Colors of Heaven

Cold fear, like ice slipping down my back. That’s all I can feel, nothing else. Everything is bright and white and cold. A swirling mist wraps around me, and grabs ahold of my ankles, dragging me down further and further down, until the whiteness turns to cruel blackness. Suddenly water rushed over me, and my breathing became short and hurried. My eyes burst open, as I gasped for air.

“Lonnie?”

I turn my head to look at a girl who sits next to me. She is short and has white hair. Jumping up, she’s instantly at my bedside.

“Oh my gosh, Lonnie! You’re awake!” she says, her voice desperate, and her black eyes wide.

“Where the hell am I?” I ask, the room is white, and the bedclothes are white. Why was every damn thing white?

She looks at me, a curious expression on her face. “You’re in the hospital, Lonnie. Don’t you remember? You had an accident. You and Blake were jumping Black Rocks and you hit your neck on the cliff side. Blake jumped in right after you and dragged you out, but the shock put you in an instant coma. You don’t remember do you?”

I try to think, really hard, my head hurts. “No, I don’t.”

A tear slips down her face. “The doctors said this would happen.”

I shudder. “What would happen? What the hell is going on?!” I was frantic. What was happening to me! I tried to think, remember some image. Black Rocks, Blake. Nothing was coming to mind.

“Well, Ms. Winters, you’re awake.” A doctor in a white coat comes into the room, a clipboard in tow. He has a creepy smile.

Placing the clipboard down on a little table, he looks up at a little plastic bag, filled with liquid. “Looks good still, let’s see how the IV looks.” He rolls up his sleeves, and reaches for my hand.

Skittishly, I rip it away. “Don’t touch me!” I scream.

“Careful!” he yells, reaching over and grabbing my hand. “If you pull that IV out, you won’t get the medicine you need and your body will go into shut down mode.”

He gently touches the place where the port embedded itself in my hand, and I wince.

“Damnit,” I say under my breath.

“Is that tender?” he asks.

“Like hell it is. What happened to me?” I demand.

The doctor sits down on a little wheeled stool, and folds his hands. “You were in a shock induced coma for a week. In that week you suffered memory loss. At this point I can’t tell how much memory you’ve lost, or for how long you will be without a memory. It could be a week, or it could be the rest of your life. I should know by tomorrow the extent of your memory loss. The best thing you can do right now is just rest.”

I shiver. Why can’t I remember anything? The world is like an empty, black hole and I am reaching for anything to grab ahold of. I look over at the girl that sits next to me.

“Who are you?” I ask.

She is crying. “I’m your sister, Lonnie. My name is Jenna; you’re older than me by two years. I’m seventeen.”

I feel bad that I am hurting her, but there isn’t anything I can do about it.

“I’ll leave you girls to talk alone, maybe if you keep talking to her Jenna, it will jog some memory. Remember, Lonnie, don’t jerk your hand.” He gets up and grabs his clipboard, and I nod.

After he leaves, I turn to Jenna. “Will you stay here tonight? I don’t really want to be alone.”

She wipes her face. “Of course, Lonnie. The flowers on your gown match your blue eyes.” She smiles.

I look down. “They aren’t blue, they’re like gray.”

She looks closer. “Ummm, no those are definitely blue. Are your eyes okay? Maybe I should call the doctor back in?”

I shake my head. “No that’s fine.”

Looking around the room, I tried to pick out colors, but all I saw was black, white and gray. Something was wrong.

I tried to ignore it. “So, Blake, who is he?” I asked.

“Your fiancé, Lonnie, Blake is your fiancé.”

Aww, s***, I think.

“How long have we been, ya know, engaged?” Nervously, I fiddle with the IV in my hand.

“About a year, the wedding is set for next May,” she says sadly.

“And what…?” I start.

“Its August,” she answers, knowing already what my question was.
“Right.”
Silence enters the room, and she drifts off to sleep. I look around the colorless room, and my eyelids begin to droop.
I’m falling, the water is black and it roils. I’m screaming, falling, reaching for anything. Something rips my hand, and I scream again.
Waking up, I’m breathing heavily. Jenna is screaming, a nurse is holding her back. The doctor in the white coat is at my side, a tube in his hand. I look down at my hand and see that its bleeding and the bedclothes around me are wet.
“She’s losing blood pressure, and her heart rate is falling!” I hear someone yell, but everything is a blur of blacks and whites. I can still hear someone screaming.
Then everything goes black and the night comes over me.
Suddenly, colors erupt in my eyes, and I’m blinded.
I’m home.
