The last sunset

The pale, frail body that now lay on the bed was just a few months ago full of life. How can things change so quickly? She thought to her self. Just yesterday she was cooking and baking with her mom, and Boom things had happened in a blur leaving her in a nightmare.

Jessica glanced down at her mom’s pale face and stroked it lightly, tears once again welling up in her eyes. Oh how she would give up anything just to hear her mom’s voice, to hear her laugh, to hear her scold. Even hearing her cry would be better than the silence that now hung in the air so heavily, the silence that seemed to suffocate her. She closed her eyes and let all the good memories soothe her into a daydream. Memories that seem to bring nothing but pain, she thought bitterly.

She opened her eyes and looked at the room she was sitting in, a room she had come to hate so much and yet held the one person she loved so much. She got up and got a drink that was sitting a top the counter. She choked down the water; Jessica now didn’t seem to find comfort or pleasure in anything, she ate to survive and drank to keep from getting dehydrated. What pleasure is left in this empty world for me? She questioned herself.
Her pleasure was felt only with her mom, her life was lived only with her mom, and her love was dedicated all to her mom. All this would die with her mom if she ceased to survive the cancer that was so rapidly consuming her frail body.

She sat back down next to her mother and watched as the sun started to set. She heard a noise and felt something stir next to her. It can’t be!! Her Mom had opened her eyes!! How long has it been, a year? She didn’t care she quickly embraced her mom, and started asking her how she was. Her mom didn’t reply but instead clutched her hand and stared beyond her. Jessica turned around and stared with awe at the sun that was now descending into the horizon. Such beauty that left her breathless, she glanced back at her mom and kissed her lightly on the cheek.

She held her mom’s frail hands close to her heart and watched the sunset, no words needed to be said everything was perfect again. She would once again be able to love her mom, feel pleasure with her mom and live once again with her mom. Her smile widened and widened until it hurt. And then tears started to fall, tears of joy and happiness.

Then, the most unexpected thing happened! Her mom leaned towards her and whispered

“I love you Jessica and I always will. Take care and remember that I may not always be with you but seek me in your heart and you shall find me. We will meet again, but until then, my love farewell.” Her mom then swiftly leaned back and rested on her bed.

She then turned to look out the window just as the sun slipped beyond the horizon. She quickly turned to look at her mom and immediately she knew that she had passed away. Amazingly she didn’t cry, she felt a strong sense of relief. She kissed her mom and whispered

“I love you mom, and thank you. Thank you for sharing your last sunset with me”
