Are you looking for a good summer book to read?  I've got a great recommendation: Gathering blue by Lois Lowery.  This tale of survival features a teenage orphan who overcomes many challenges to thrive in a community that usually leaves the weak to die.  As we are introduced into the story, Kira's father has passed away anther mother is gravely ill.  When her mother dies, Kira is orphaned and the family property comes under dispute.  Kira was born with a deformed leg and had only been allowed to live because her mother had defended her; now that her mother is unable to do that, Kira is vulnerable to the desires of the rest of the community.  After being accused of being "dead weight", she is brought before the council edifice and exhibits much skill in the art of embroidery.  She is allowed to live and work in the community rather than being shunned and likely, devoured by beasts.</div>

Just like The Giver, the predecessor to this book, the story is perfect for teenagers to read.  The brave heroine and main character is a teenager.  Details of the book are not appropriate for younger children.  Throughout the book, the author weaves a positive story in which a person viewed as weak demonstrates strength; a person regarded as a burden is actually a gift; and a person thought to have little, has much.  Tag story is intriguing.  Kira and her parents fought hard on several occasions to remain part of this community.  As Kira learns more about life in this place, she becomes aware of how troubling aspects of it really are: the most cherished and talented people are actually prisoners.</div>

This book has well written.  Characters and a complex community setting.  The characters are easy to relate and care about.  The story moves well and is quick to read.  I especially like it when a teenager is the focus and we learn good values and lessons through her actions.  Again, if you are looking for a good book to read, please consider this one as it will leave you mesmerized and waiting for the sequel.  I enjoyed it an so will you!</div>
