The Island

EXPOSITION

Lights. I see lights. Is this what heaven looks like? If it is, I’m a bit disappointed. Hey…what’s poking me? “Hey, you. Wake up already.” Huh?

Slowly, ever so slowly, Abby blinked a few times and looked straight up into a pair of intense army-green eyes, decorated with brown flecks and framed by long girly eyelashes. The eyelashes took away the intense effect of the eyes. They belonged to a boy crouched next to her. Blinking some more, she reached up and tried to block out the sun. He looked a bit older than her. 15? 16? Maybe 17? He had long, floppy, dark blonde hair and very tan skin. Dang, he’s hottt.

All of a sudden, she was conscious of herself and her own appearance. She could only guess what she looked like right about now: her skin would be dry and chapped, her curly red hair a wild matted mess. Her clothes…well, she was never one to care much about fashion, but she knew they were not in their best shape right now.

“Hey. My name’s Chad,” the boy said, flipping his hair. Without waiting for a reply, Chad turned and plopped a huge hairy-looking thing next to her. “Have a coconut.”

Abby pulled herself up to a sitting position and awkwardly took the coconut. “I’m Abby. How do you drink out of this thing?”

“I already made a hole right there,” he said, pointing to the top of the fruit. “Just drink out of it like you’re drinking from a can of soda.”

“Oh. Thank you,” she said, and took a huge gulp. Juice ran down her throat and almost choked her, but she hardly cared. She was soo thirsty. Why was she so thirsty?
Slowly, the events of last night came back to her. Being alone on the deck of a ship, falling off and landing in the sea, crying out for help and not getting a reply. Swimming for ever and ever, losing hope, and then getting cursed cramps that slowed her down with pain. And then what happened? Abby surveyed her surroundings. She was on an island, and around her she could see nothing but natural beauty. Behind her, a massive jungle loomed with mystery. In front of her, turquoise waves crashed onto white sand.

Wow…
“Where are we?” Abby asked. “How did I get here?”

“Well, we’re on an island, obviously. Though exactly what island this is and where it would be found on a map, I have no idea. Anyway, I saw you out there in the sea, so well…I swam out, grabbed you, and swam back.”

Abby looked up at him in awe. “Well, thank you very much,” she said sincerely with a smile. “I guess you saved me from drowning,” she added more solemnly. Then her hormones took over and she gushed in her mind about how romantic that was…she’d been rescued by a super cute boy!! That stuff happened all the time in movies. But this wasn’t a movie, and it was happening to an ordinary girl like her!

“So tell me how you fell in the sea in the first place,” Chad said, interrupting her thoughts.

“I was on vacation with my mom,” Abby began. “We were on a mini cruise ship. But a few days after we boarded, my mom got sick and had to stay in our cabin for most of the week. Well, one night there was a party on deck. My mom urged me to attend and enjoy myself, but I didn’t have much fun. Then, when everyone left, I stayed. Because…well, I just wanted to have some alone time. And it was such a beautiful night.
Like, all warm and quiet and peaceful…” Here she paused and shyly glanced at Chad from the corner of her eye. She didn’t want him to think she was some nature-freak who spent too much time alone.

“Go on,” he said, gazing at her.

So Abby went on. “Well, there isn’t much to say after that. I was perched on the railing and looking into the water. And then…I can’t remember exactly how, but I fell off. Right into the water.”

“Wow,” Chad said.

“What about you?” Abby inquired. “How did you get here?”

Chad grabbed a big clump of sand and threw it. “Well, I got here a few days ago. Uh…I fell off a boat.”

Abby waited for him to say more, but he stayed silent.

“Well, I guess we’re both really lucky to be alive,” Abby finally said with a smile. “So what have you been doing around here? How did you survive all these weeks?”

Chad flashed a coy grin. “Follow me,” he said, getting up. Abby stood up, too, and noticed that he was a whole head taller than her. For some reason, that made her happy.

