She laid in the endless meadow of white flowers. Basking in the warm afternoon sun. She wore a yellow sundress and no shoes. Her hair was blonde and tangled, but she didn’t care. Her blue eyes were closed and behind them her mind thought nothing. She wanted nothing more than to stay here forever. But you always have to wake up.
She woke up under warm covers, surrounded by blackness. She poked her head out into the cold air, shivering as she did. There’s a saying that says, “When you are in love, you don’t want to go to sleep because reality is finally better than your dreams.” Well it turns out that this is only true when the person you’re in love with loves you too. She hated waking up in the morning, she was always torn away from perfect dreams of him. At least this time she awoke before he entered her dream.
She climbed out of the covers, Goosebumps rising all over her body. Maybe today would be The Day. But she said that every morning and it never was. Maybe there was no hope. No chance that she would live happily ever after with the man she was in love with. But even though the thought tugged at her mind she had no choice but to push it aside and believe that today could be The Day.
Through a tired haze, she dressed and brushed her hair, which was prettier in her dreams. She got on the bus and went to school, just like she always did. And just as always, when he boarded the bus, she moved over so he could sit with her, and just like always, he didn’t. she stared out the window until they got to school. She rushed out the door as fast as she could, on the brink of tears. He used to be her best friend. Now she would be surprised if he even remembered her name.
She skipped first period because she was crying in the bathroom. She skipped second because she was paralyzed with hurt. She finally got up the nerve to make her way to third. Only to be stared at as she ran out crying. She sat for the rest of the day, staring at the wall in the guidance office while the councilor tried to get her to tell her what was wrong. She didn’t want to say. The woman would only laugh at her and say it was just a crush. She wouldn’t understand the pain. So she just sat there quietly until the bell rang. Then she walked out the building carrying her bag. But today she did something different. She didn’t bored the bus, like she always did. She walked down the road and wondered around for a while.
She entered a little store on the corner of 5th and Main. All she bought was a pack of gum. But as she walked out the door, watching just her feet, she bumped into a guy who was very hard to miss. He was tall and handsome, but she barely noticed him. As she walked away, he came up behind. “Hi, my name’s Noah, you have pretty eyes.” She stared at him in disbelief and he took her hand in his. “Would you like to get some ice cream? I know it might sound strange, seeing how we’ve never met before and it’s the middle of December, but you can’t do the same thing everyday and expect anything more than more of the same. So, how about we try something knew, and go get some ice cream with a stranger in the middle of December.”
“I’m Becky and I’d love to. Vanilla is my favorite kind. You’ve just told me what I was missing all this time. Today will never be The Day if I do nothing but what I did yesterday.” Was all she said. He nodded and he understood, he had felt the same way.
They sat there eating ice cream in a diner on a cold December day. They knew nothing more than each other. And that’s all I’m going to say.
