Belong to the Sea

All my life I have wished to travel the world by sea, it is my only wish in life. Alas it can’t be done if only I were an orphan, if I were an orphan I could walk around by myself people would think I was lowly scum, but they would leave me alone to do as I wish. Sadly I was not blessed with this privilege. Stuck here in this castle the only company being my family and the workers, and even worse a peace with a kingdom made and I am too be the peace offering! One week from today at my sixteenth coronation and announcement to my beloved seaside kingdom will be made. Princess Salina off to be a bride, bought and sold for your peace! Not in those exact words but they might as well be. I don’t even remember the name of the kingdom, none the less the person, of whom I’m being sent too! The scandal, even more of a scandal—my escape, tomorrow morning rumors will be flying but not of the marriage. “Have you heard? Princess Salina has gone missing! Been kidnapped as they say, such a sweet thing she was hope she’s alright.” Of course I’ll be fine, but only if I make it onto a ship and don’t get discovered till we are out on open waters too far to turn around. I’ll prove that I, as a woman not a princess, am just as good as any man. About the marriage one of my three sisters can have him goodness knows they are all jealous.

Deep into the night I knew my parents were resting. Easy to sneak out now, especially with this big window on my side wall, all I’d have to do was tie a rope to my bed and climb down. Have to finish packing first, plus I have to time it right to avoid the guards. I had a good sized leather bag I stuffed it full of clothes, some working clothes I got from the laundry room and very few fancy dresses. I put too pairs of shoes in the bag, dress flats and leather boots, I changed into the other pair of leather boots I owned. I also changed into one of my pairs of worker clothes. I brought a brush and a few changes of undergarments. I stalked as many jewelry items as I could on myself without looking too odd and as an easy prey for a few sticky fingers. The rest I shoved into my bag. I also had on my music locket, as I always wear. The tune always calms me and brings back a wonderful memory.

I was five years old; my father took me out for his six month journey with my mother. There was a storm, I fell overboard. A boy two or three years older saved me and brought me to his ship. It was a pirate ship but I wasn't scared. I spent the night there and that night I was out on the deck. The boy who saved me was fiddling with this locket he opened it and it started playing music I was suddenly memorized. But I recognized the song and started to hum along. He then noticed I was there and asked me if I knew this song I answered yes, “It is called I Belong to the sea.” The boy then said that it made sense and asked if I wanted to have it, it meant nothing to him but since I know the song it might mean more to me. I said yes and he gave it to me then he asked “Would you please sing it for me once though?” I just simply nodded and opened the locket and started singing,
"I was born on the land but belong to the sea the sky and sun mean nothing to me.
I am friends to the moon fore it is the mother of the waves, I belong to the sea.
The sun can make me smile the sky makes me sigh but the sea makes me laugh, sigh, cry, and fly. Without the sea I wouldn’t be me without the sea I would be alone for the sea is my one and only home! I was born on the land but belong to the sea, I belong to the sea." He just simply said that it was beautiful. Then I fell asleep and when I awoke I was with my parents but I still had the locket with me so I knew it was not a dream.

Half of it I believe I made up, but I still have the locket with me so I don’t know what to believe. I take a dagger off my wall and shove it in my boot I also take sword and loop it through my belt. Engulfing myself with a black cloak I finish the pack. Stuff in a ribbon or two and grab a pouch, not small but not large either, filled with coins and rubies. Lastly I pack my maps, world, city, and sea maps. I also take a small parcel of food, and a canister of water. Caring it all is heavy but it’s a light load to run away on. I look out my window and throw down the secured rope I also toss down my heavy luggage only carrying my food and money as I shimmy down the rope. When I clambered onto the rope I heard a thud as my luggage landed on the ground, and I prayed nobody heard.

Once on the ground I made my way to the horse stall carrying my luggage. My horse, Tilley, was already saddled I just had to tie up my luggage. Climbing on the left of Tilley I seated myself and kicked her sides to start her off in a trot. I could scarcely see ahead but that did not matter, I knew the terrain by heart. Around me everything was a black bur. We headed toward the docks, once there I left Tilley next to the house of an old friend. Walking on I examined the boats I had to choose from. Only one sang to me like the ocean did, I followed my gut and went to the boat at the end. I could barely see in this clouded night but I could still tell it was a fairly large ship, not the biggest here, but still fairly large.

The only thing tying the dock to the boat was ten or so ropes none of which were good to climb on. Off a few feet floating in the water was a sturdy rope, I knew what I had to do and I sighed. I figured if I really wanted to get on this ship and I really wanted to leave I’d do it, and I did. I jumped into the cold night’s ocean and swam that few feet, with all my things weighing me down, to the rope which was not easy at all. Then with my wet self I had to struggle to climb the rope up the ship, I slipped several times. I thought I might die the weight of everything was just too much. I was half way up the ship when I saw a long narrow piece of wood extending from the ship to the dock. I cried out in anger.
“You have got to be joking!” It echoed louder and longer than I thought it would. I hung on for dear life blending into the darkness of the ship with my cloak hoping no one would see or hear me. I limbered on up.

Finally after at least an hour, four times longer than it should have been, of climbing the ship I reached the top. I jump over the railing and made a large THUMP! When you wish to be quiet why is everything so loud?! I still walked on though, off in the distance I heard the talking of a few voices. I ran to the nearest dark hole I could find. I ran to a door, inside it was small all it had in it was a broken mop and a rusty bucket, also a few dull cutlasses. I slowly closed the door in the cramped space. The people I heard earlier were walking by now.
“I swear Pierce what are we ta’ do with ye? Ye be always gettin’ us kicked out o’ the tavern!” All the crusty voice got in return was a loud hiccup. They walked closer to the little closet I was in and as they did my stomach growled with an endless fury.
“Hic…what be hic…that?” A drunken man spurred out, I was barely able to comprehend his words.
“Tw’s nothing ye old coot.” The two men passed on. Only a small sigh of relief escaped my lips, to make sure my stomach did not growl again I grabbed some bread I packed and ate. I also gulped some water, slowly I grew tired before I fell asleep I prayed to the heavens it all would work out. Finally I lost the war with my eyelids and let everything fade to a comforting black.
