The First Day Of The Rest Of My Life

Ever since I came out of my mama's womb, instead of screaming, she swears I was singing a show tune while my tiny little toes wiggled to the beat. I was a happy child, she always explained. Filled with joy, filled with life. My hair was the color of sunshine, sashaying down my tiny shoulders in tight little ringlets. That was her most favorite thing about me she said. Not only that, but my way of putting a smile on the most depressed persons face sure did fill her big heart with joy. My grandmother- Grandma Maddie she was called, is the one who gave me my beautiful hair and the little blond freckles running across my nose. My eyes? Well, let's just say my father gave me those brown beauties. But, you are letting me get ahead of myself, my dear! Forget I ever told you how I look, and let me let your mind wander. There are many beautiful people in this world, heck, I believe everyone has a certain wonderfulness inside them that absolutely no one can replace. Every one is their own person, their own soul! If you can't love yourself, how can you love others? No matter what happens, what fights you have, what kind of people come into your bittersweet life, you will always (and I mean ALWAYS) have your soul to guide you and your heart to keep you alive. That's why, I love life. Absolutely love it. Now Imagine- (this may boggle your mind) think...what if there was no life. None at all. What would there be? Nothing. Nothingness...it makes no sense. Life is everything we HAVE! We need to hold on to it with all our might. Life is to short to be anything but happy. Now say your name over and over and over and over again in your head until it just sounds like gibberish. Think..who are you? What makes you..you?

Today is the day. THE DAY. I have been waiting for this moment my whole life. When I woke up, sunshine sprayed through the room from open windows. It was nice to wake up without an alarm clock beeping straight into my ear. Because today is Saturday. It's June 21st. Have I told you that today's the day? Hmmmm....I don't think I have. TODAY IS THE DAY. The audition. You might not think it's that big of a deal, but this means the world to me. See, I live in New York City, and a huge broadway play is happening soon. The producers need a girl, a bright, happy girl to play the main role. That's me! I have to sing, dance, in front of thousands of people! Up on that stage is heaven to me.

The buildings of New York tower over me and even they seem to be standing taller and prouder today. Then I stop in front of a big, beautiful skyscraper. I pull open the door. The hallway before me seems to stretch on forever and ever. The carpet is red. I feel like a movie star. Once I seem to be walking for like five minutes, I come across a door. There was a paper on it that said in big cursive letters "AUDITIONS TODAY!". I open the door and see a huge black stage with dim lights. "Um excuse me?" My words come out in a soft whisper. The stage is deserted. Then I hear a booming voice. "IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO AUDITION, YOU MUST LINE UP BEHIND THE STAGE." I walk across the platform, and open the big heavy black curtain that was covering the back of the stage. Rows and rows of people were there and I swear my jaw dropped in awe. I waited and waited for hours and each person that went seemed to be amazing. Then, my name was called "Colby Lions, to the stage please!". My heart was beating faster than the speed of light. My legs seemed to be moving in slow motion. I pushed the big black curtain out of my way and began to walk towards the middle of the stage. "BEGIN." A lady with a tight bun on top of her head and glasses said. I began to belt out the first note.
Today is the first day of the rest of my life.
