Laundry Day portrays a moment in my memories of (reluctantly) helping my grandmother with laundry as a child. Clothes hang from the clotheslines on a hot summer day; the sun is our dryer and the breeze is our air conditioner. With this piece, I illustrate both a poignant slice of my experience in China and the frugal lifestyle of people who belong to my Chinese culture. A result of a long history of economic insecurity and Confucian values, Chinese households try to save energy and money as much as they can. Thus, a variety of simple sustainable practices are common in daily life, which Laundry Day portrays. This way of economic living I grew up with, and still live with, has profoundly shaped my beliefs about interactions between human and nature I hold today.
