For most Teen Ink readers, June means the end of the school year and the beginning of the summer vacation we've anticipated for so long. But once school lets out and you're back home with your parents, you might find yourself searching for a way to fill the long, hot days.
If you do get bored this June, chances are some of your friends are feeling the same way. You can always get together and have an end-of-the-year homework-burning party, but if you want to get more creative than that, June is full of wacky holidays just begging to be celebrated. Don't believe me? Check these out, courtesy of Oracle Thinkquest.
National Chocolate Ice Cream Day is June 7th, and just a few days before that is National Rocky Road Day on June 2nd. A few weeks later on June 20th, it's National Ice Cream Soda Day! If those aren't good enough reasons to throw a party, I really don't know what are.
For our vegan or lactose-intolerant readers, though, maybe an ice cream party doesn't sound quite so delicious as it does to me. But June is National Papaya Month, too, and June 26th is Chocolate Pudding Day. (What is it with June and chocolate? I'm not sure, but I'm certainly not complaining, either.)
If you want to celebrate something other than food, there are still plenty of great options for you. Imagine themed parties for Dare Day on June 1st, Festival of Popular Delusions Day on June 5th, Yo-Yo Day on June 10th, or Pink Day on June 23rd. Sure, Independence Day is coming up in July, but you can start the festivities early with your very own obscure holiday celebration.
Perhaps the best June holiday of all, though, is National Hug Holiday on June 11th. Find a friend, family member, or neighbor who might need a hug, and offer one. It's one of the simplest ways to celebrate the people you love. And the greatest thing about a hug? You get back as much as you give.
Now get partying!
