Rest in Peace, Larry

"My name is Denise. I am 15 years old. So... yeah, that's it." The new kid to school was being indifferent towards the others. She never blended in and sat at the corner of the classroom all day. She did not feel lonely or gloomy. In fact, having a glimpse of her face, the arrogance and loftiness were unfolded under that delicate skin. Lucy, who always tended towards bullying went up to Denise, reached out her hands and smiled cunningly. Words came out courteously, "Wanna rule the class with me?" Other classmates were staring, whose bodies shivering with eeriness. The voice echoed across the room, not a single response from Denise. From a distance, there was a burst of indistinct laughter. It came from Edward who was always being punched by Lucy's gang. Lucy immediately grabbed his shirt and pushed him against the concrete wall, swore at him with filthy words, then pushed him aside. She focused back on Denise as if nothing happened,"Well then? I am not going to be the sweet talker anymore. You think you are the queen? Now, you are just pathetic. But I do see your potential, I now give you a chance to become one of us. Take it or leave it." Denise clenched her teeth and pretended she could not hear nothing. She was only concentrated on the metal thing she gripped on. Within a second, Lucy took it out of her hands and threw it onto the ground. Its surface was scratched.

At last, Denise could not stand any of this and stood up for herself. Her hands held tightly onto Lucy's neck unsparingly, trying to suffocate her to death. A deep serious voice emitted, "Go to h*ll! Go to h*ll, you devil." Lucy had trouble breathing,"H... Help... Let... Let...G..." Lucy's friends pulled Denise eagerly but it was not working. Her eyes were filled with hatred, which were surprisingly from a 15 year-old girl. What had she gone through that made her so mad?

The teacher came immediately and took her away from Lucy. Fortunately, Lucy was still alive but there were red imprints on her neck and bits of wounds. Denise, was of course brought to the Principal's office.

"Do you know what kind of consequences you have to face after this?" The Principal, Miss Miller asked suspiciously. "The worst would have to be death." Denise looked into her eyes with confidence. Miss Miller was shocked by this answer and thought she was out of her mind. She continued speaking, "Right, then you will no longer stay in this school." Denise never felt sorry for Lucy or regret for her actions. She then left the office, packed her school bag up and headed towards a vacant place.

She ran into the woods and stopped by a river. She stood in front of a tree trunk with carved words, "Rest in peace, Larry." Her tears shed passed the rim. After all, she was not that inhumane.

It all happened after the death of Larry who was her beloved one. Her parents seldom cared about her. Her dad always gambled in Casinos and her mom always traveled to other places and left her alone. All Denise had left was Larry, the only family member she had. Larry could not respond to her problems, but he was a very good listener. Whenever she was depressed, her hands would eventually lie on his fluffy fur and he would smile back. She loved to tickle his tummy and he would roll on the floor back and forth. Then, they would lie against each other and gaze at that breath-taking view of sunset. Those little faces shimmered upon the yellow light.

Until one day, a hunter came by. He wanted to shoot the rabbit hiding behind the tree. Larry bit his long gun and never let go, as brave as he always was. "Hey! Get him out of my way!" The hunter exclaimed furiously. Denise ran towards him and tried to stop Larry. Larry let go quickly but he was still growling and bit the hunter's leg with his sharp teeth.

Suddenly, the hunter took out his knife from the pocket and stabbed Larry twice on the neck. Blood poured simultaneously out of his neck. He saw the rabbit escaped and his vision started to blur. Peacefully, his eye lids closed gradually. Denise wrapped him with her arms and mumbled, "I will never let you go." She could not accept Larry being out of her life. "Cling!" The metal plate of the collar fell onto the autumn leaves. On it it wrote "Larry" , she named him "Larry" when she first found him homeless on the street and took him home. She kept the metal piece in her wallet and sobbed through the chilly night.

From then on, her life went upside down as things were different without Larry. Especially when her father said, "Chill out, it's just a dog.", she would go mental and break things in the house. For most of the time, she would head into the forest where she and Larry always went to. Now, it was only her and "Rest in Peace, Larry" carved onto the tree.

Then came the sunset, without Larry to be with, the sunset did not seem to be as beautiful as always. Suddenly, there was a shooting star in the sky. She chased it with all her strength, so fast that she nearly tripped. "Larry! Larry!" She felt there was hope.

Finally, she cried with joy. Right in front of her was not Larry. It was a family of rabbits. She knew, that instant, that was the rabbit which Larry saved. "Larry, you did a very good thing." Denise threw the metal piece onto the ground and left. There was no more hatred. She smiled like a young joyful girl as if she never did before. Although the sun had set, the moon smiled with her too.
