whispers into my ear, sending chills through my body.

I follow him through the dark hallway, holding on to his warm hand. He leads me down the stairs and we acquire our usual spot on my living room couch. We have spent the entire day lying next to each other, discussing anything that came to mind; the existence of ghosts, our most embarrassing moments, what we love most in each other.

My parents don't like Brett and they've made that very clear. They don't believe that he has any potential for a successful future. What they don't understand is that his future is the same as mine; wherever Brett ends up, I will end up too.

"I love you," he murmurs into my ear as he wraps his arms around my stomach.

Brett has given me more than just any love; he has given me unconditional love. It's the type of love where he accepts my annoying habit of grinding my teeth, drives me to the hospital when I have an allergic reaction to a bee sting, and is always willing to childishly climb the tree with me in the backyard. It's the kind of love my parents will never appreciate.

"I love you too," I say.

He tightens his grip around me and laughs. "Hey, who's better? Superman or Batman?"

"Batman," I answer quickly. "Definitely Batman."

He scoffs. "No way."

Before I can rebut, the power comes back on. The lamps light up and the TV loudly comes to life. We glance at each other disappointingly. Brett hoists himself off the couch and rushes to shut off all the lights and TV. The house is completely dark again, so I don't see him coming when I suddenly feel his hand on my cheek.

"Let's keep it like this," he says.

I wrap my arms around his neck. "So…Superman?"

He kisses me deeply, and even though I can't see him in the dark, I know exactly where we're going.
