We Know the Truth

On the day of the shooting some people say Reyna White died. Others, who didn't know her before the shooting, argue with them saying she is still alive. I agree with the first statement.

Reyna White was a personality before she was shot. She loved playing pranks and could make anyone smile, she was creative, outgoing and hyper. People thought she was annoying, but we knew she just couldn't stay still. Reyna could never stay still, we used to tease her about it and sometimes called her the Energizer Bunny.

On the day of the shooting, Reyna was walking with Annie, her best friend, after school. When Reyna left Annie on her block, to go to the bus stop she was smiling and laughing. A few minutes later, Annie heard gunshots and ran out of her house and down the street with her older sister to see what was happening. By the time Annie and Maya got to the end of the street Reyna was laying on the ground with a bullet in her side, another in her shoulder and the last one above her elbow. Cars stopped in the middle of the street to watch, but no one got out to help Reyna. Annie said it that they looked like they were only interested in what was happening, not whether or not Reyna lived. While Maya called the police, Annie held her jacket against Reyna's side and called me.

“Tyler,” Annie said when I picked up the phone, “Reyna's been shot on the corner.” The phone fell from my hands and I ran over to the window. When I looked out the window I saw Reyna on the sidewalk holding Annie's hand, her face was pale and there was blood on the sidewalk under her. I ran down the stairs and out the door.

The police and ambulance pulled up to the curb a few minutes after I got to Reyna. As soon as they arrived they put Reyna into the back of the ambulance and Annie and I went with her. At the hospital, they gave her a blood transfusion and pulled the bullets out of her side, shoulder and arm. The last time I saw her smile was when they finished pulling the bullets out, as soon as they were all out and the nurses washed them off Reyna held them up grinned and shoved them into her pocket. Nobody was surprised.

Almost seven months later, Reyna came back to school and her bullet wounds were almost healed. After she came back to school, Annie was transferred to our class and the two of us sat next to her in every class. People tried to get her to smile, joke, laugh or even speak, but she never did.

One day a girl in our class, named Bella, yelled at her because she wouldn't talk to her. Bella called her a few bad words and said she was only being quiet for attention. Everyone in the class held their breaths waiting for the outburst they were sure would come. It didn't. Reyna just turned around, punched Bella in the face and walked away.

It's been five months, sixteen days, eleven hours and twenty-two minutes since Reyna was shot, and she hasn't spoken since she was shot.

Some people say Reyna White was shot three times and died. But those of us who really know Reyna say she died on the day of the shooting. Many people argue, they say we are being stupid and stubborn. They say that we are eventually going to lose the argument, but we keep arguing because we know her, we know better.

We know the truth.