Chad led her on a tour all around the island. It was actually quite small. He showed her where he slept, where and how he got his food, and where he got fresh water. “It’s all good,” he said with a smile. “If you search hard enough, you can find everything you need here. But the saddest thing is that there’s no one here. I haven’t seen a single human being this whole time.”

“Wow,” Abby said. “We’re the only two here, then.”

“Yep,” Chad nodded. “But two is better than one,” he finished with a grin.

Abby smiled at him. “So what should we do now? Haven’t you ever tried to get off?”

“I have. But our only hope right now is that someone will find us. So I’ve been building a fire each evening. You know – to attract attention.”

“Oh. I wonder why no one’s spotted the smoke yet…it’s like no one knows about this island, which explains why there’s no one here.”

“That’s what I think, too,” Chad replied with a grim expression.
RISING ACTION

Abby was about to ask Chad another question when they both heard a low growl from behind them. She froze. “What was that?” she whispered.

“I don’t know. But don’t worry, it’s probably nothing. This whole time I’ve been on the island, I’ve only seen birds and fish and an occasional snake and…” Chad’s voice trailed away and he wore an expression of shock and horror.

About 20 feet away from the two teenagers stood a snarling, fierce-looking purple bear.

“How did a bear get here?! With purple fur, too?!” Chad whispered. “Okay, make no sudden movements…”

All of a sudden, the bear charged at them! Abby screamed and sprinted as fast as she could, too panicked to think straight. The beast followed right after her.

“WHAT ARE YOU DOING?? YOU CAN’T OUTRUN A BEAR!!” Chad cried. He thought fast. “Climb a tree!” he yelled after her.

Abby tried to calm down despite this desperate situation she was in. A tree! Right! Immediately, she tried to climb the nearest tree.

Shoot! She’d failed. The tree she’d chosen was hard to climb. Her legs hung dangerously low, low enough for the bear to reach and pull her down.

Before she could figure out what to do next, Abby was tackled from behind and pinned to the floor. “OOF!” Her hands and face scraped against the jungle floor. She looked up, but a hand pushed her head back down. “Don’t talk; don’t move” she heard whispered in her ear. It was Chad, lying right on top of her and shielding her from the bear with his own body. She fought back tears. This was the second time he’d risked his own life to save hers.

Abby felt the bear coming closer. Something tickled her left cheek. She held her breath. She realized what Chad was doing now. Abby recalled a story about a traveler who’d been attacked by a bear and only survived by playing dead. However, he’d had a backpack to protect him from the bear’s sharp claws when it swiped him.

Oh, there it was again. This time, she felt a painful slash across her right arm. Abby bit her tongue. Don’t move, she reminded herself.

All of a sudden, Chad’s grip on her tightened, and she heard a stifled grunt from him. The bear was probably swiping at him now, carelessly ripping its claws back and forth on his back. But Abby couldn’t do anything. Any sudden movement would probably kill them both. She could only lie still and pray.
CLIMAX
All of a sudden, Chad slowly rolled off of Abby’s back. “The bear’s gone,” he whispered, lying on the ground. “I don’t know how, but he just vanished.”

RESOLUTION
Chad and Abby find out that the island they’re on and the bear they encountered were both results of a mad scientist’s experiments gone wrong. A crazy scientist somewhere was trying to recreate life by making his own island and adding his own animals. This scientist worked from an invisible laboratory located somewhere on the island that Abby and Chad never bumped into, and was able to watch them the whole time. He inserted the bear from nowhere to see how it would act. But while the bear was on the island, the scientist had to excuse himself for a minute or two to use the facilities. It wasn’t until he came back 10 minutes later that he saw his bear attacking Abby and Chad, and finally removed it with a flash of pixie dust.
By the way, Abby and Chad finally meet this mad scientist a few days later, and soon persuade the scientist to ditch his crazy experiments and help them get home. By the time they finally get home, and are reunited with their families, Abby and Chad have fallen in love. Yada yada yada, and they get married a few years later. =)
